Talking with some friends, we were discussing the apparent lack of interesting and challenging challenges in this fandom. Table prompts and single word prompts seem most prevalent and I was wondering if I was alone in not being inspired by them?

A community that offers more complex and thought-provoking challenges? By this I mean book quote challenges, specific pairings, specific scenarios and the like. The sort that kick your imagination into high gear and you might find yourself writing a fic that you'd otherwise never have thought of.

Example. "Sex is a momentary itch; love never lets you go."

I've noticed in this community that there are writers who enjoy writing stories for others who ask and that there are readers who would like to read specific pairings and scenarios and that is why I am posting this here. A community where challenges could be issued and answered and the only criteria was that the challenge had to be stimulating would also cater to this.

instead of complaining why don't you take the initiative and do it yourself? Why do others have to do the work? If you think a better job can be done do it!

I think that's what she intends to do, she's just seeing what people thought about the idea first.

well that's good then...I think I just missunderstood. I thought she was putting people down...sorry if I was rude, I don't mean to be a fire starter

My roommate & I used to run one like that - a monthly challenge community called [livejournal.com profile] furorscribendi (for Lotrips & KA fic) - where we threw out 'complex' challenges & people were expected to write at least 500 words. It had a pretty good run, too, then interest in both fandoms waned & we ended it.

But it'd be nice to have a fandom-specific challenge comm again.

Must the ideas come only from fellow writers, or may readers throw out a few bunnies? I think it's a splendid idea, but as I read only, I shouldn't get much say.

Thanks for bringing the subject up - I saw on Bean-Squee you offered to spearhead this - very generous.

I tend to write general actor RPS now rather than specifically LOTR folks because I got bored. The last thing I wrote was Liam Neeson/Jeremy Irons. I haven't touched LOTR people in probably over a year. Sounds like an intriguing concept, though.

Can't write, but will surely read.
Thanks!

Oh yes - I have loads of (probably not-very-workable) ideas, just no talent to bring them to fruition. Imagination isn't my problem , it is procrastination (and afore-mentioned non-talent) that stops me in my tracks. A bit like starting an assignment - sometimes you want to what is expected, and other times you want a blank page ... and then get performance anxiety :)
