Insurmountable

The climb is hard. He thinks of a helicopter overhead and is glad of the burn. It blinds him to Orlando soaring above.

Sean likes the analogy. It’s been an uphill struggle, this attraction, and always, always, has Orli floated effortlessly just out of reach.

He remembers Orlando’s arms around him in Moria. How they cradled his chest, and pulled him close against an erratic heart beat. He recalls the lithe body that broke his fall, splayed invitingly behind him.

He has committed to memory the brush of lips against his hair.

Sean doesn’t know if he can make it.

Until he reaches the top.

At the summit, everything comes into focus. The view below him is breathtaking. He takes a moment to survey what is spread out before him.

There are acres of smooth, brown skin. Untouched, Sean thinks.

He sees chocolate eyes follow every nuance of his hands, and every lash of his tongue. He is insignificant here yet he sees everything.

This pinnacle, in this moment, is perfection.

He feels the breath against his ear and the accompanying sigh. It is the sound of the wind. Sean is breathless, dizzy, and he blames it on the altitude.

***

When the world tilts and he falls, Sean barely notices. He feels the plummeting sensation in the pit of his belly but rejoices that there can be no return.

There have been men before but not like this.

In the moments when they are weightless he tells Orlando that he loves him.

The look on Orli’s face as they fall ever further into one another is captivating. Sean is struck dumb by the abandonment he sees.

There is mist here and it is damp and cold but Sean pays it no heed until it becomes harder to see Orli’s face.

***

He relies on Orli to guide him.

For Sean, there is no longer any top or bottom there is only ‘yes’. He cannot determine his direction or if Orli is above or below him.

He denies Orli nothing.

The force of the descent lessens Sean to someone unrecognisable. Orli, who sometimes lingers in the circle of his embrace, is only more - everything.

For a while, Sean believes that he floats as naturally as Orlando does.

When he shatters upon hitting the ground Orli smiles down at him.

Orlando floats effortlessly out of reach. He drifts, waiting for the next breeze.

This is so gorgeous! thank you very much for sharing it with us.

(an aside) when I was in New Zealand I saw the place where Sean refused to ride the helicopters too, and it's a very steep climb. But after seeing how sorta cavalier their pilots are about certain flying matters I think I can sympathize a bit more with his fear, especially since that was during winter.

How exciting for you! Wow! I was there two months ago. Yes, it was at Queenstown, just over the ridge of the Remarkables (west, I think). There's a ski area there which no one seemed to know the name of and above the ski slopes there's a very steep skree slope with a largish lage at the top, and a much smaller one below. This is where they filmed the Company exiting Moria, when Aragorn splashes across that little body of water. They also did some of the Caradras stuff there too. Sean took the ski lift up part way, and climbed the rest on foot. The only way you can really see it for yourself is to book a helicopter -- use HELIWORKS in Queenstown, they did all the flying for the film company and will tell you stories, take you to the exact spots, and let you see their pictures! I hope you're having fun in NZ. I sure did -- the nicest place I've ever been in my life.
