Geheimsprache

Hannah knows something is different the moment she sees Elijah walking – not running – to meet her at the gate. His hug is loose, half-assed; the brush of his fingers on the back of her neck reminds her of humid nights in Los Angeles, his stubby nails scraping her skin.

Very little about Franka surprises Hannah. Not the fact that she’s German, because, really, that just makes her a girl-version of Dom. Certainly not the fact that she reminds Hannah of their mother. Lij has always been good at finding people to take care of him.

Franka’s lips, though, those come as something of a shock. The way Lij had been talking, Franka was head over heels for him. They acted like it too, cuddling and snuggling at every corner to the point where Hannah wanted to slap them both. So Franka kissing her behind the makeup trailer seems more than simply out of left field.

It seems like a betrayal.

In junior high, Hannah had to pick a foreign language. Everybody wanted to take Spanish (which made it an unacceptable choice), and Hannah thought French sounded like Martians with head colds. German, on the other hand, was sharp and strong, and was by far the least popular choice. Hannah took it every year until graduation.

Franka doesn’t act any different around Elijah. She still sneaks kisses with him in between takes, and, as far as Hannah can tell, still shares a hotel room with him. Elijah apparently doesn’t notice that while Franka’s right hand is reaching for his, her left hand is already halfway up Hannah’s skirt.

Lying in bed afterward, a sprawl of sheets twisted around elbows and knees, Franka begins to talk. She says she thinks of Elijah like a little boy, that he tries too hard to act how he thinks grown-ups should act and just ends up acting silly. She says he’s too mechanical, too unwilling to take control every once in a while. She says all of this in German, of course, not expecting to be understood.

When Hannah interrupts her, whispers Elijah wird immer ein Kind, and kisses her, hard and demanding, it is Franka’s turn to be surprised.

It becomes almost like a game. Franka will wrap herself around Elijah, daring Hannah to watch, and murmur into his ear. Hannah will shift in her seat, or laugh, and Lij will smile and shake his head, the picture of oblivion.

It isn’t about the sex, although there’s plenty of that. It’s not really even about friendship, although Franka’s fun and spunky and everything Hannah likes in people she hangs out with. It’s about this commonality, these cryptic languages between them, foreign words and hidden gestures, things Elijah will never understand. It’s about the appeal of secrecy, of having a secret as well as being one.

They don’t share a lingering kiss at the airport. They don’t cry. They barely hug. Instead, Franka scribbles a note on the free hotel stationary and tucks it inside Hannah’s backpack, to be read in the safety of her room at home.

German translations - these should all be grammatically correct, but if you think or know they're not, feel free to yell at me.

Geheimsprache: secret language

Elijah wird immer ein Kind: Elijah will always be a child

Fick mich, Baby, hier und jetzt, auf diesen Tisch – wenn wir dass nuer machen durften: Fuck me, baby, here and now, on this table - if only we could do that

Not now, but meet me at four o'clock in my room and my brother will seem like only a bad dream

My mouth will not quickly forget the taste of your voice
