Disclaimer: This is a work of FICTION. Fiction means “not-real events”. Don’t sue; I own NOTHING and NO ONE.
Notes: Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] vegetariansushi for the lovely betawork!

Kissing Elijah is like smoke and mirrors. His lips are cool and undemanding. Almost as if he’s thinking of something else. Someone else. Vague.

The scent of his cigarette clings to Viggo’s skin all day. Viggo doesn’t mind.

**

He has his own key. Lets himself in in the early morning. Slips under the covers silently. No apologies.

In the morning, his kiss is warm and full of promise. The Elijah that everyone sees.

**

“What do you like about me?”

“What do you mean?”

“What about me interests you?”

Viggo puts down his paper. “That’s not something I’d expect you to ask.”

“Why not?”

Why should you? he almost says. Instead, he says, “I don’t know.”

Elijah leans back against the couch. “So tell me.”

He’s quiet for some time. Tracing circles on the surface of his desk. Finally, “The way you change.”

“Change?"

He holds out his hands helplessly. “The Elijah I know…is never the Elijah I know.”

It isn’t an answer, but it seems to satisfy the younger man. He puts his head back on a cushion. Eyes closed. Slight smile.

**

He comes back after three weeks. Excited, talking nonstop about the parties and the women and Dom and outallnight. Viggo says nothing. Just examines the paint under his fingernails. Lets Elijah lean against his shoulder. They both sigh at the same time.

**

“Why do you let me—I mean, why…” Elijah trails off. Shrugs helplessly.

Viggo doesn’t turn around. “I don’t know.”

“I don’t want to.”

“I know.”

Slams a fist against the door. “You just make it so fucking easy.”

He says nothing. Footsteps. Door slams.

**

He comes back. Some version of Elijah always comes back. The light, romantic Elijah. The dark, sullen one. The vague, unreal one. It’s always Elijah. It’s never Elijah.

Viggo writes until the room is dark. The bulb is burned out, and he forgot to replace it. He shifts, stretches, and calls it a night.

Oh. I really like this. I love the idea of a multiplicity of Elijahs - all these versions, one of which might actually be real.

“You just make it so fucking easy.”

Gah. The idea that Viggo's indifference is the source of the fracturing, that Lij *needs* Viggo to care so as to have something fixed to hang himself on - just lovely.

A fascinating take on Viggo. It's still consistent with the idea I have of this man who takes extraordinary care to notice things, to really pay attention, because he isn't unseeing, he's just not making a judgement. And Lij maybe needs that judgement.

Sorry to ramble - just thinking through the ways this makes sense to me.

Thanks.

I rarely read Viggo/Elijah but this one was just.... wow. Wonderful.

Viggo/Billy? Wow, that does sound hard to write. I have a problem writing Viggo in general, so I just tend to stick to the hobbits and Orli. :) But since you seem to write Viggo so well, I can't wait for this Billy/Viggo.

Wow. That was so.... wow. God, I love the way you write.

What is it with me and these unusual pairings? I'm hooked. xD This is the second Viggo/Elijah that I've read in the past few days that has been REALLY good.

I love your characterization of Viggo, how he lets Elijah go do his own thing because he can't tie him down, or doesn't know how to, or doesn't want to. It's something that I associate with very spiritually attuned, or centered, people, because they understand that everyone has to go their own way and do their own thing.

Wonderful job. :)

They both sigh at the same time.

That was exactly the right touch. Nonverbal speaking. In the aftermath of Elijah's chatter and Viggo's silence, this is truly telling.

::smiles:: Now, since I'm happy to promote the pairing, I'd like to point you to [livejournal.com profile] azrhiaz's LJ. She writes wonderful Viggo/Elijahs, deftly blending believable characters with evocative, often poetic, description and nuanced emotions. I don't have handy links to all her stories, but she does have a website (http://www.nightsgarden.com/). Some of my favorites are the "Lick" series, "Spring" (which moved me to write a companion piece), "Hue", and "The Size of a Fever". I recommend that you leave a comment in her LJ -- if you ask nicely, she may give you the names of good Viggo/Elijah fics by other authors. Give her chocolate (and a little time) and she might even find you the links. ::grins:: It is indeed an unusual pairing, and very hard to find quality stories about them, but you can put stock in anything [livejournal.com profile] azrhiaz has written or recced. Enjoy!

I'm rather aggravated, because I went to see if I could find a link to the fic I was thinking of, and I have no clue where it is. >< So, terribly sorry, but if I do run across it somewhere, I'll be sure to let you know. :)
