Title: It wasn’t supposed to be like this 1/15

After much arguing, angsting, and blackmailing, I'm posting this fic here. Hopefully you will all enjoy it. Or at least some of you. Or maybe even one of you? This was started on Orlando's birthday this year. It was originally just one part... but it grew... ~_~ Thank you for reading it.

Orlando sighed. Some birthday this turned out to be. He glanced at the clock on the wall and sighed again. It was 11:30 pm; his birthday was almost over. Birthdays were supposed to be happy, joyous occasions. Why did this one have to be any different?

Last night he’d called some of the guys up, asking if they wanted to hit the town for a few hours. All of them had declined, spouting one lame excuse after another. Absolutely no one was available. He’d ended up lying on his sofa, staring at the ceiling. What fun. He’d fallen asleep rather early. Boredom does that to you.

He woke up early, all thoughts of last night gone. Today was his birthday. He was going to go out with all his friends, probably get drunk off his ass. To say that Orlando was looking forward to his birthday revelry was an understatement.

He waited until around 9 am before he started calling everyone. He called his mum first. Oddly enough, she wasn’t home. He tried ringing Sam. She too was unavailable. So much for calling family.

He then tried Billy. Surely he wouldn’t miss Orlando’s birthday. Yes! Someone was home! But...

“Orlando? Sorry, but um... I’ve got this thing tonight... I just can’t miss it. We’ll go out another night, okay?”

“Yeah, sure, mate... Some other time...”

He frowned as he hung up the phone. Had Billy really forgotten? Well, Elijah wouldn’t have forgotten! With a grin plastered to his face he rang the young American.

“Elwood! Glad I caught you, mate!”

“Orli? I hate to do this, but I’m kinda in a hurry. I promised Dom I’d meet him and I’m already late. Hey, man, will you be home tomorrow?”

“Uh.. yeah... sure...” Orlando tried herd to keep the disappointment out of his voice.

“Great! I’ll call you first thing tomorrow! Gotta run!! Dom’s impatient!”

Orlando sighed and he placed the phone back in the cradle. So Dom was out too then... Okay, so the night of clubbing was out. He seriously debated as to whether or not he should even call anyone else. It was his birthday after all. He shouldn’t have to run around trying to get everyone together.

The phone started ringing, brining Orlando out of his contemplations. He let it ring a few times before picking it up.

“Hello?” He really hoped it was his mum or Sam. It just wasn’t like either of them not to talk to him on his birthday.

“Orlando?” Ah... no.. it wasn’t his mum or Sam. It was that one voice that made him melt.

“Viggo.”

He employed all his acting skills to keep the desire and desperation out of his voice. Viggo wouldn’t have forgotten. Viggo would be there for him. They’d had a few tumbles in the sheets while they filmed the Lord of the Rings movies. Well, to be honest, they’d had more than a few. Both men had decided not to take the relationship out of Middle Earth.

There were times when he regretted that decision. Times like... well, every time he saw Viggo after that. He’d completely lost it at the New Zealand and LA premiers. He forced himself not to go to the others. He wouldn’t, no couldn’t, do that to Viggo. For all Orlando knew, Viggo had completely forgotten their time together.

“Orlando, I was just calling to tell you...” Happy Birthday. I love you and wish we could get back together. Yeah right, Bloom... not in this lifetime. “... that I got that jacket you left over at my place the other day. I got it cleaned for you too. Do you want me to bring it over, or what?”

Tears welled up in Orlando’s eyes. Viggo had forgotten too. No one remembered. He struggled hard to keep his voice from shaking. “Why don’t you hang on to it for awhile. You never know when I’m going to be over there, needing a jacket.” Real smart, Bloom.

Viggo chuckled, the sound wrenching Orlando’s heart. A lone tear slid down his cheek. “Right. You know that will never happen. I’m supposed to meet Billy tonight. You’re going to see him soon, right?”

Orlando’s brow creased. Viggo was meeting Billy. Elijah was meeting Dom. Billy had plans he couldn’t miss... Could it be? “Yeah. I plan on seeing him real soon.” He wiped the tear off his cheek. How could he be so silly and think his best friends had forgotten his birthday. That was rediculous. They just wanted him to sweat a bit.

He could just imagine Viggo smiling that dazzling smile of his. “Okay then, I’ll give it to him. I gotta run now. I’ll see you... around... sometime...”

“You got it! I’ll see you soon, Viggo.” He just couldn’t keep the excitement from leaking into his voice.

“Orlando... I don’t know about soon. I’m going to be pretty busy for awhile.”

Wait... that’s not the tone Viggo should be using... He sounds like he really means that. Must just be the method acting stuff again.

“Okay, Viggo, whatever you say. I’ll just talk to you later then.” Something just didn’t sit right here...

“Oh, wait a sec! One more thing.” Okay, this was it. Here comes the first happy birthday wish for Orlando! His heart rate sped up. He was about to just burst. “Elijah’s birthday is coming up soon, isn’t it? Have you though about what you’re going to get him? I think we should throw this huge party for him. What do you think?”

Orlando just stood there. He couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t think. He couldn’t speak. He suddenly felt cold.

“Orlando? Hello? Are you still there?” Viggo sounded genuinely worried. But then, that’s how he always sounded.

Orlando exhaled slowly. God, am I stupid, he thought. “Yeah... yeah I’m still here. I...don’t know... I haven’t given it much thought. I’ve had other things on my mind.”

“Well you best get thinking then!” Viggo chuckled, only this time Orlando didn’t melt. He shivered.

“Um, Viggo, I really have to go now. I’ve got, um, loads to do today. Laundry, that is. Yes. Lots and lots of laundry. And, um, the kitchen! It needs cleaning. Oh and I can’t forget-”

“Hey! Calm down! Are you okay?” Again, there’s that worried voice. Normally it would calm Orlando down in a heartbeat. Now it just served to make him more upset.

“Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine. I’ve just... gotta go. I’ll..just... go then.” He didn’t hear what Viggo said next. He couldn’t hang the phone up fast enough.

So Viggo really had forgotten. There was no surprise party. He wasn’t going to see any of his friends. He was going to spend this birthday completely alone. Well if he was going to spend it alone, he might as well do it right. He ran down to the local liquor store and picked up a few cases of...something. He didn’t even know. All he knew is that it would get him completely shit-faced.

So he began drinking around noon. He drank very slowly though. If he was going to be alone, then he was going to remember it. He wasn’t going to just pass out on his birthday. He’d wait until midnight first, then get royally pissed.

So here he sits, staring at the clock at twenty to midnight. No one had called. No one had stopped by. Everyone had just left him all alone. He hated being alone, even if it wasn’t his birthday. That was just the icing on the fucking cake.

The ticking of the second hand began to grate on Orlando’s nerves. What had he done to deserve this? Did no one love him anymore? He felt completely numb. He’s consumed a fair amount of alcohol by this point. The whole world seemed to get darker. Voices started talking to him.

“You are very right, Orlando. No one loves you anymore.”

“But they do! They still do! They have to!” His voice cracked. He was vaguely aware that he as talking out loud to himself. But no one was here. No one would care.

“That’s right, no one cares if you’re going crazy. No one cares about you at all. Look at you! So spoiled. Everyone hangs all over you. Rather, they let you hang all over them. Poor little Orlando, starving for attention. Funny how when you need it the most there’s no one here. Better get used to that, kid. You’re always going to be alone.”

“No... I can’t be alone.. I won’t survive alone! I need some one! Anyone! Mum! She’s always supported me! She loves me! And..and.. Sam! She loves me too! And Vig-”

“Viggo? Oh please. You’re nothing but a bother to him. You were just an easy fuck back in New Zealand. Now you’re nothing. He wants to get rid of you, but you just won’t go away. Leave him alone, brat. Just fucking leave him alone!”

Orlando whimpered, tears streaming down his face. “No... That’s not true.. I... love him... I would never bug him..” He couldn’t stop a sob from escaping.

“Fool! No one wants you! No one loves you! You’re a bother to everyone. Everyone would be happier if you were never born! That’s why they all ‘forgot’ you birthday. No one cares enough about you to remember. Viggo doesn’t care about you. He just wishes you would go away!!”

Orlando screamed and threw his bottle at the wall. “No!!” He started sobbing uncontrollably. “Just shut up! Liar!”

“If I was lying you wouldn’t be getting this upset now would you? Just admit it. No one loves you. No one wants you. Your ‘Viggo’ despises you, you know. Just face facts. No one’s here now. It’s just you and me and that broken bottle of cheap alcohol. Face it boy.... You’re done.”

“No!!!” He stumbled across the room and picked up a good sized piece of glass. “If you don’t shut up I’m going to make you!!” With that he thrust the glass deep into his torso. He looked down at it in shock. Broken words seemed to fall from his lips and he started to wobble. “Viggo” would never tell me to “shut up.” I love him and never want him to “go away. Now” I’ve really gone and “fuck”ed things up.

He tipped a bit to the side. He had visions of lying in pools of blood for days, not even missed. A small sob escaped him as he fell over. He tensed up, waiting for his head to hit the floor.

Only the floor never came. He opened his eyes slowly and through his tears he could make out blue eyes staring back at him in shock. Or was that hurt? He took a deep breath, glad for one last chance to inhale that intoxicating scent.

“Viggo...”

“Shh.. Orlando... Don’t say anything.” Viggo looked down at the young man in his arms. He saw the shard and sucked in a breath. “Oh Orlando, what have you done?”

Orlando tried to focus on the voice. Did he sound like he wanted Orlando gone? He just couldn’t concentrate enough to tell.

“Viggo,” I love you... Why isn’t my mouth working? Why can’t I say it? Why now?

“Hang on, please! I’m calling an ambulance. Don’t leave me! Not today of all days!” Orlando felt something wet fall on his forehead. Viggo was crying? For him?

He struggled to keep his eyes open, but gave in to the impulse to close them. As darkness overtook him he could feel Viggo hold him tighter. “Orlando, no... please don’t leave me... I don’t know what happened to you today, but it wasn’t supposed to be like this!”

As he went limp he thought he could feel a kiss pressed into his hair. He thought he could hear the words he had longed to hear all day: “Happy Birthday, Orlando. I love you, and I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”

Through the darkness he could see red lights flashing. He struggled to breathe. He tried to fight it. For Viggo. But he was loosing. He felt Viggo give him a crushing hug. He heard the man’s sobs. All he could manage was a faint “Viggo.”
