Dom lowered the newspaper he was reading and surveyed the mess all over their kitchen. He went back to trying to read about Bush's new plan to invade some obscure country, but just couldn't concentrate. With an exasperated sigh, he finally put the paper down and admitted defeat. He'd been reading the same article for nearly twenty minutes now and for all he knew, Bush was invading because someone had stolen his favorite hairpiece.
He walked over to the kitchen counter and began looking underneath it for the large garbage bags. The longer he searched, the more frustrated he became and the more he began to resent Elijah for leaving with the house in such a condition. Elijah had promised him last night when he'd finally whisked Dom off to bed that he'd make the kitchen his first priority in the morning. This whole thing had been Elijah's idea, after all.
***
They had been sitting in the living room about three weeks earlier when Lij made the announcement.
"I've decided we need to have a party."
Dom closed his book, holding his place with finger. "You've decided? And why do we need to have a party?" Not that Dom really needed an excuse to spend time with their friends and get wasted.
"Well, you could call it a 'coming out party' of sorts."
"Elijah, I'm beginning to wonder if you have deep-seated fantasies about being a teenage debutante," he said with a grin and ducked the projectile magazine that still managed to graze the top of his head. Laughing, he tossed the magazine back in Elijah's direction. "Wanker!"
"Dom, you can be such a perv sometimes. Leave it to you to conjure up images of me in some puffy sleeved, hoop skirted prom dress. Sometimes I don't know why I tolerate you. It must be love," Elijah said sarcastically.
Dom crossed the room to where Elijah was settled on the couch, slid into Elijah's lap, and whispered in his ear, "Now see, I thought you tolerated me so much because I'm such a perv.
Elijah let out a throaty laugh. "Yes, well maybe I underestimated it's importance. My sincerest apologies." He pushed Dom back upright and gave him a quick kiss. "Now, back to my idea."
Dom sighed. "Okay, what kind of 'coming out party' are we planning?"
"One for us."
Dom raised an eyebrow.
"Sort of like an engagement party."
Dom began batting his eyelashes rapidly and fanning his face with his hand, doing his best impersonation of a Southern Belle. His voice dripping with sarcasm, he said, "Oh, Elijah, sweetie, are you proposing? This is so sudden." He was obviously very amused with himself until Elijah walloped him in the arm with his fist. At this, Dom burst out laughing and rubbed his arm. "If you’re going to be an abusive husband, I'm afraid my answer will have to be no."
Elijah rolled his eyes and waited for Dom to finish laughing before he spoke again. "Are you done?"
"Someone's in a mood today, aren't they?"
"Funny, I could say the same about you."
"Yes, but mine is fun and playful. Yours is so serious." With that last word he sat up straight and saluted Elijah with his right hand.
"Well, I happen to take our relationship very seriously. Apparently more so than you do."
Dom saw the sincerity in his lover's eyes and smiled warmly. He thought about how much he loved this man and how much he was loved in return. Not a day went by when he didn't thank the heavens above that they had found each other.
He adopted a much calmer demeanor as he slid off Elijah's lap to sit beside him on the sofa. "Okay, I'm sorry. I promise to behave myself. Tell me about this party of yours--er, ours."
"I just thought it would be nice have a small party to make a little announcement. Tell them about us."
"Lij, doesn't everyone already know about us?"
"I'm sure that alot of them suspect that there's something between us, but none of them know. Nobody's confronted us about it, and we haven't exactly made a public statement."
"Orli knows, " Dom said, laughing again as he thought about the day Orlando had walked in on them, drunk and making out on the couch.
"Okay, Orli knows, but he's the only one."
Dom looked at him with raised eyebrows.
"Right. So Orli probably told everyone who would stand still long enough to listen, but that doesn't mean that they know what really matters. They don't know how we feel about each other," Elijah stopped talking long enough to give Dom a quick kiss on the cheek, "They don't know that I love you. I just thought it would be nice to bring this out into the open where we can share it with the other people that we love."
"You're right. I think it's a great idea. Let’s have a party to end all parties!"
Dom gasped for breath as Elijah knocked the wind out of him with a tight squeeze.
***
The party turned out wonderfully. It was great getting the entire cast together for the first time since they had gone their separate ways. Everyone was very supportive, as they had all had their suspicions from the beginning.
The party was beautiful.
This, however, was not.
Dom grumbled about in a foul mood, picking up empty beer cans and paper plates, stuffing them into the trash bag. He hoped Elijah was having fun doing whatever it was he was doing at the moment, because Dom was going to rip him three ways from Hell when he got home.
"I promise I'll clean the kitchen in the morning, Dom. It can wait that long," Elijah had said, looking at him with shockingly blue eyes. Bedroom eyes. So Dom had given in, and they went to bed.
Elijah was so irresponsible at times, Dom didn't know why he tolerated it. Oh, yeah, because he loved Elijah. Okay. But that's no excuse.
A car door slammed outside. Dom braced himself to rip some ass, when Elijah opened the kitchen door. "C'mon Dom, we're going for a ride."
"You're fucking kidding me, right? Look at this mess!"
"We can clean it later. This is important."
"No, we can't. You promised me you'd clean up this morning."
Elijah exhaled slowly and approached Dom from across the kitchen. He gently took the bag from Dom's hands and set it on the floor. "Please, Dom. This'll only take a minute. It's important to me."
Dom gave in, again, and silently followed Elijah outside to the car.
***
Billy and Orlando circled the block, Orli driving and humming the "Mission Impossible" theme. When they got back around to the house, Elijah's car was gone.
"Let's go!" Billy said. They got the key Elijah had left under the mat for them and entered the house.
"Whoa, we made a total mess last night," Orli said.
"Yeah, I bet Dom is so pissed," Billy agreed. "Well, we better get to work."
***
Elijah drove. He drove, and drove, and drove some more, until Dom began to wonder where the hell Elijah was taking him.
"Where are we going?"
"You'll find out when we get there."
Dom settled back against the seat and sighed, looking out the window and watched the trees pass as they gradually made their way out of the city and into the countryside.
***
Billy groaned as he hauled the last trash bag out to the garage. He threw it down with a grunt.
"Whoa, I think the old man needs to get some exercise more often."
"Get fucked, Orli."
"Speaking of which, we have one more thing to do," Orlando said.
***
Elijah finally pulled off the road and parked in the middle of nowhere. "Well, we're here."
"Yes, but where is 'here'?" Dom looked around as he got out of the car. They were parked at the bottom of a low grassy hill. There were no houses, no buildings, no signs of civilization (save the highway) as far as he could see. There were trees, however, and a lake in the distance. A beautiful landscape.
"Just I place I like to go when I want to be alone," Elijah walked around the car and stood behind Dom, putting his arms around Dom's waist. "I wanted to share it with you. I've been thinking a lot lately, and I've realized that I don't ever want to be alone when I'm around you. I haven't come here in a long time, because I don't want to be here without you." Elijah rested his chin on Dom's shoulder. "I guess what I'm trying to say is... will you be my common-law?"
Dom gasped.
***
Billy doubled over with laughter as Orlando arranged the items on Dom and Elijah's bed.
"What are you laughing at?" Orli asked.
"That!" Billy pointed at the pillow.
"What? Hotels do it all the time."
"Not like that they don't."
"Oh, nevermind." Orlando checked his watch. "It's almost time, we better get out of here."
Billy giggled all the way out to the car.
***
Dom's body was alive with sensation the whole way home. Elijah's hand, warm on his thigh. The breeze from the open window, cooling the light sheen of sweat on his forehead. He closed his eyes and watched the sunlight dance behind his eyelids. Were they home yet? Dom was even prepared to allow the kitchen to remain in it's current state of disarray, at least for a few hours.
When they finally pulled into the driveway, Dom jumped out of the car before Elijah could bring it to a stop.
Elijah paused outside the front door. "So, you know, we have to clean the kitchen and stuff first..."
"No. It can wait."
Elijah raised an eyebrow. "You sure?"
"Yes."
"Okay..." Elijah pushed the door open.
Dom's mouth fell open. The kitchen was pristine. Fucking spotless. "How...?"
The corner of Elijah's mouth twisted up into a grin. "Our fairy Godmother did it. C'mon." He grabbed the waistband of Dom's pants and pulled him upstairs.
As anxious as they were to get into bed, Elijah and Dom both took a moment to pause and laugh hysterically at the mints and condoms that were left on their pillows.
