Somewhere around the New Jersey turnpike, dawn began to reveal itself.

Dom and Billy had been chatting about music, art and politics for hours as the bus travelled closer to it's final destination. Now, both were quietly dozing, knees comfortably banging together with the rhythm of the road.

The air outside the bus shimmered as it slowly grew lighter. Greyness enveloped the men and Dom was woken by the change in light. Yawning, he stretched, scratched his belly and looked at the man sat next to him. His breath caught in his throat at the sight of his new friend and he lay his hand on Billy's face in panic. Billy was very faintly shuddering and seemingly trying to fold in on himself; his arms and legs contorting, as if in pain.

"Billy... Billy.. c'mon man, wake up." Dom quietly said, gently stroking the skin by Billy's right eye with his thumb.

Billy woke with a start and went to clutch his head.

"You okay man? You look fucked." Dom asked.

"I'm okay Dom," Billy whispered through his fingers "S'just .. s'just a migraine."

He unfolded his fingers from his head and pulled his jacket tighter around his torso. Dom could see the tension in Billy's body and his pale face glowed against the dark of his seat. He leaned back down into the corner between the window and seat and shut his eyes. Dom realised he was still stroking Billy's face and pulled back, slightly shocked at how forward he was being.

It was half an hour until the bus pulled into the New York Port Authority terminal. Not a word had been spoken between the men in this time. Billy had just held himself, eyes shut, as if dead to the world. Dom had sat back, slightly annoyed at this turn of events. He thought that he had been getting on with Billy, that they had somehow 'connected'. The migraine had put an end to that and Dom felt slightly guilty that he was not feeling more sympathy for his companion. But Dom had never met anyone like Billy before, he had wanted more talking, more laughing and more Billy before they got to New York.

As the bus pulled into the terminal, Dom had no choice but to disturb Billy.

"Billy, sorry man, but you've got to get up now. We're here."

Dom stood up and grabbed their bags from the overhead locker. He looked down in sympathy at Billy's slow, pained attempts at movement.

"God Billy, you must have it fucking bad."

He moved both bags to his left hand and grabbed Billy's arm with his right. They slowly made their way down the aisle, Dom ignoring the strange looks of the other passengers at the state of Billy.

As they passed the man who had decided that Billy was easy prey earlier that night, Dom heard the harsh whisper of "fucking fags!" thrown at them. He turned and mouthed "fuck you" before continuing down to the door, more concerned about Billy than the homophobic fucker now openly laughing at them.

Dropping down to the asphalt, Dom looked over at Billy as he tried to hoist his bag onto his back without moving too much.

"Here... let me help." Dom said as he grabbed the bag for Billy and held it to his shoulders as Billy fastened its clasp.

"Thanks mate." Billy whispered. He hurt all over and knew he had to get home quickly. He had thought he had timed it perfectly, that the bus would get in while the city still slept in darkness. For the first time in years, he had got it wrong and now he would suffer for it. He could see that Dom was worried for him and this made him smile sadly. It had been so long since anyone had worried for him. So long since anyone had been close enough to him to be able to worry for him. It felt alien.

Billy's smile died as he realised that the journey was over, that he was back home in his own reality. The reality that he knew he couldn't share with Dom despite the connection Billy could feel between them

"Well... take care Dom, See you around." Billy quickly said as he turned and stumbled away down the forecourt towards the subway station. He was lost in the morning rush of people before Dom realised what had happened.

Dom was dumbstruck. "Fuck... Bill.. WAIT... Wait for me Billy". He grabbed his bag and ran. He pushed his way though the people looking for the short mop of blonde spikes that would indicate where Billy was. He was damned if he was going to allow things to be left like that.

He spotted Billy as he was turning into the subway station and ran. "Billy... Billy.. wait up."

Billy stopped in his tracks and turned to face Dom. In Billy's mind, he was just going to tell Dom to fuck off... to get out of his hair.. to leave him alone. Anything to drive Dom away. His mistake though was to look Dom in the eyes. He broke at the look of worry, confusion and pain he saw in them. He couldn't do it. He was feeling things he hadn't felt in an age and couldn't turn away from the person causing them.

Breathlessly Dom looked at Billy. Billy looked better than he had on the bus but he was still very pale in the half light inside the subway station. He grabbed Billy to draw him away from the crowd and into an alcove. "Billy.. I'm sorry to bug you. I know I'm being a bastard but I need your help... and I think you might need mine."

"Dom, I'm sorry.. I'm just not feeling too good. I didn't mean to run but I have to get home... I've got to... I need my tablets.. for my head." Billy stumbled over his words trying to cover for the confusing way he was acting. "What do you need?" he asked.

"Just need some help finding my way to Brooklyn... s'where Lij lives. I'm fucked if I know where I am now. I thought you could point me in the right direction. And.. I was wondering if I could get your number." The tips of his ears turned red and he looked at the floor as he said this.

Despite how much his head hurt, Billy couldn't help but smile at this endearing boy in front of him. Then his heart broke at the honesty there along with the knowledge that it was wasted on him. He cursed God and the Devil inwardly at his situation and he could feel tears prick at the side of his eyes. Determined that they would not appear, he quickly grabbed Dom and dragged him further into the alcove, away from prying eyes.

The pain Dom felt in his wrists was a shock and he tried to pull away. Billy had a firm grip though and Dom couldn't help but be drawn further in to Billy as he felt firm arms encircle his shoulders. He had no choice but to lay his head on Billy's chest and just be held.

"Oh Dom.. Dom.. how have you done this to me?" Billy whispered. His hands were firmly stroking up and down Dom's back. He pulled away and took Dom's face into his hands. For a number of seconds, they just looked at each other silently. Billy savored the delicious boy in front of him who had opened new faucets of feeling that he had forgotten he had owned. Dom saw a beautiful thing of mystery that had intrigued him on the journey. He wanted to know more.

Slowly, Billy drew Dom's face closer to his and as their lips met, Dom felt Billy shudder again, as he had on the bus. Their lips moved in tandem and tongues intertwined. Thousands of commuters moved past them oblivious as the couple kissed and held and stroked each other, blissfully unaware of the world of chaos around them.

After cleaning each other up (all the while giggling like fucking teenagers), they both emerged into the station and moved towards the platforms. Billy was in a state of awe at the young man next to him. How could this young punk have broken through the shell he had built about himself for so long in less than 24 hours? He couldn't comprehend what this meant. All he knew though, (which caused him physical pain in his chest) was that it could not last. His resolve could not be broken again. He felt so much for this young man already but knew he had to let Dom down gently however much it might hurt himself in the process. Dom could not be part of his life.

"Fucking hell Billy.. we did that in public... thats a first for me!" Dom giggled, moving his bag to his other hand so that he could grab Billy's arm. Dom was ecstatic, he hadn't felt this alive in years. "S'that normal behavior for you New York people?"

Smiling, Billy just shook his head and continued walking. He moved them towards the platform which would take Dom towards Brooklyn Heights. "Here's your stop Dom. This'll take you to where you need to be." He stopped and turned to Dom and smiled.

"So would it be too presumptuous of me to ask for your number?" Dom asked, the smile as wide as it was when they left the alcove.

"No Dom, it wouldn't be." Billy's smile was hard won. He was silently saying goodbye through touch as he rubbed his hands up and down Dom's arms. Leaning forward to hug him, he allowed his lips to brush Dom's ear. Pulling away, he reached into his pockets for his pen and a scrap of paper.

He wrote down a number. Whose number it was he didn't know. The tears threatened to break again but he held them back. Looking back at Dom he said "Give me a ring when you're settled." Dom grasped it and placed it safe in his pocket. The rush of wind along the platform indicated that a train was coming so Dom grabbed his bag. A quick grasp of Billy's hand and Dom was drawn onto the train with the crowd. The door automatically shut and he was whisked away from Billy down into the dark tunnel.

Billy stood silently for as few seconds as he let his guard down and two silent tears made their way down his face. Wiping them away, he turned back into the subway station to make his way home, to safety, to a lonely life he knew he could never share with anyone. Even if that person was a beautiful young man that had touched his black soul with light.
