Part Three -

Sean woke up later that day.  He felt cold.  There were no arms wrapped round him and no body snuggled into his.  No Christine.  No Elijah.  As much as he wanted to Elijah to stay, he knew he couldn’t cope with the new developments yet.  He had to sort things out first.  He had to have some time alone to think.  Perhaps do a little screaming at himself too.  So he had kissed him again and explained that he needed to be on his own.  Elijah had understood.

He dragged himself from under the covers and headed for the front door.  He picked up the newspaper from the mat and went into the kitchen.  Ten minutes later he sat at the table eating some toast and drinking a strong cup of coffee.  He opened up his paper.

The first thing that caught his eye was a story about a man who had just turned ninety-eight.‘He won the lottery and died the next day.' Sean gulped down the mouthful of coffee he had taken; he couldn’t deal with reading that.  He moved his eyes away to a different section of the paper.  The next thing he focused on was a bigger article.

A first time flyer was taking a once in a lifetime trip when the plane’s engine exploded and the replacement short circuited, causing the plane to crash into a field outside of Ohio.  Many were injured but only one lost his life.  Matthew Armstrong, 52 from Alabama, was on his way to visit relatives when the plane hit some difficulties. His wife and children are said to be distraught.

Sean sighed.  The irony of news was that good things were never reported.  He decided against reading the paper.  He folded it and left it on the table.

He stood and walked into his sitting room.  His and Christine’s sitting room.  What did that mean anymore?  Him and Christine.  As much as he loved Elijah he wasn’t sure what he meant without her. He had been with her so long.  She had been such a huge part of his life… if that was over then what did it mean?  He was already sick of that question.  What did it mean?

He didn’t know.
