This is a short vignette in what I've dubbed the Musings of Billy series :) No title, G-rated, and very short. Pairing: implied D/E and implied unrequited D/B.

Are there longer nights than those spent sitting between strangers on an economy flight from London to New York?

Billy doesn't think so. But then, Billy has only himself to blame for this. Billy Boyd, star of Lord of the Rings, travels business class at New Line's expense, in a cushy fold-down seat. Billy Boyd, private citizen, lives up to the stereotype of Scots worldwide and travels on an economy ticket bought from a cheap deals place on the Internet.

He's on his way to see Dom; or, more accurately, to listen to Dom. Hug him. Maybe stroke his shoulders a little. But first he's stopping over with Elijah, and isn't that ironic?

Billy usually doesn't consider age, his or anyone else's, to be a factor in how desirable they are or how they should be treated. But he's come to admit, lately, that there's something... poignant... about youth. He keeps a stern eye on himself, praying that he's not about to get all hung-up on youth, or worse, maudlin about himself. A mid-life crisis. Billy knows that he's still young, attractive, an object of desire; to many people all over the world, he is the unattainable one.

And yet when faced with the almost obscene way Elijah wears his youth - casually shrugged over his shoulders, well-worn, as if he can't see the usefulness and is about to throw it away anyway - Billy is so struck by Elijah's brightness of eye, softness of skin, plumpness of lip, that it brings a painful rush to his heart, a shock of recognition, he doesn't quite know why. Elijah's open smile can bring the prickle of tears to Billy's eyes for no apparent reason. It's not exactly jealousy - for Billy knows that the bond between Dom and Elijah was more than just based on beauty - but he can't help but feel overwhelmed when he's faced with it, as if he's trembling before a force he knows and resents and longs for anyway.

Dom had that aura of youth too when he first came to New Zealand, but months of LA seem to have rubbed it away like the bloom from a peach. He moves uneasily through the lively lit-up world of Hollywood and seems to like it, but his eyes are bloodshot, his skin pitted, his smile uneasy.

What Dom and Elijah both share, still, is a casual, youthful arrogance. They suck love out of Billy's bones, and somehow he always has more to give.

I really, really, really like this. Beautifully written; for example, this lovely bit about Dom: months of LA seemed to have rubbed it away like the bloom from a peach. And it's true, too, I think.

Poignant, melancholic, insightful. Thank you very much.
