2:14. Billy held his breath as he stared at the closed doorway, his palm placed neatly over the handset to the cordless phone he'd picked up off the nightstand. It appeared Dom had caught the call first, but when Billy heard disturbing words before he could answer, he caught himself eavesdropping.
"Dom! Glad I caught you... I think there's something I should talk to you about." Elijah's voice came over the line loud and clear, promptly followed by the sharp inhalation of a cigarette.
"Sure, Lij. What's up?" Dominic responded.
"Is, uh... is Billy around?" Lij sounded just shady enough to get Billy to cover the mouthpiece and listen intently.
"Yeah, I can go get him, hold on…"
"No!" Lij's voice went almost frantic before he fell back to his usual calm tone, "I mean, just... there's something going on that I think you should know about."
"Yes?"
"Well, it's about Billy."
"I got that, Lij. What's going on?" Dom sounded concerned.
"I know he told you all about how he confronted me and all that... but I've been thinking about it a lot and you should know he's really being square about your whole relationship thing."
"Um. Yes. I know that, Elijah." Now he seemed confused. "Is that what's got you so worried? You want me to know that he really cares about me?"
"Have you even stopped to think about any of it? It's crazy, Dom. Even you know that."
"He's my boyfriend, Lij. We do that. We care about each other. I know that's a new thing for you..."
"I'm not trying to be an ass here, Dom. What I'm saying is that he is *really* serious about this. Do you understand what that means?"
"We're in love, Elijah."
"Are you in love with him, or do you love him? There's a big difference... I mean, are you really prepared to spend the rest of your life with him? Because that's where he's at."
Billy gasped and closed his eyes tightly, knowing he shouldn't be listening but was unable to put down the phone. The boy was blowing things out of proportion, really. Anyways, Dom would know the right answer.
"Don't be stupid, Lij." was all Dom replied. It was simple and sweet, but didn't detract from Billy's need to know the response.
"It's a simple question, Dom. Are you in this for good? At your age?"
"What do you know about it, Elijah? You aren't here. You don't know what our life is like, man. It's good. It's great."
"But do you want it forever? That's a really long time."
There was a long silence and Billy waited for what could have been eternity, unsure of just how Dom would respond under pressure. It was a ridiculous question, to think about things like 'forever.' Not even he knew if their relationship was bound to last that long; past New Zealand even...
"I don't know." Dom responded quietly. "Is that what you want to hear, Lij? I don't want to think about it. Just drop the subject, okay? What does my relationship with Billy have to do with you anyway?"
"I just want you to think about what I said before, Dom. What if he isn't right for you?"
"And what if he is?" Dom shot back, getting angry.
Billy waited, but Elijah delayed his response again. 2:19, only five minutes into the illicitly heard phone call.
Then Elijah's icy voice replied; "Well, what if, Dom?"
Another long silence, then Dom responded, "I don't know, Lij? Alright? I've got to go, okay. We'll see you tonight..."
"Think about it over the holiday, Dom. Why don't you go to LA with me for the week off? Let Billy go be with his family."
"Sure, Lij. I'll think about it. We'll see what happens... okay? Just don't push the issue."
Billy felt himself tremble a little as they said their good-byes, and hung up the phone before falling back onto his pillows. It was a conversation he shouldn't have heard, about things that didn't really matter in the long run. So Dominic wasn't sure about their relationship. Was *he* really sure? Was there such a thing as a relationship that really lasted forever, especially among movie stars?
Before he could give much thought to the questions revolving in his brain, Dom's familiar footfalls padded down the hallway towards his door. Billy rolled away from the door and feigned sleep.
The door opened quietly and he heard Dom's hollow chuckle. "Still napping, love?"
Billy was torn, but he knew it would be a lie to not respond at all. "Mmm?" He rolled back over and rubbed his eyes slightly. "No, 's okay..."
"Lij called, I hope the phone didn't wake you." He shrugged, smiling sheepishly.
"No, I was just getting up anyway. Can't lie around in bed all day like an old man." Billy forced a smile, still attempting to shake the odd feelings dredged up by the conversation.
Dom grinned and jumped on the bed, wrapping his body around Billy's like a child would. "Ah, but you're my old man." He giggled and proceeded to tickle Billy's sides.
"Hey! Dom!" Billy squealed, eventually forcing himself away and off the bed.
"What's wrong? You love tickle fights..." Dom sat up on the bed and crossed his legs, a slight pout pushing out his lower lip.
"Not in the mood." Billy sighed, and then went to his drawers to pull out a change of clothes.
Dom was silent a moment, the quietly asked; "You alright? You don't seem well."
"Just tired, Dom." Billy half turned and tossed his lover a weary smile. "Very tired." It was only a partial lie; the filming was becoming more physically intense, and the days off spent drinking were fewer and farther between in favor of long naps and days in. Truth be told, when he saw the smile light up Dom's eyes made him go weak in the knees, he knew that Elijah had been right. He really was in it for the long run. And Dom's uncertainty worried him.
"I'm sorry, I've just got so much energy today... don't know where it all comes from." Dom laughed slightly as Billy pulled out a clean shirt from the wardrobe.
"Maybe you should go out and play with Elijah." Billy came off as
sounding far more upset than he intended.
Dom was silent for too long, and Billy turned to see him staring down at his feet while he picked at his toes.
"What?" Billy sighed, crossing his arms and staring back towards the bed, "The little brat's always got energy to burn… maybe you two could run around the block a few times or something."
Dom didn't smile, as he usually did when Billy called Lij a brat. Of course, given the conversation he'd just had it made a little sense. Sounding a little cold, and continuing to mine between his toes Dom responded; "Sorry. I just thought we could fool around or something."
Fool around? How could Dom possibly be thinking of fooling around when there was major upheaval going on? Then again, it seemed Dom's answer to most questions involved fooling around.
Billy pushed back his own tirade in the making and turned away from the bed, now going towards the doorway. "Don't apologize. I shouldn't have said it like that."
"Billy..." Dom's voice slid into another worried tone. "Can we talk?"
Billy felt his stomach drop, and he stopped in the doorway. "Sure Dom, just let me go take a bath and when I'm back..."
"I think I need to talk to you right now." Dom's voice softened once more, as though he had a lump in his throat.
He turned back slightly and flashed a slight smile, knowing that Dominic's tone meant bad news. "I won't be gone long, Dommie."
"It's about us."
Ladies and gentlemen, the bomb was dropped at approximately 2:25 in a remote location in New Zealand. We take now you to live press coverage...
Billy looked down, feeling the dread seep in. "Oh. I suppose..."
"I'm worried, Billy." Dom's eyes were still downcast as Billy whirled back around. When Dominic looked up, a note of fear... and perhaps the faintest hint of masculine tears clung in his steel eyes.
"What's to worry about?" He tried to play dumb, hoping that it wasn't about the overheard phone call.
Dom shook his head slightly and let his shoulders drop, not at all unlike a child. Billy slid onto the mussed sheets of his own bed and traced a nervous circle on the blue duvet with his fingertips. "Billy, I've... I don't know how to say this..." His breath caught, before exhaling a giant sigh. "I love you, Bills." A dry smirk emerged on his lips, only to be squashed by whatever was weighing on his mind. "I've loved you since the first time... since we, you know..."
"I know, Dom. You don't have to tell me that you love me." Billy's voice rose to an uncomfortably high whine. "I already know. There's no rush to prove what we have is real..."
"Billy, just shut up and listen to me, okay?" Dom looked at Billy with sad eyes once more.
Billy nodded, waiting for the inevitable. To be told that regardless of his own feelings, Dom was unsure of where the stood... what he wanted out of their relationship. In a way, it wouldn't be terrible, not by far... but it wasn't what he wanted to hear.
"Billy, there's something I did that you need to know about... and I'm not proud of it, but I don't wish it didn't happen..." Dom sighed and looked away, shaking his head. "A few months after we got together, before the thing with Lij... I had an affair."
RIP Billy Boyd, time of death 2:29PM.
Billy blinked in rapid succession, trying for the life of him to understand what had just been said. "You what?"
Dom swallowed slightly and looked down at his hands. "I slept with a girl I met in a bar when I went out with the guys. They don't know about it, but it's been eating me alive..."
"You cheated on me?"
"There's no excuse for it Bill, I know. But that's why I didn't come home that weekend. I didn't know how to tell you, and it just seemed better not to mention it at all. But I can't act like it didn't happen because I don't want to feel like I'm lying to you."
It didn't make any sense. An affair? Why would Dominic have an affair? And why wouldn't he have said anything about it beforehand? "Dom… I..."
"I understand if I've hurt you, I never meant for it to hurt... I just thought you and I would never get this far..." Dominic butted in.
"Wait, wait a moment... get this far? What are you talking about?"
"Well, love and all that. I mean... I knew I loved you... but I wasn't sure if I was in love with you... and you know those things happen and I was drinking... but that's no excuse for it..."
Billy stood up, then felt his shins buckle and collapsed on his knees on the floor. He was dizzy, trying to wrap his mind around the idea. Dom had cheated on him, with some girl he met in a bar. Did he have a right to be upset? They'd never defined themselves as monogamous, never in those terms... but it seemed to have been implied by their closeness.
"Billy, are you alright?" Dom was on his feet, rushing to where Billy had fallen.
"Wonderful." Billy pressed his face to the bed, closing his eyes against the blue fabric. "Simply wonderful, Dom." He sighed, then forced himself back to his feet... ignoring Dom's outstretched hand. He was well aware that he was probably overreacting, but it still hurt.
"I didn't mean for it to happen, Billy. And I never meant to hurt you... I just had to tell you." Dom sighed, taking Billy's hand between both of his. "Elijah said something that really got me to thinking that maybe it was a sign..."
"What, Dom? A sign of what?" Billy swallowed the lump in his throat.
"Just... that..." Dom sighed. "Nothing."
"No." Billy sat on the bed and blinked away a tear, trying to focus on the blurry 2:35 on the VCR. "I understand, Dom. You're worried that maybe our relationship is in danger because you cheated on me." He felt his throat close up, choking him to a whisper.
"Well..." Dom paced to the window, his hands lingering on the hips of his faded old blue jeans. "I just don't know how to feel now that you know. I guess in a way I'm relieved, but what does that mean about us?"
"Why does it have to mean anything?" Billy sat heavily on the bed once more and put his head in his hands, to consider the thought. He mumbled through his fingers, "Maybe this is just a test. I mean, I understand... I forgive you."
There was a drawn out silence and Billy could feel the tension building in the room. "I don't want you to hate me, but I'll understand if you do." Dom's voice was a pin drop in the silent room.
"I'm shocked, Dom. I don't know how to feel..." Billy sighed.
"Now you see why I've been thinking so much..."
Had Dom been thinking more than usual? It hadn't seemed much different, but Dom had always seemed a thinking type.
"Dom..."
Dom ignored him, and continued, "What if it means that we aren't ready for this kind of commitment?"
"What kind of commitment?" Billy's voice shot up a note. "It's not like I've got you tethered to a wedding band."
Dom was silent a moment, "But you want to, Billy. I know it... Elijah even knows it. I don't know if I'm ready for that kind of thing." He sounded as though he was holding back too much emotion. "I mean, what if now isn't the time... or I'm not the one. What if you need someone that won't cheat on you? Or someone that me..."
"Stop it, Dom. You're being stupid." Billy forced a laugh. "It was just one little fling, it's not like you want to start doing it on a regular basis."
"Yeah." Dom's voice was shallow, as if he was concealing himself once more.
"Right?"
The room was silent.
"Right, Dom?"
"Bills... I..."
And that was all Billy needed to hear. The doubt was there, that much was certain. Maybe Dom deserved more; maybe it wasn't time. It didn't matter, the doubt was enough. "Alright Dom, I understand." His voice was choked with tears he didn't want to come. He forced himself into docility, into submission. Honesty was better than lies at least.
"I... Billy, I don't know what I want. Who knows what could happen tomorrow? All I'm saying is that maybe we're moving too fast here... can we leave it open for now? Just open to the thought that maybe certain things might happen..."
"Open. Fine." Billy sighed, not sure if that's what he really meant. "I get it, Dom. You need your space."
"Yeah." Dom turned and smiled in time to catch Billy's eyes, his sadness echoed. "And you need yours, too..."
"Sure." Billy forced another smile.
"Glad we could talk about it." Dom laughed slightly. "I... mean, I'm glad you aren't too hurt over what I did..."
Billy nodded, biting into his lip, "Look, I need to hit the shower, okay?"
"Yeah, good." Dom nodded his head slightly. "I'm, uh... I'm going to go out with Lij and Orli if you don't mind... I mean, because I know you probably need to think about it."
"Yeah." Billy swallowed, smiling when Dom bent to kiss him gently. "Yeah."
