Geocities Closure = Lost LOTR-fics! = New Comm!

Ok. Yesterday I got sad. Then I got upset. Then I created a community.

Geocities are closing the curtains on the 26th of October. It means a lot of fics getting lost into dead cyberspace..

Please unite as a Fellowship! We only have 2 weeks left!

I´ve been computerless for the last couple of days and couldn´t do the research I wanted. And now I´m worrying mostly for the pissing-off-authors-part of it. I want so badly to make something good out of this! *is frustrated and some more frustrated*

Well, of course this is a good idea (I shudder to think how much of early fandom will be affected by this), but I have to add that if I were a Geocities authors just to be reposted on that without any notification I'd definitely be pissed. Authors tend to be very possessive of their fic, they generally don't like people just taking and putting it elsewhere. Even if their intentions are good.

Hmm.. yes I know, that thought flew by in the process, and looking at the comm-idea now - a few days after my hysterical outburst I´m thinking that maybe it´s not one of my best ideas. I don´t know which way to do it right though - if there is a way, and I so desperately wanted to to_something. But of course I don´t want to piss off any authors.

Mhm, have you looked into possibilities to grab whole websites? There are programs for this, usually if you want to surf offline. This way you could at least preserve things you like yourself for your personal "consumption".

I´m battling daily with trying to make an understanding agreement with InsaneComputer in general and ScaryInternet in particular. I wish I had the knowledge to do something like just uh.. adopt a website or two *didn´t even know that was possible to do!* I suppose with time ticking fast and my limited computer-knowledge it´s probably a suicide mission for me.
But I´ve learnt of some resque-projects around and I kind of hold onto the hope of them, that there´d be some more time after all. It´s just sad whatever disappears in fandom-history..

LOL, believe me the battling will get better the longer you hang around online:) I've also seen quite a few rescue projects around, I hope they'll save a lot of the old stuff!

I don't want to make a counter-post, but could you please edit to include some of the following in this post

I think these parts of fandom history are worth saving! There are several ways to keep the content on the web:

• Get an account on An Archive of our Own (where fandom owns the servers). It's the Geocities Rescue Project


• Move to Yahoo Web Hosting ($5 per month for the first year). This at least gives some time.


• Move to another free site


• See if it's in the wayback machine in Internet Archive (they have lots of geocities saved)


• Check with Archiveteam.org (a group of volunteers) which is saving all they can

Oh this is reallyreally good news! Thankyou SO much for posting this and responding. I´m relieved to see that there are people who care about history, even if it´s a relatively small part of it. (Huge to the fandom anyway.) I need still to check these projects out more carefully, i´m not so good at this eh..technology-things but it might be some chance then, to catch up on non-saved fics even after the damn thing has closed.. *prays*
