ADMIN: Happy New Years & Birthday Fellowshippers!
Another year gone, and this community is still going strong. It was six years ago this month that Fellowshippers was created. We now boast 1700+ members, 14,000+ entries, and a continuing fellowship that proves this fandom is not dead, contrary to popular belief.
We also start the year with the brilliant news that, all apparent grudges set aside, the film production of The Hobbit is finally going forward. I for one hope that it also gives our fandom a little boost.
I would like to begin this year at
fellow_shippers with a few notes to clear things up, and a couple of rule changes.
• Please note that discussion pertaining to LOTR and all of its actors is welcome here, particularly where said discussion refers to slash and fanfiction. When The Hobbit reaches pre-production and offical casting news abounds (and yes, the rumour mills are already flowing), I am happy to allow discussion and invite the forthcoming offical actors into our fellowship and fiction. Simply remember that in all discussions, be courteous and no flaming.
• As per LJ's latest shenanigans, this community has very grudgingly been set to "Adult Concepts". I realize not all content posted here is "inappropriate", and I am certainly nobody's babysitter. However, I do not want this community nor your entries within it getting flagged, which is one thing I have no control over. Which leads us to...
• I am amending our old rule which read: "Please do not link to friendslocked posts in this community". In light of LJ's current issues, I understand how some of you would like to keep your fiction among friends. The amended rule reads: Please don't friends-lock your entries within the community. If your post links to a locked journal, please note this and provide readers a way to contact so you may add them to your friends lists.
• NEW RULE: Please include at least one pairing and a rating in the title box or entry outside of any cuts. If there are no pairings, or multiples (more than three) simply say so and your fic will be tagged as such.
Why now, after all these years? First, by providing a rating outside of your cut, you are hopefully helping to prevent some idiot from clicking the link and getting their delicate sensibilities all offended, and thus flagging any posts. According to LJ, the more posts are flagged, the more likely the comm is reviewed for offensive content by The Powers That Be, as well as potentially your own journals that are linked here. We don't want that.
If you are unsure of how to rate your piece, here's a little rundown of the simple ratings I use to tag (these aren't law, just suggestions, btw):
G = General, nothing overt or bad language
PG = Some innuendo or sensuality, kissing, groping, bad language (I tend to lump PG & PG-13 together)
R = mild sexual situations, language, violence
NC-17 = explicit sex, language, violence, kinkier stuff
Keep in mind I don't have time to read through everyone's fiction to determine pairing and ratings, so I rely heavily on you to rate yourselves as you see fit. Use your best judgement. I'm instituting this rule to hopefully keep this community as open and friendly as possible, lest our overlords force us under lockdown.
As for providing pairings,
angiepen makes the valid point that, with so many stories out there, it is simply very difficult for many F_S users to keep track of what they are actively reading, and a provided pairing can help keep us all on track based on our individual tastes. And as your mod, I would really, truly appreciate it on a personal level. This past month of December alone, the community had more than 70 fiction posts that need to be individually tagged. Many are chapters in ongoing series, and some with no notation of their contents. I simply can't always remember which pairings go with which story in order to tag your work, and I'd rather not have to go digging to find out. It makes me lose my place amongst those 70+ entries, and I'm only human, ya know? :) Just one pairing helps me feel like I'm making it easier for readers to find your stories. The more readers can find you easily, the more comments you gain on your writing. Which is the whole point, really; we all like to know our hard work is appreciated, right?
It needn't be more than a small notation (example: [SB/VM, NC-17])
In the case of anyone who has grown tired of all of LJ's hoopla and wants to migrate elsewhere,
msilverstar has created and moderates
fellow_shippers sister communities on GreatestJournal and InsaneJournal. Feel free to join and continue the fellowship there.
ETA: (Jan 9th) It appears that GreatestJournal is currently having some issues. Without being active there, I'm not certain how this affects the sister community. So IJ is your best bet for similar to LJ capabilities.
As always, your comments, questions and suggestions are appreciated. Here's to another six years and ever on.

I made you a maintainer of the IJ community, I only created it to reserve the name! (You have to accept the invite).
I also added a RSS client for this comm: http://feeds.insanejournal.com/f_shippers_feed/

Just as another data point, I'll mention that with all the bazillions of fics going by on my Flist, I very often don't remember whether I'm reading this or that fic, just by the title or whatever. Showing the pairing above the cut for every chapter at least clues me in on whether or not I might be reading it. Showing a summary (and something descriptive, as opposed to a "summary" which could easily apply to any of fifty current fics) helps even more. If I look at the header for Chapter Seventeen and can't figure out whether or not I'm reading that fic, I usually shrug and go on to the next thing on my Flist. I doubt I'm the only one, either. A header that says "Fic Title -- Chapter 17" and nothing else might be quick and easy, but it's not going to get you readers. Just a thought.
