No. I think he could do a good job with it. He's not just a grunting action-guy type. He's played other kinds of characters too -- check out Price of Milk, for example. And his Cupid in the Hercules and Xena series was really campy. If he can get the accent down, I think he'll be fine. And it'll certainly give the movie some nice eye candy. :)

Well, just as a data point, I've been a Trek fan most of my life too. I played Star Trek on the playground when I was in first grade, which was when the original series was in first-run once a week on TV. I was a fanatical "Trekkie" as a teenager and collected all the early books (except the Blish adaptations -- I got a couple and they were awful, as though he was working from first draft scripts, ick) and other merchandise. I got a Star Trek belt buckle in like '75. And all my Star Trek stuff was Trek Classic -- Next Gen hadn't been invented yet and I've never gotten into any of the later series anywhere near as passionately as I got into the original. So I know what it's like to consider Star Trek to be your religion, especially the original series, although I'm not quite that fanatical now.

However, Star Trek is where slashfic was born. The whole "slash" terminology comes from the Kirk/Spock designation. You're certainly free to like or dislike whatever you want, and I'll smack anyone who says you "should" or "shouldn't" like something, but I doubt very much you're going to find a whole lot of agreement, certainly not among the female old-time Trek fans, that Star Trek shouldn't be slashed on principle. [wry smile]

And while you can probably find a lot of people who'll agree with you that Karl shouldn't be playing McCoy, most of the folks I've seen express that opinion just don't think he can do it because they see him as big-dumb-action dude. It'd be interesting to find out how many people are unhappy about Karl's casting solely on the basis that he's too hot and slashy [grin] but I doubt it'd be a very large group.

I don't know what to tell you, hon. Maybe the movie'll suck for other reasons and you'll be able to just skip it without feeling like you missed much? :)

Actually, it might. This is the eleventh movie, isn't it? Odd numbered Trek movies usually suck, so you might not have to agonize over whether or not to see it. ;)
