Chapter Twenty - Epilogue

Viggo Mortenson stood in the small crowd gathered in the graveyard.
Had all this been a dream?
Had he really participated in the deaths of two lovers?
Guilt rode him like a steady wave, burning and hacking away at his conscience until he was weeping.
Christine Astin stood regally, her head high, next to the grave of Elijah Wood. Other members of Elijah’s family stood with her. Alexandra Astin stood soberly next to her mother, looking lost and confused. To the left and behind them was the grave of Sean Astin. Billy’s grave stood silent, a little ways away to the right.
Dominic’s family stood by his grave, their voices hushed.
Viggo heard the viscous voice of his own mind.
‘Your fault, your fault’ over and over again until he was ready to scream.
He looked up to see D.I. McKellen standing next to the priest, who was at that moment delivering the eulogy.
Ian McKellen’s shrewd eyes seemed to bore into Viggo’s skull and he looked away.
“Viggo?” he heard a voice. He turned around and saw Orlando there. He nodded at him but didn’t speak.
They stood in silence as the earth enfolded the bodies of Elijah and Dominic.
A silence that was deafening and eternal.

Viggo could take no more.
Before the priest was done speaking, he turned and walked away. He heard Orlando calling his name but he ignored him. Within a moment he was caught and turned forcibly around.
“Leave me alone.” He whispered. All he wanted to do was be alone, to weep for lives lost and terrible, unforgivable mistakes.
“No. Viggo, look at me.”
It was Orlando.
“No.”
“Viggo.” Orlando said quietly. “You must not blame this on yourself!”
Viggo laughed harshly.
“It’s too late for that.”
“No, Viggo, it’s never too late.” Orlando took his shoulders and shook him lightly. Viggo reluctantly looked up into his eyes.
“Their death was not in vain. You carry your own burdens, Viggo. Don’t carry the weight of the dead.”
Viggo sighed heavily, wanting to ignore those words of truth.
“They’re together Viggo.” Orlando said firmly. “They’re together now.”
“But not alive.” Viggo whispered.

Orlando took his shoulder and turned him around to face the small group of people around the gravesite.
“No. Not alive. But look, Viggo. Look there.”
Viggo’s eyes traveled the length of Orlando’s arm, back to the graves, to the small form of Alexandra Astin.

In one small, delicate hand she held a beautiful red rose. She looked up at her mother, who nodded sadly. She bent down, setting the rose gently across the graves, so that they were connected by it.
“For love.” The little girl said.

Viggo felt the despair and misery seep away, melting into the ground. He felt the warmth of the sun and the soft breeze against his skin. He heard Elijah’s voice and Dominic’s laugh.
He tilted his head back and took a deep breath of life.
“Yes. For love.”

Okay now I'm really! crying.

That was tragic, the end bit with Aly Astin and the rose. And the line from FOTR EV fit in perfectly.

Just sorry it had to end.

Oh my god. My internet was down yesterday, so when I knew it was back up today, first thing I did was read this. And now...it's over. I can't believe it. This is such an amazing and powerful story. And this last section was so full of emotion and beauty.

A silence that was deafening and eternal. That line pushed me over the edge into really crying.

“Their death was not in vain. You carry your own burdens, Viggo. Don’t carry the weight of the dead.” This line is just...right.

And then the who section with the rose- so gorgeous and just amazing.

Reading this was an incredible journey, and thank you for letting us all experience it.
