One Year On - (A First Wedding Anniversary Snapshot)
Mid-day… but which day? Was it still yesterday, or was it now tomorrow? Dominic looked at his watch and then at the airport departure board. He yawned and shook his head in a desperate effort to fight off the weariness that was claiming him.
“Hamilton,” he mumbled to himself. Three more hours of flying and then he would be home. Three more long torturous hours before he would be back in the arms of the man he loved.
Four days, Pete had said. Which, when broken down into actual travelling time, left Dominic with no more than twenty four hours to spend with Elijah before returning to Morocco.
Hot, dusty, lonely Morocco.
Dominic could still taste the desert in his mouth and felt that every grain of sand located in Ouarzazate, where he and the rest of Pete’s ensemble had been living for the past seven weeks, had settled permanently in his sun-bleached hair.
And what about the smell? That god-awful stench that never failed to make him retch every time he walked past the camel paddock on the outskirts of Ouarzazate? Dominic was convinced that the nauseating camel smell had permeated his skin like an invisible tattoo and had followed him onto the plane. God, how he disliked those fucking beasts. He had never been keen on camels at the best of times - especially as they liked to spit at him, some even going out of their way to do so. It was a conspiracy, Dominic had often thought. A bloody camel uprising against Dominic, the camel hater! But Pete’s new movie involved a whole caravan of camels, and they had become a necessary evil. There had been no getting away from them.
Dominic sniffed his hands, much to the horror of a passenger standing next to him.
“Camels…” Dominic smiled at the man.
The man gave Dominic a weird look and then quickly moved away.
“Camels… stinking, fucking, hideous camels…” Dominic looked again at the departure board searching for his connecting flight from Sydney to Hamilton, and then his heart sank as the green flashing lights of doom appeared. His flight had been cancelled.
“Severe thunderstorm, sir. Hamilton airport has lost all power.”
Dominic looked at the check-in clerk as she addressed his question.
“We are diverting all flights from here to Hamilton to Wellington instead - your flight will leave in forty minutes.”
“Wellington?” Dominic groaned as he ran his fingers through his hair. “That’s hours away.”
The clerk wished she could do more. “Would you like me to phone through a car rental for your arrival in Wellington, Mr…er…Mr…?”
“Monaghan.” Dominic felt resigned. “Sod it!”
The clerk looked at him.
“Fucking sod it…” Dominic looked up at the ceiling but found no answers there. He looked at the girl again, and then said, “No. No, thank you. I’ll just have to catch a plane from Wellington to Hamilton.”
“The flights will be backed up, sir - you may have to wait until morning.”
“Morning?”
“Sorry, sir.”
“Fucking hell!” Dominic pressed his fingers against his temples, his head was pounding.
“Sir?”
Dominic stared at her. “Right… yes! Ok!” He raised his arms in defeat. “Go ahead and book me a car. One way only, and make sure it’s a fast one!”
The clerk wasn’t sure whether to smile at this remark. Dominic placed his credit card on the counter, and then looked at his watch. It would be a six-hour drive from Wellington to Hamilton. He wasn’t going to make it.
Fuck to it all…
Dominic scribbled his signature on the car rental booking form.
“I take it today is a special day then, sir?” The clerk handed him back his card.
“Special?” Dominic shook his head. “No…no, it’s way more than special. Today is my first wedding anniversary.
“That’s nice, sir.”
“And he doesn’t know I’m coming home. I’ve flown half way around the fucking world to be with him… and now it looks like I won’t make it in time.”
*
Elijah threw his car keys on the kitchen worktop, opened the refrigerator door and extracted an ice cold bottle of beer. He popped the lid with his thumb and then walked into the living room, going immediately to the french windows. He stepped outside onto the garden that he and Dominic had laboured over last fall. It was going to be a beautiful warm evening. At last the horrendous thunder storms that had darkened the skies over Hamilton earlier had finally moved on.
Elijah took a swig of beer as walked around the garden, absentmindedly flicking leaves, ridding plants of any lingering rain drops. The telephone rang, and he immediately returned indoors to answer it. He silently prayed it was Dominic.
“Oh… hi, Mom.” Elijah sank into a chair trying not to let disappointment creep into his voice. He hadn’t heard from Dominic for almost two days, which wasn’t entirely unusual, it had happened once or twice over the past seven weeks when Dominic had not been able to secure a cell phone connection. But today was different; Elijah knew that Dominic would sell his soul in order to speak to him on their most special of days. Elijah glanced at his watch. Six pm - only six hours left before their day was over. Dominic would call. What if he was trying to get through now? Elijah talked to his mother a little while longer, not wanting to appear rude, and then ended the call.
He sat and stared at the telephone for a while willing it to ring, but it remained silent. He debated whether he would try to call Dominic himself, but knew it would end in failure as it always did.
“Where are you, Dom?” Elijah whispered. “Where are you?”
*
Dominic drove. He glanced at the digital clock on the dashboard - it was seven pm. He had been driving for two solid hours, with only four more to go. He could make it providing there were no hold-ups on the way. He could make it in time, with one hour to spare.
He felt like he was on automatic pilot despite managing to grab an hour’s sleep on the flight from Sydney. Three aeroplane rides in thirty-six hours. Why did Pete have to choose the arse-end of nowhere to make his next movie? Why are there no deserts in New Zealand? And why can’t this bloody car go any faster?
Dominic recalled Peter’s big announcement six months previously. With his last movie already signed, sealed and delivered, Fran and Philippa had been working on a new screenplay based on a prophecy from biblical times coming true in the modern world.
Ouarzazate in the heart of Morocco was the home of one of the biggest ‘desert’ film sets in the world. They would be going there for approximately three months from the beginning of October, wrapping, by Christmas.
“You liked it when we went there on our world trip,” Elijah reminded Dominic when he came home with the news. “Remember insisting that we fit Morocco into our African schedule?”
“Lij, that was different. I was with you. I like anywhere as long as I’m with you.” Dominic had looked forlorn; he couldn’t bear the thought of spending nearly three months away from Elijah.
“But think of the upside, Dom. You can get to wear that ridiculous Lawrence of Arabia outfit all the time.”
But Dominic wasn’t smiling. “Three months, Lijah,” he said. “Apart from the night before our wedding, I haven’t spent one night away from you since I handed our apartment over in LA, and that was almost a year and a half ago.”
Dominic’s face crumpled. “Oh shit! You know what this means, don’t you, Lij?”
“What?” Elijah took hold of Dominic’s hands. “What, Dom?”
“I’m not going to be here for our first wedding anniversary. Aww, Jesus fucking Christ! That’s it. I can’t go. I can’t be away from you, Elijah… no way. I’m going to have to tell Pete, I’m sure he’ll understand.”
Of course Peter understood, but Dominic was still part of the production team, and therefore obligated to go, and as the weeks gradually crept closer to the departure date, Dominic became more and more agitated, and it was all Elijah could do to calm him down.
“Dom… it’s only eleven, possibly twelve weeks maximum.” Elijah padded barefoot into the kitchen where Dominic was making himself a cup of coffee. It was four in the morning, a week before departure.
“The time will pass quickly,” Elijah continued, “for both of us. We’ll both be busy… you’ll see.” He picked up an empty cup and handed it to Dominic, hoping that he sounded positive.
“You are kidding, right?” Dominic turned to face Elijah who was standing in front of him with bed tangled hair, dressed in his robe, which hung loosely, barely concealing his naked body.
Elijah just looked at him.
Dominic stepped towards Elijah and took his hands in his own. “I didn’t marry you to be apart from you, Elijah…” He pushed a lock of hair away from Elijah’s eyes. “God knows I went through enough of that when you were ill. I’ve become a part of you now. I don’t want to go. It’s going to hurt too much to leave you behind.”
Elijah knew there was nothing he could say to lift the morose mood that had settled over Dominic. He wrapped his arms around Dominic’s bare waist.
“We can phone, Dom…” Elijah whispered. “Every single day…”
“It won’t be the same, baby.” Dominic held Elijah tightly. He closed his eyes. “It just won’t be the same.”
*
Elijah turned off the television; he wasn’t concentrating on it anyway. It was now dark outside… the day would soon be over. He picked up his dinner plate and scraped the half eaten remains into the kitchen bin. He leant his hands on the worktop and stared at the white tiles. This time last year was his wedding night.
He returned to the living room and stood by the open french windows again; it was a balmy evening. He looked up at the night sky; the stars were obscured by a thick layer of cloud. He wondered what Dominic was doing right now. Knowing Dominic, he would be hell to live with today.
Poor Dom.
Elijah took a seat on the patio step outside the windows, and looked at his wedding ring, remembering when Dominic had placed it on his finger. The white metal shone where the living room light fell upon it - the pewter strands from his bracelet embedded in the platinum were easy to see. The strands gave the ring a slightly flawed look, but of course Elijah knew better. Those strands had a story to tell.
Elijah twisted the ring on his finger; something he did now and then out of habit, but it also gave him comfort. He hummed quietly to himself. The wait would soon be over, and then he would go to bed. Dominic would probably call him tomorrow, full of apologies and more likely, anger. Dominic didn’t like failure, and more than anything he hated to let Elijah down. But Elijah knew the situation; Dominic could be out in the middle of nowhere, at some ancient ruin. Satellite connection in the desert was not good at the best of times; Elijah had never been able to make a connection from his land phone or cell phone, so it had been left to Dominic to make all the calls, which of course only added to the pressure Dominic was under. Elijah glanced over his shoulder at the telephone sitting silently on the coffee table. No amount of willing was going to make it ring.
*
Dominic hurried from the shop on the garage forecourt to his car. His car keys were gripped between his teeth, in one hand he held a large black coffee-to-go, and in the other a day old dried up deli sandwich. He balanced everything on the top of the car while he opened the door. He looked at his watch. Not bad, his - bathroom - need to refuel the car - need to get black coffee down me to stay awake - pit stop had only taken ten minutes.
He was an hour away and now felt hopeful. It was ten pm, two hours before the end of his and Elijah’s first wedding anniversary. If anything dared come between him and his route home now, he wouldn’t be held responsible for his actions. But the roads were quiet, so all should go to plan. Optimism wasn’t usually Dominic’s middle name, but he was adopting it now.
“Not long now, Lijah,” Dominic spoke to himself as he pulled out onto the road. He felt extremely guilty having not called Elijah all day, but he wanted this to be a total surprise. And what a surprise it would be! Dominic grinned to himself. No way in a million years would Elijah ever expect to see his lover walk in through the front door on this night.
What if he’s gone to bed? Dominic pondered that thought, and then shook his head. Knowing Elijah, he would stay awake until the stroke of midnight. Dominic put his foot down hard on the accelerator, and then took a gulp of hot black coffee. He was only fifty miles away.
*
Elijah dropped his clothes on the bathroom floor, and gingerly stepped into the hot bath water. He was more of a shower guy these days, but this evening he felt the need to just wallow and relax. He added some of Dominic’s bizarre bath salt remedies, and the aroma immediately soothed away any anxiety he had been feeling.
He held his breath and submerged his head under the water, keeping his eyes clamped shut; he didn’t relish trying to find his contacts amongst all the bubbles. When he resurfaced, he took in a deep breath and blinked the water away. This was amazingly relaxing, he ought to do this more often, preferably with Dominic in the bath with him.
Elijah sighed softly as he dipped his head back, letting his long hair swish in the water. He felt surreal, like he wasn’t really there, and then for the first time that day, the fact that Dominic wasn’t with him really hit home. He looked at his ring again, and frowned as his eyes fell on his scarred hand. He barely took notice of his scarring anymore, it had become a part of him, and as the doctors had promised the scars would fade in time, and that had already begun. No longer were they purple - they were more reddish now - but they looked vivid in the whiteness of their newly refurbished bathroom. The hot water and whatever concoction that was contained in Dominic’s bath remedy had given the scarring an angry appearance.
Elijah studied the long red ribbons on his hand and fingers, and raised his left leg to see the red lines standing out from his smooth skin. He barely ever thought back to that time two years ago when he almost lost his life. It was as if it had been a dream, not reality at all. But of course there were times, like right now, when he was reminded that it did indeed happen. He would carry the legacy of that short walk into the sea on a hot sunny day with him, for the rest of his life.
Elijah lowered his leg and submerged his body again. He counted half a minute before rolling onto his stomach and resurfacing. His hair covered his face and he brushed it away, aware that one of his lenses had become dislodged. He blinked rapidly and felt it fall back into place.
Dominic filled his thoughts. “Happy anniversary, Dom,” Elijah spoke out loud. He rolled over onto his back again. “Wherever you are, and whatever you are doing, happy anniversary. I love you, and miss you.”
*
Dominic sighed with relief has he drove past the ‘Welcome to Hamilton’ sign. Not long now. He glanced at himself in the rear view mirror.
“Jesus, I look like shit!”
He wasn’t surprised by his appearance. He looked tired, his clothes were crumbled, and he could definitely do with a shower.
“Lij is going to keep me at arms length…” Dominic licked his fingers and ran them through his hair, but it made no difference. He didn’t have time to stop off at an all-night garage for a quick wash - not if he wanted to make it home with time to spare.
“It could be worse,” Dominic continued talking to himself. “I could be sharing my wedding anniversary with a shit-smelling camel!”
He drove on… he was almost there.
*
Elijah finished drying himself, and yawned. He sat down on the edge of his bed, and debated crawling under the sheets and just going to sleep. Dominic wasn’t going to ring now, not this late at night. But then again, he might.
Elijah slipped on his robe and then rubbed his hair vigorously with the towel. When he combed it through he couldn’t help screwing his face up as he hit inevitable tangles. He removed his contact lenses, donned his spectacles, and then replaced his pounamu pendant over his head; the only time he never wore it was when he bathed and slept. He looked at the bedside clock. Forty five minutes, and his wedding anniversary would be over. He yawned again, and then padded barefoot downstairs.
*
Dominic felt his heart race as he turned onto their road. A few homes had lights burning, but for the most part everywhere was dark. As he approached his house, he could see the kitchen lights were on. Elijah had not yet retired.
Dominic parked the car, retrieved his holdall and then as quietly as possible entered his home. He could hear music. Elijah was in the living room.
*
Elijah was standing by the open french windows with a glass of champagne in one hand; a slight breeze ruffled his damp hair. He closed his eyes as he listened to the music he had selected to play during the last hour of his wedding anniversary. He didn’t hear Dominic enter the room.
Dominic stood for moment watching his lover. He felt a slight sense of déjà vu - for it was in this very room, with Elijah standing where he was now, that Dominic had proposed to him almost fifteen months ago. And now here they were, a year into their marriage.
Elijah sipped the cold bubbling liquid, and then stepped outside onto the patio. He held his glass outstretched towards the darkness.
“To you, Dommie,” he said, “wherever you are. Happy anniversary.”
Dominic smiled quietly to himself as he observed Elijah’s one sided toast and watched in silence as Elijah stepped barefoot onto the wet grass while sipping his drink, totally unaware that he was no longer alone.
The light from the living room only partially lit the garden, and as Elijah moved into the shadows Dominic quickly spurred into action. He turned off the music, picked up the bottle of champagne, and then positioned himself in the open doorway.
Elijah was still totally oblivious to Dominic’s presence. He was humming quietly to himself as he walked underneath the fledgling apple tree, planted only last year and yet to bear fruit. He stopped as he took another sip of champagne, and in the dim light Dominic saw Elijah frown as it finally dawned on him that his music had stopped.
“Shit… not another faulty disc.” Elijah gulped down the remainder of his champagne and purposely strode back towards the living room. He stopped dead in his tracks as a figure stepped out onto the patio.
“More champagne?” Dominic asked as if it was the most natural thing in the world that he should be there at that very moment.
Elijah was rendered speechless.
“Umm… I think we need another glass, don’t you?” Dominic suddenly felt nervous as he turned to fetch an extra champagne flute, but Elijah stopped him, grabbing him by the wrist.
“D… … Dom?” Elijah’s voice was shaky as he looked into Dominic’s tired face. “My… Dom?”
Dominic nodded sheepishly. “I needed to see you, baby…. I just couldn’t not see you… not today.” Dominic paused. “Not any day.”
“My fucking God! Dom?!” Elijah dropped his glass, not caring that it shattered into a million pieces at his feet.
“Yes…Lij…” Dominic grinned as he quickly placed the champagne bottle on the ground determined to get Elijah away from the broken glass, but the bottle rocked and fell pumping its precious fluid over Elijah’s bare feet.
“Away… come, Elijah.” Dominic took Elijah’s hand and pulled him away from the celebratory debris, worried that Elijah would cut his feet, but Elijah was totally oblivious to it all.
“Jesus Christ, Dom. I’ve fucking missed you,” was all Elijah could say as his fingers ran over Dominic’s face. “I’ve missed you so fucking much.” He gripped Dominic’s shoulders and pulled him towards him so that their mouths met, and in that solitary moment as Elijah’s tongue pushed its way into Dominic’s mouth, Dominic felt all his stress melt away. This was what he lived for; this was his life - this man in his arms. Nothing else could or would, ever matter.
Elijah pulled back to take a breath, and Dominic took that moment to take Elijah’s face into his hands. He looked into the eyes he had missed for so long. As always, even behind the spectacles that framed them, they were huge and so blue - the gateway into Elijah’s soul.
“Oh, baby…” Dominic murmured as he took a couple of steps backwards. “Stay there a moment, don’t move, I just want to look at you… you look so fucking great.” Dominic ran a hand through his unkempt hair as his eyes took in the heavenly sight in front of him.
“Christ, Lijah, I don’t know how I’ve made it through these past seven weeks without you. Leaving you always breaks me. I fucking hate it…”
Elijah swallowed hard as he stood silently, letting Dominic look him over. His robe, although tied together hung loosely, the black silk clearly showing his growing arousal. He still couldn’t believe that Dominic was here… in their garden, at midnight… not thousands of miles away, but here, right now… this very second.
“So… fucking… beautiful…” Dominic’s voice lowered to a whisper as he took in the vision of his lover standing only feet away from him. “Always so fucking beautiful, my Elijah.”
“Dom…”
“God! Come here, you.” Dominic reached for Elijah and pulled him back into his arms. “I fucking love you, Elijah Monaghan. I fucking love you.”
Their mouths met again, and at first they kissed gently, stopping to look at each other before kissing again, but weeks of suppressed passion stirred deep within both men and their kissing began to intensify, so much so that Dominic began to lose his balance as Elijah pressed harder and harder against him. He couldn’t help stumbling backwards, and fell against the french windows, grimacing as he felt them vibrate on impact. For a fraction of a second, Dominic wondered if the glass would crack behind him, but that thought quickly vanished into thin air as he felt Elijah’s fingers fumble with his belt buckle. The thought of Elijah’s hands and mouth upon him made Dominic feel weak with anticipation.
“Oh, God.” Dominic watched Elijah slowly unzip him and pull his cock free from the confines of his jeans; his erection was hot and hard, and Elijah’s fingers were cool as they gripped him tightly. Dominic felt his head spin as he watched Elijah drop to his knees and immediately take the tip of his cock into his mouth. Elijah then sucked it in - hard.
“Jesus… …” Dominic couldn’t help arching forwards, pushing his cock further into Elijah’s willing mouth; and Elijah continued to suck, his lips forming a seal around the solid flesh. Then he began to deep throat Dominic so expertly that Dominic knew he was going to come in seconds if Elijah did not ease up just a little bit.
Elijah then pulled back, but not all the way. He let Dominic’s cock rest on his tongue for a few moments enjoying the feel of its heat and weight, and then he began to lick it; the head first. He curled his tongue around and underneath the smooth dome, and then tugged hard at the ridge with closed lips.
Dominic did not know what to do with himself. He looked down at Elijah on his knees in front of him. Elijah’s tongue was sending him towards that point of absolute no return, and the simple act of just breathing had become difficult to master.
“B…baby…” Dominic’s voice was hoarse, barely more than a whisper. “Lijah…”
Elijah looked up at him; his hair fell away from his face revealing a mouth full of cock.
“Fucking Christ… Lij!”
Elijah removed Dominic’s cock entirely, and licked it from base to tip, leaving a long trail of saliva behind as he did so. His eyes remained fixed on Dominic’s face as he continued to work his tongue up and down the hard column, making sure he covered every inch of thick flesh.
Then he sucked Dominic in again, taking in his entire length, and as Dominic felt Elijah’s throat constrict around him sucking him for all his worth, his release finally came.
“L…i…j!” Dominic uttered Elijah’s name in one long breathless word as he folded over his lover. He held onto Elijah’s head for support grabbing handfuls of hair, groaning helplessly as his body involuntarily pumped hot fluid down Elijah’s throat. Elijah withdrew Dominic’s cock a little to avoid choking but held it tightly in one hand, lips still firmly in place as he let Dominic ride his wave.
With legs still trembling, Dominic sank to his knees, pulling his spent cock free from Elijah’s mouth.
“Jesus, Lijah! Fucking Jesus…” Dominic looked into Elijah’s flushed face, taking in his bright eyes and glistening lips which were slightly swollen from all the cock sucking that had taken place.
“You fucking undo me… all the time… all the fucking time, baby.” Dominic placed his lips against Elijah’s, and they kissed softly. Dominic then cupped Elijah’s chin in his hand. “But now.... now it’s my turn, to undo you…”
“Yes…” Elijah whispered as he stood up. He untied his robe and let it fall to the ground, and then held his cock, running his fingers up and down its solid length, smearing droplets which had gathered at the tip over his fingers. He then placed those fingers against Dominic’s lips, and Dominic sucked on them gleaning a small taste of Elijah he had missed for so long.
“You taste good, Lijah…” Dominic murmured. “So fucking good.”
“Then suck me.” Elijah removed his fingers and pressed his cock against Dominic’s mouth. “Suck me hard, Dommie.”
Dominic looked up at Elijah, feeling his lips part as Elijah pushed his cock inside his mouth. Elijah watched his cock slowly disappear as Dominic’s mouth and throat worked to accommodate him. Despite trying and failing, Dominic had never been able to master the deep throating thing, but he more than made up for it by using his tongue.
“Hmmmm….” Dominic pulled Elijah free, curling his tongue around the long shaft as he did so. “Come down here…” Dominic reached for Elijah’s hand, and pulled him down onto his knees. “Want to taste you, my Lijah… all of you.”
Dominic crawled forward… pushing Elijah backwards until they were on the damp grass.
Elijah lay on his back, the cold wet grass on his naked skin made him gasp momentarily, but that was soon forgotten as he watched Dominic quickly shrug out of his clothes. Their eyes met and locked as Dominic positioned himself between Elijah’s thighs, pushing them wide apart with his knees.
Dominic ran his hands up and down Elijah’s skin, watching goose pimples rise and fall in the wake of his touch. He then kissed the inside of each of Elijah’s thighs in turn, inwardly smiling as he recognised the familiar scent of his bath oils.
Elijah shifted on the wet grass as Dominic licked that vulnerable area where thigh meets groin, and as Dominic’s tongue lapped in that sensitive crease, Elijah gripped his cock, and pressed it against Dominic’s cheek.
“Suck me, Dom.”
Dominic felt the heat pressing against his face, and turned his mouth towards it, letting Elijah’s cock rest so tantalisingly against his lips. Elijah tried to prise Dominic’s mouth open and pushed hard, but Dominic turned his head away.
“Not yet, baby,” he whispered, and Elijah groaned in protest.
“Something else, first…” Dominic shuffled backwards a little so that he could lie on his stomach. Ignoring the cold grass beneath him, he pushed his hands underneath Elijah’s thighs and dragged him towards his face. Elijah placed his feet on Dominic’s back, letting his knees fall apart. Dominic then scooped Elijah’s balls to one side with one hand, and held them there before burying his nose and mouth in between Elijah’s buttocks, his tongue seeking, and immediately finding that tight hole. Elijah’s heels dug into Dominic’s back as Dominic’s tongue probed him. Then Dominic used his fingers to spread Elijah’s buttocks wider, allowing his tongue unrestricted access.
Elijah groaned quietly and in ecstasy. He held his cock and began stroking it slowly and deliberately. Dominic’s tongue continued its darting and probing, and then Dominic began to suck the soft puckered area of skin, making Elijah writhe in front of him. Dominic held Elijah firmly in place, and then returned to just licking again - long sweeping licks, with one aim in mind. He released Elijah’s balls and without a moments hesitation sucked one into his mouth, rolling his tongue around it, loving the feeling of this most intimate of acts, which he had never been allowed to do to Elijah before. Elijah emitted all sorts of noises in total bewilderment, and before he had a chance to protest, Dominic released him.
Dominic smiled wickedly as he looked up beyond Elijah’s rigid cock to his lover who was staring disbelievingly at him.
Dominic emitted a low growl as he crawled along Elijah’s body… and then when he was face to face with Elijah, he cupped his chin and kissed him hard while grinding his pelvis against Elijah’s solid erection, relishing how it dug into his stomach.
Elijah wrapped his legs around Dominic’s thighs as they continued kissing, and then with a twist of his lithe body he rolled over, taking Dominic with him. Elijah sat up, with legs straddling Dominic, and as he looked down as his lover, his hair fell about his face, a droplet of water splashed onto Dominic’s skin.
Dominic reached out and grasped Elijah’s erection, and slowly worked his hand up and down its entire length. Elijah sighed inwardly at the overwhelming sensation of a hand, not his own, stroking his cock. Dominic’s thumb caught a bead of precum, which he quickly sucked clean away.
Dominic licked his lips as he drew up onto his elbows wanting more of that exquisite Elijah taste. With their eyes locked on each other, Elijah edged forwards until his cock was within inches of Dominic’s face.
“Want more, Dommie?” Elijah asked as he tilted forwards.
Dominic just opened his mouth, and Elijah’s cock slid in.
Silence, except for soft murmurings from Dominic as he worked on Elijah. Elijah slowly rocked himself in and out of Dominic’s mouth, keeping under tight control the longing to thrust.
Dominic eventually pulled Elijah’s cock free and gripped its base. He ran his tongue up and down the solid column of flesh, sucking gently now and then on its circular ridge. He felt Elijah’s thighs tighten against him as he continued working on him, not letting up for a second. He alternated from licking to sucking, and stroking, and more licking, and kissing. Dominic loved kissing Elijah’s cock. He placed the head of it against his lips and kissed it several times, before pushing the tip of his tongue into the dark slit. Elijah let out a long quiet moan, and by the way he had inched a little closer, Dominic knew he was getting close to the edge.
Dominic then released Elijah’s cock completely, causing Elijah to grasp it in his urgency. Dominic smiled up at Elijah, and winked at him as he opened his mouth allowing Elijah to push his cock back in. Then Elijah withdrew, pushed in again, and continued withdrawing and pushing. Gradually Elijah increased his speed.
Dominic knew when it was time to regain control. He stopped Elijah, held him and sucked in his hard flesh, clamping his lips tightly behind the engorged head. He then pumped Elijah’s cock up and down, firmly and quickly, causing Elijah to moan repeatedly.
Elijah’s fingers lost themselves in Dominic’s hair as he searched for something to hold onto; his ride was beginning. Dominic gripped Elijah a little tighter and pumped him a little faster.
And then suddenly Elijah shuddered and jerked filling Dominic’s mouth with jets of hot fluid, which Dominic swallowed down greedily. God, how he had missed this… this closeness with Elijah, and the intimacy of it all. Dominic closed his eyes as he continued sucking and swallowing, not really wanting their love-making to end. Then he felt Elijah withdraw, and sit back on him, and for a second or two Dominic kept his eyes closed. When he opened them, he saw his lover smiling down at him.
“Fucking love you, Lij…” Dominic clasped both of Elijah’s hands. “Fucking love you, and don’t want to leave you. Ever again.”
Elijah looked at Dominic for a while before brushing his hair away from his face and lying down on the grass next to him. They wrapped their cool limbs around each other.
“How long do we have?” Elijah whispered.
“I have to leave tomorrow night.”
Fuck… Elijah mouthed the word to himself. Then he pulled Dominic closer to him and held him tightly.
**
Elijah quietly slipped out of bed. It was a glorious summer morning with the sun streaming through the open bedroom drapes.
“Don’t let me sleep in, Lij…” Dominic had said to Elijah before they finally went to bed. “I don’t have enough time to spend with you without wasting it on sleeping. I want to make every second count before going back to that God-forsaken place.”
Elijah looked down at his sleeping lover. Dominic was out cold, which wasn’t surprising; he had been totally exhausted, too tired to even take a shower before slipping in between the sheets.
“God, I love you so much, Lij.” Dominic had pulled Elijah to him, nestling his face into his shoulder. “I don’t wanna go back… Can they make me go back? What if I stay here? Fuck the movie…” Dominic’s voice had begun to slur as sleep descended upon him. “Do you think Pete’ll fire me if I don’t go back? Wanna stay here with you. Love you… my Lijah…. And no more camels… please…Christ… I must smell like a fucking camel… I’m sorry, Elijah…happy anniversary, baby. I love you… so much… love you… so …” Dominic then fell fast asleep.
Elijah checked his watch, it was eight am; he had an important meeting that morning with a new client, and which could not be postponed. He could be back in two hours, and then he would crawl back into bed with Dominic and wake him up using just his mouth. Elijah’s groin tingled at that very thought, and for a brief second he debated waking Dominic up right there and then… but he knew he couldn’t. Work first.
“Later… baby…” he whispered to Dominic as he finished dressing, then he was out of the door.

The ringing of the phone shattered Dominic’s slumber, and he woke with a start wondering where he was. It took him a few moments to remember that he was actually home and in bed with the man he married.
He glanced over at the empty space where Elijah should have been, and then looked at the bedside clock. It was mid-day.
“Shit!... Lij!?” Dominic sat up, ignoring the phone which finally ceased. He swung his legs out of bed, and then yawned, long and hard. “Lijah!?” he called again.
The house was silent.
Dominic ran a hand over his face, and through his mussed-up hair. In eight hours time he had to be at the airport again and that realization dragged him down.
“Lijah!? Baby!?” Dominic called through the open doorway, and listened for a reply. Nothing. He looked out the window and saw that Elijah’s car was missing from the driveway. “Where’ve you gone, baby?” Dominic yawned again and then padded back to the bed and sat down. He looked at himself in the wardrobe mirror opposite.
“You look fucking shite, Monaghan,” he spoke to himself. “No wonder Elijah has pissed off.”
Another yawn and Dominic shook his head. “Right…!” He stood up. “Shower!” He headed for the bathroom.
*
Elijah cursed as he drove home. He tugged at his tie, loosening it, and then unbuttoned his collar. It was too hot to be dressed up like a fucking dog’s dinner and for what? Fucking so-called clients called to say they were delayed, and then they called to cancel!
“Cunts!” Elijah was far from impressed. He could have stayed at home, and spent those few precious wasted hours with Dominic instead.
“Go home, right now!” Mal had ordered Elijah off his own premises once he could get a word in edgeways. Elijah could curse for New Zealand if he wanted to, and win hands down.
“Fucking bastarding idiots… twats… morons…dickheads…. God alfuckingmighty… Do they think I have nothing better to do?… The shitfaced cunt lickers!”
“Elijah!” Even Mal turned red at that profanity. “Go home… now! Go to Dominic. He’ll be wondering where you are!”
Elijah let out some sort of animal grunt/growl, and then picked up his holdall and left the shop without looking back.
Mal looked over to a customer who was at the far end of the shop and prayed that he was hard-of-hearing.
Once home, Elijah parked the car, slammed the door and hurried into the house. He raced upstairs and into the bedroom, and saw that Dominic was already up.
“Aww…fuck.” Elijah threw his bag on the bed, and went looking for Dominic. He found him in the bathroom, completely naked and towel drying his hair.
“Hey, Lij, there you are!” Dominic grinned into the mirror at Elijah’s reflection. “Where did you go?”
“Nowhere…I mean, work… Sorry, Dom.”
“Sorry?” Dominic turned to face Elijah. “Sorry for what?”
“For going out this morning.” Elijah looked crestfallen. “For leaving you alone, I know we don’t have much time…”
“Come here.” Dominic tugged Elijah’s tie, and drew him into his arms. “For the next hour, let’s not think about that, ok?”
Elijah nodded.
“I just want to think about you, and this.” Dominic placed a soft kiss on Elijah’s lips. “Hmmmm… thinking about this keeps me sane, you know…?” Dominic smiled at Elijah, and then took his hand and led him into the bedroom.
“When I’m stuck out there, all I have are my memories of touching you, feeling you… kissing you. Making love to you. My memory bank is pretty full, you know?” Dominic unknotted Elijah’s tie and pulled it free from his collar, he then began unbuttoning his shirt.
Elijah remained silent as he let Dominic undress him. He watched Dominic’s eyes as he spoke to him, and could read the pain behind the expression. Outwardly Dominic was portraying an air of calmness, inwardly Elijah knew he was counting the seconds before he had to leave him behind again.
Elijah cupped Dominic’s chin and then kissed him, silencing him. “No more words, Dommie,” he whispered. “Just make love to me.”
Dominic stepped backwards and stood still. His lips were pressed tightly together fighting down a rising wave of emotion.
Elijah went to him and kissed him again, wanting to take away his pain.
“Make love to me, Dommie…” Elijah whispered as he removed his last item of clothing. He took hold of Dominic’s hands and kissed each one in turn, before pushing Dominic gently backwards until he could go no further and sat down on the bed.
Elijah climbed onto the bed and pulled Dominic on top of him and they began kissing passionately, savouring each other, and stroking one another’s cocks to full hardness.
“Oh… Lij…” Dominic sat up spreading Elijah’s thighs wide before kneeling in between them again. Elijah lifted his legs high and placed them over Dominic’s shoulders, pushing his buttocks hard against Dominic’s rigid cock.
Dominic groaned. He wet his fingers before slipping them inside Elijah. He massaged and twisted them until he felt Elijah’s ring of muscle begin to relax. Then using the ever-present bedside lubricant, Dominic coated his cock with it, covering its entire length, before smearing plenty of the liquid between Elijah’s buttocks and deep inside his hole.
Elijah never took his eyes off Dominic the whole time. Dominic wasn’t smiling down at him like he usually did during their love making. Instead his expression was serious.
“You alright, Dom?” Elijah reached out and ran his fingers along Dominic’s arm.”
Dominic blinked as if coming out of a trance.
“Dommie?”
“I’m ok, baby. You know… I’m exactly where I want to be … and in a few hours I’ll be gone. So I’m taking you all in. The feel of you, the smell of you… how you look right now, the sounds you’re making, the way your body is reacting to my touch. I’m storing it all up here.” Dominic tapped his head. “So I can take it away with me and look at it over and over again.”
Elijah bit his bottom lip and nodded.
“God, Lij. Sorry to be so fucking maudlin… I just need something to hold onto, because leaving you… ”
“Dom…it’s ok…” Elijah took Dominic’s hand and guided it towards his cock. “Stroke me, Dommie,” Elijah said as he placed his cock in Dominic’s hand. “Stroke me, and… and fuck me…”
Dominic nodded, his face finally softening.
Elijah drew himself upwards a little more giving Dominic easier access, and then Dominic positioned his cock at Elijah’s tight opening, and pushed himself inside ever so slowly, watching Elijah eyes close and mouth open in a silent gasp, as he did so.
As Dominic entered Elijah and buried himself deeply inside his lover, he wanted to cry from the beauty of it all. He knew his emotions were running high and that he could lose control of them at any moment, so he just concentrated on the man beneath him. He rocked in and out of Elijah slowly and rhythmically, stroking Elijah’s cock in complete unison.
Their eyes didn’t leave each other apart from closing now and then from the pure pleasure each was receiving. Elijah came before Dominic, his body arching upwards drawing Dominic further inside him than could ever be thought possible. This led to Dominic increasing the pace and his gentle actions intensified. He gripped Elijah’s thighs and began thrusting, slowly at first, and then faster, until he could hold back no longer. Dominic’s orgasm came rushing through him, causing him to cry out loud. He pressed his face into Elijah’s leg trying to stifle his cry, but the sensations that tore through him were so overwhelming that he had to give in and just let them take him.
Elijah was waiting with open arms when Dominic finally came back down to earth, and enfolded Dominic within them when he lay beside him. They didn’t say anything, but Elijah felt Dominic’s body gradually curl up into a tight ball. Elijah wrapped himself around him, knowing that Dominic was probably tearing apart inside. Elijah glanced at his watch. Time was now their enemy.
Elijah went to get up, thinking that Dominic had fallen asleep, but as he tried to leave the bed Dominic grasped his wrist and pulled him back down.
“Don’t go, Lij.”
“I’m going to get us something to eat.” Elijah looked down at Dominic’s tired face. “You must be starving… I know I am.”
Dominic shook his head. “I’m not hungry.”
“You need to eat something, Dom. Come on… get up, we can sit in the garden. Open a bottle of wine. I can cook us some pasta.”
Dominic still held Elijah’s wrist. He twisted it slightly so that he could check the time on Elijah’s watch; he had six hours left. He let Elijah go and stared up at the ceiling.
“I know, Dom,” was all Elijah could say as he headed for the shower.
Dominic barely touched his food. He felt sick at the thought of getting back on that plane and returning to Morocco. This surprise trip home to see Elijah had been what kept him going through the weeks leading up to it, and now he had to leave him again.
“Talk to me, Dom.” Elijah sipped his wine. “You’ve been so quiet. You’ve come home to see me, and you have barely said a word.”
Dominic swallowed hard. He swirled the red wine around his glass, not daring to drink on such an empty stomach. They were both sitting on the grass under the apple tree.
“It’s not so long now, Dom.” Elijah didn’t want to bring it up, but he knew it was all Dominic was thinking about. “Just a few more weeks, then it’ll be Christmas, and you’ll be home, and I’ll be pissing you off again. Things will be completely back to normal before long, you’ll see.”
Dominic looked at Elijah. ‘Mister no-fuss-you-know-exactly-where-you-are-with- him-takes-what-life-throws-at-him-deals-with-it-gets-on-with-it-lives-life-to-the- full-because-life-is-for-living-gorgeous-wonderful-so-fucking-beautiful Elijah.’
Dominic suddenly felt ashamed of how he was feeling, but he knew he couldn’t help it. The weeks he had endured when he thought Elijah would die had taken a heavy toll on him, and even two years later, he could recall every last minute detail of Elijah’s struggle to survive. Elijah however, had moved on, and barely ever thought about it. But then Elijah had not been in his shoes living through the heartache and worry. Through the long sleepless nights of their present enforced separation, Dominic had convinced himself that something would happen to Elijah while he was away, and he wouldn’t be there for him. And what if he lost him, this time? For good?
“Dom…?” Elijah’s voice broke into Dominic’s thoughts. “Dom… I’ve missed you. Please talk to me, baby.” Elijah had moved in closer to Dominic and removed the wine glass from his hand, placing it on the grass. “How’s it been? Truthfully? What exactly are you doing out there? And how did you talk Pete into letting you have time off?”
“I don’t think Pete could stand my hang-dog face a moment longer.” Dominic stared at the bow of the tree. Elijah couldn’t help smiling.
“ ‘For fuck sake, Dom,’ Pete said, and you know Pete hardly ever swears. ‘For fuck sake, Dom’, he said. ‘Go… fly home, get it out of your fucking system, and then come back here like you mean it.’ ”
“Ouch!” Elijah frowned. “Did Pete really say that?”
“Well, no.” Dominic shook his head. “But translated I’m sure that’s what he meant.” Dominic looked at Elijah. “Christ, Lij. I’ve missed you so much. I couldn’t think of anything else but seeing you again. I hated leaving you behind. This separation is fucking killing me.”
Elijah nodded and then began picking at the grass. “You know, you don’t have to worry so much about me, Dom.”
“What if you got sick again, Elijah? Here on your own? Who could help you? I couldn’t help you, being so fucking far away.”
“Dom…” Elijah could see where this was going, he knew Dominic too well. He knew he had to try and pick his words carefully. “I’m not going to get sick again.”
“You don’t know that, Lij. The doctor said there is a small chance…”
“No, he didn’t!” Elijah interrupted. “He didn’t say anything like that, Dom, and you know it! You are distorting things… just like you always used to. You’re letting your imagination get the better of you. You’ll be the one ending up ill, not me. I’ve never been fucking healthier. Fucking look at me.” Elijah stood up and held his arms out wide. “See… perfect!” He smiled down at Dominic who was staring up at him.
“Well…” Elijah glanced at the scars on his left hand and arm. “A bit weathered on the outside, maybe, but on the inside I bet I’m the fittest person on this island. Want a twirl?”
Dominic couldn’t help smiling. Elijah grinned back at him as he pirouetted on the spot. He lost his balance and ended up on his hands and knees with his backside high in the air.
Dominic laughed out loud at Elijah’s antics.
“Now I know why mom never sent me to ballet lessons.” Elijah turned to look at Dominic through his mop of hair and grinned at him. It warmed his heart to see Dominic smiling back at him.
Elijah crawled back to Dominic’s side and kissed him tenderly. “See… nothing to worry about… well apart from the grass stains on my knees.” Elijah looked at his sweatpants. “Grass is a fucking bugger to get out, you know?”
Dominic laughed out loud again. “Oh, Lijah…” he took Elijah in his arms and kissed him again. “What would I ever do without you?”
“Worry a lot less?” Elijah looked at Dominic as innocently as he could, realising that was totally the wrong thing to say. But Dominic just smiled and nodded.
“I’m so glad I came home, Lij. You’ve been my breath of fresh air.” They both lay down on the grass, looking up at the clear blue summer sky. Dominic held Elijah’s hand before continuing. “And I know I worry too much. I can’t help it, I really can’t. I do try, but you are the most important thing in my life, Lij, and all I want to do is be with you. Is that such a bad thing, baby?” Dominic twisted his head to look at his lover. “Am I too suffocating? I must be. I’d hate to be you, with me smothering you all the time.”
“Hey, I like being smothered, especially by your mouth.”
Dominic couldn’t help smiling again. He turned on his side to face Elijah, and then weaved his fingers through Elijah’s hair spreading it over the warm grass. He looked at the man he loved, so relaxed lying beside him. And then a thought suddenly struck him; a bolt of reasoning from out of the blue.
Elijah was his, he was married to him and wasn’t he the luckiest man in the whole fucking world to have that? So why the fuck was he worrying all the time? Yes, Elijah almost died, but he didn’t, did he? Here he was now, lying beside him, strong, and healthy, and more beautiful than any words can describe, and in the prime of his life, too. Shouldn’t he be celebrating that fact, and not fucking mourning it!? Jesus…Dominic could hardly believe himself at times.
“What?” Elijah turned his head to look at Dominic who was staring at him and grinning from ear to ear.
“Nothing…” Dominic replied. “I just like looking at you.”
“You’re nuts.”
Dominic chuckled. “Nuts about you, Lij, that’s my main problem.”
Elijah rolled onto his side so that he was face to face with Dominic. “I can live with that problem, Dom. No problem living with that problem, because it’s not a problem.”
Dominic laughed and shook his head. “I’m so glad you aren’t complicated, Lij Monaghan. I do my head in enough for both of us.” Dominic sighed. “I just wish I didn’t have to go…”
“Suck my cock, Dom.”
“What?” Dominic blinked.
“Suck it… I’m hard for you.”
Dominic’s eyes travelled down the length of Elijah’s body towards his groin, and saw that Elijah had lowered his sweatpants and freed his cock.
“Jesus Christ, Elijah.” Dominic felt his own groin stir at the sight of this delectable offering.
“Come on, then.” Elijah held his cock. “It’s all yours.”
Dominic groaned as he got onto all fours, and without any hesitation he dipped his head and sucked Elijah into his mouth.
*
While Dominic took a shower, Elijah stood and stared the solitary travel bag sitting on the bed, packed and ready to travel half way around the world again.
“I wonder…” Elijah spoke quietly to himself. He looked at his watch; it was two hours before Dominic had to check in, and four hours before his flight. Elijah picked up Dominic’s flight tickets and hurried downstairs.
Mal picked up the phone on the first ring.
“I knew you would still be at the shop, Mal. We close at five, not six.” Elijah sat on the sofa with the phone pinned to his ear as he flicked through the flight paperwork.
“Good evening, Elijah,” Mal answered. “I take it you had a good day?”
“Fantastic day, Mal. Now listen… I know this is a lot to ask and at such short notice, but…”
“You want to go to Morocco with Dominic?”
Elijah fell silent for a moment. Mal could read him like a book.
“Kind of…”
“Kind of?”
“Well yes, if I can get a flight. But I would need you to cover for me. I’m really putting you on the spot, Mal. But I think Dom needs this. I know I definitely need it. It could be five weeks before I see him again.”
“Elijah… I half expected this, and I have already changed my plans for the next week.”
“You have?”
“So there is no problem, take as long as you like.”
“And, Joe?”
“Joe loves helping here, Elijah. Us old codgers will run your shop like a well-oiled machine.”
Elijah grinned. “I really don’t know what I would ever do without you, Mal. Now all I need to do is try and organize these flights.”
“I would expect Dominic is more than pleased that you are accompanying him back to Morocco?”
“He doesn’t know yet, Mal.”
“Very good…” Elijah could tell that Mal was smiling. “Well, Elijah, I shall leave you to get on with things. Don’t worry about your shop; after all I’ve looked after it before. Have a wonderful time, and pass on my regards to Dominic.”
“I will. Bye, Mal.” Elijah hung up.
Now his mind started racing. He found the airport phone number on Dominic’s tickets and began dialling.
Dominic towelled off and slipped on his clean clothes. No doubt he would look like a bag of shit when he stepped off the plane in Morocco, but who cares? There wouldn’t be anyone there waiting for him, so it didn’t matter.
“No!… Stop it! I’m not going there…” Dominic spoke out loud to himself. “I’m not going to get down about any of this. It’s only five fucking weeks! Thirty five days… not long, not long at all.”
And thirty five long lonely nights.
Dominic sighed heavily and sat down on the bed.
“Dom!.. Dom!”
Dominic looked up at the sound of Elijah’s voice as he pounded up the stairs. He got to his feet.
“Dom!” Elijah raced into the room and flung open the wardrobe doors. He hauled out a small suitcase.
“Lij?” Dominic scratched his head, wondering if Elijah was losing the plot.
“I’m coming with you! I managed to book a seat. Not in first class though. Would you mind going steerage with me for the duration of the flight?”
“Lij? What? Slow down. Steerage? What are you talking about?”
“Morocco… I’m going back with you… now… tonight.”
“What?” Dominic’s perplexed expression made Elijah laugh.
“I’m going back…with you, Dom. I know you’ll be busy, but we’ll have the evenings together, won’t we? You don’t have any night shoots planned for the next few days, do you? Ah well, if you do, we can fuck during the day.”
“Lij… Lijah. Stop.” Dominic grabbed Elijah’s hands and held them tightly in front of him. “Now, slowly. Did you say you’re flying back with me?”
Elijah nodded vigorously.
“Bloody hell, Lij. That is fucking fantastic! I don’t know what to say. My God! Now you have me all a-fluster.”
Elijah grinned.
“Same flight?”
Elijah nodded.
“And…. and how long? When do you fly back?”
“I’ll have five days with you… I have to get back, ‘cause of Mal… and…”
Elijah’s words were cut off as Dominic’s mouth pressed over his own, and they kissed long and hard. When they pulled apart, they were both a little breathless. They looked at each other, and then suddenly Elijah sprang to life again.
“Passport! Where do we keep our passports, Dom?”
Dominic laughed out loud. “Where we always keep them, Lij. Downstairs in the kitchen drawer.”
“Oh, yeah…. be right back!” Elijah flew out of the room.
Dominic sat down on the bed again and tried to take it all in. I’ll wake up in a minute, he thought, and I’ll find that it’s all a dream, and that I’m not really here at all.
“Christ, Dom!” Elijah yelled at Dominic as he ran past him to the wardrobe again. “Help me pack. I ordered a taxi and it’ll be here any minute, it’s in the area.”
Dominic stood up grinning. “Come here, you!” He grabbed Elijah and pulled him into his arms.
“I fucking love you, my Lijah. You know that, don’t you? I fucking love you so fucking much.”
Elijah felt his legs weaken at the intensity of Dominic’s kiss.
“This is the best fucking anniversary ever!” Dominic kissed Elijah again.
Then the doorbell rang spurring them both into action, and within five minutes Elijah was locking the front door behind him, and joining Dominic in the taxi ride to the airport.

*
