March was a hard month for Elijah. He rarely saw Viggo, and when he did it was generally just a quick cup of coffee and conversation before he went for four thirty call and after Viggo returned from night shoots, or a quick dinner when he was done and Viggo was about to go to his call. More often than not, with the sun setting earlier and rising later, their calls would overlap so that they wouldn’t see each other at all. Shooting in Hobbiton was fun and relatively easy work, despite having to use a lot of scale effects, but he missed having his schedule match with Viggo’s. Sydney, at least, was a welcome break.

“Dude, Elijah, look! It’s Samuel L. Jackson, in the freaking flesh!” Sean exclaimed, pointing and staring and looking generally stupid. Elijah smiled indulgently, especially at Sean’s trademark use of “freaking” which had come from trying not to curse around Ali.

“Yeah, that’s pretty cool. Who’s that kid?”

“Hayden Christensen,” Billy supplied. “He’s Anakin Skywalker.”

“Isn’t Anakin like, five?” Elijah asked with a frown.

“Only in the first movie,” Dom explained knowingly. “What I want to know is, where’s Natalie Portman?”

Elijah grinned as Orlando sidled up next to him, whispering in his ear, “You want to be the one to tell Daisy about this, or should I?”

The Star Wars visit was fun, and Elijah enjoyed entertaining his inner nerd, but on the plane ride back to New Zealand he started getting mopey again, realising that they were going “home” and that Viggo wouldn’t be there to greet him.

“Hey Lij, you all right? I thought you were doing better,” Orlando commented with concern, and Elijah smiled at the Elf next to him.

“I’m fine, Orli. I just miss Vig, that’s all. I wish he had been able to come with us.”

“Oh, I’m sorry mate. I know he wanted to, it’s just they needed him for more shots than me…”

“Yeah, I know. The show must go on,” Elijah replied with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

“Seriously though, Elijah. He’ll be done in May, and then you’ll be back to shagging like bunnies every time you get a chance and sickening the lot of us.”

Elijah grinned, but his smile faded as he considered Orlando’s words. “Do you mean it? I mean does seeing us together annoy you?”

Orlando looked surprised for a moment, then began retracting quite quickly. “No no no, definitely not, Lij! Not at all! I’m happy for the both of you… I’m sorry if I kind of make fun a lot, but it’s just my nature. I really do think you’re good for each other.”

Elijah smiled and nodded. “Thanks, Orli. I guess it just feels the world’s against us sometimes.”

Orli nodded and thought about it, leaning back in his seat. “Anyone specific?”

“Well, my brother for one. We never really resolved that before I left. Dom, at first, but I guess he’s fine now that he’s got Daisy. Karl…”

“…just wants a piece of your arse,” Orli finished with a grin. “But to be fair, he’s backed off, and now he’s not even needed on set till May.”

“True. And well, Billy had a talk with me about how he thinks Viggo and I are too dependent, or protective, or something. I talked to Vig about it, and he agreed not to be so protective of me, and to give me more time with everyone instead of being alone all the time, but I miss him. I miss his protectiveness.”

“Well, like I said, night shoots are just till May. And Vig’s got some shots with Liv at the end of the month in Rivendell, plus there’s the break. Three whole weeks, it’s a long time to be together. Have you made plans yet?”

“No,” Elijah replied, frowning slightly. “I don’t think he’s going home or anything, but he hasn’t told me much.”

“Well maybe he’s planning something. Look on the bright side!”

“I guess…” Elijah still felt unsettled, but let it drop. There would be time to sort this out later, when the stress of filming wasn’t so immediate.

Very nice and very natural, as always.
