Chapter Two
-I like the way you act so surprise-
The look on the young man’s face was almost comical. He sat back, the surprise written all over his face. His mouth shut quickly, covering his teeth, his irises showing again in his eyes. Jack watched him go from defiance to alarm all in one moment. Sipping his wine Jack waited for the boy to collect himself enough to ask the questions Jack knew would be plaguing him.
“You’ve met a Vampire before?” came the gentle gasp, making Jack smile.
“Only one, other then yourself Red and he has become a good friend.” Jack smiled fondly. “I still try to see him, though it has been a few years since I was last down his way.” Jack watched him over the glass, “how did you think I could break this curse? Even I have never heard of a Vampire becoming a mortal again.”
“It was just a wish,” Red said quietly. Again, the wistful look filled the Vampire’s eyes. “One that seems to be a constant disappointment. Forgive me, I’ve ruined your night.”
Watching Red begin to move, Jack stood with the Vampire. “You’re not hungry?”
Jack had never seen someone get so quiet. His whole body stiffened, repulsed by the very suggestion. Jack couldn’t help but be a little insulted by the reaction.
“I’ve been told, Red, that my blood is quite nice, though I’m sure you’d rather some pretty little virgin to feast on.”
Red flinched. “It’s not that,” the young Vampire assured him, “I do not feed from mortals at all.”
Jack’s eyebrows rose. “Then what do you feed on?”
“Anything I can get a hold of,” Red confessed. “Mice, rats, pigeons, a cat or a dog if I am lucky.”
Jack couldn’t believe it. His Vampire friend had not reveled everything, but there were some things he had been instant on. The need to feed every few days was one of them. Jack had even been a donor once in a while. But that was just on a human, without draining one completely. The boy must be feeding hourly on the smaller creatures that filled his diet. And it would certainly explain his pale completion.
“Well, not tonight,” Jack said firmly. “My blood is all yours.”
Again, those eyes were quiet furious, heated in the anger that filled them. Jack felt a spike run through him, wakening desires long since buried. Red, however, had no interest in Jack’s desires and did not seem keen in Jack’s offer. Being honest, which Jack rarely was, Red seemed genuinely angry and disgusted by the idea.
“You are pushing your luck, Captain. I will not succumb to these instincts. I will try to remain mortal in at least this way. Thank you for your company Captain, it has been a rare delight.”
“Oh come now, Red,” Jack caught the boy’s wrist. He must be starving, Jack thought, tugging quickly at his own scarf. “Give into the demon a little. We all have something we feel a little guilty about.”
Jack barely had a second to think before his feet were out from under him, his back landing heavily on their table. His wine glass broke in half beneath the sudden weight against it. The vampire was on top of him, curls half obscuring his vision, teeth out once more. There was barely a lull in the conversation around them.
“is this what you want?” Red hissed furiously, “me too loose control? Pin you down like some wild animal, feed from you, take all I could want?”
With his free hand Jack reached up, grabbing the end of his broken cup, using it to press down against the flesh of his neck. He watched as Red’s eyes widened at the sudden whiff of Jack’s blood. Watched his control splinter.
“By the sweet seas, yes Red. That’s exactly what I want.” Jack could see the boy shatter, everything slipping away. “Don’t fight who you are, Red. Take me back to my ship and drink your fill.”
“I might kill you.”
“Of course,” Jack smiled, “but you’ll certainly be the sweetest company I’ve had in a long while, and that makes it worth it. Coming?” Jack slipped out from beneath the boy, walking away and toward the door. He was sure Red would follow him. The tempting promise of blood had broken older, stronger Vampires. Blood freely given was a rare gift, and one Jack had yet to be knocked back.
The biting cool of the night made Jack pulled his coat a little closer as he ambled toward the dock, humming gently. He waited just a moment, hearing the door open and close behind him. Jack smiled to himself.
This night was clear, Jack kept a slow pace, but there were no footsteps behind him. Still Jack was sure Red was following along behind him. It gave him a few moments to mule over Red’s admission. His little Vampire longed to be rid of the curse that, though made him immortal, forced him into the darkness. To drink blood to survive. Jack didn’t know the details, but he had never heard of a Vampire that wanted to be mortal. Of course, Jack conceded to himself, the Vampire he knew was old and eccentric and had probably had a long time to come to peace with his curse. Red was a lot younger, Jack was certain.
His feet led him without conscious thought to the Pearl. He waved up to Anna Maria, who swung down from the ropes above to greet him as he boarded.
“Quiet night?” Jack asked the woman, a friend, like many, that Jack owed a favour or two. Yet she was quiet happy, Jack had found, to stay aboard, even though Jack had finally acquired the ability to buy the boat he owed her. Anna Maria enjoyed the company of the crew and wanted, to Jack’s delight, to try and keep their Captain out of as much trouble as possible.
“It has been,” she nodded, “who’s your friend?”
Jack turned to find red halfway up the plank, watching the exchange between the two pirates cautiously. Jack grinned down at him, gold teeth flashing.
“This is Red, he’s going to keep me company tonight.”
Anna Maria snorted as Red took a moment to find his sea legs. “Well, we set sail first thin in the morning, a hangover is no excuse.” She said firmly, glaring at both of them. “Make sure he doesn’t drink too much.”
“I will,” Red agreed, smile dancing over his features. “I promise he wont be allowed to drink too much.”
Jack hid a chortle, he would not be the one who was drinking. It was Red who would have to be careful how much he drank, Jack had been told his blood could be quiet potent. “Come on Red, I’ll show you to my rooms.”
Rooms was really only one small space. When Barbossa had the Pearl he had taken most of the rooms for himself, leaving very little for the rest of the crew to share. Jack had taken only one, admittedly big, room to himself, with shutters that could be opened when on calm seas. Jack opened them as Red stood in the doorway.
“You can take a seat, Red, I won’t bite.” Red smiled a little at that, perching nervously on the edge of the bed.
“How did you know I’d follow you?”
“Instinct.” Jack moved away from the windows and further into the room, “you looked hungry, if you knew what to look for.”
“I haven’t fed from a person since I first turned,” red watched Jack move, eyes darkening, looking decidedly nervous, “not since-“
“Shh,” Jack pressed his finger against Red’s lips as he moved before him. “You don’t owe me anything Red, least of all explanations.” The Vampire watched him closely as Jack took a seat beside him. “Just trust, all right, even if me being a pirate makes it a little difficult. You must know that all I mean is good intentions.”
There was a slow nod, “I can’t smell any deceit on you. For a pirate your word is unbelievably solid. You are going to let me drink from you.”
Jack nodded, shucking his jacket. He knew from experience what a Vampire feeding could be like and intended to be comfortable as possible this time around. His scarf came the rest of the way off and Red’s eye dilated again at the sight of the now dried wound on Jack’s neck.
“I’ve never done this before,” Red whispered, eyes focused on Jack’s neck. “I mean, no one’s ever offered, I,” a pause, a swallow, Jack could see him fighting with his demons. “I don’t want to hurt you.”
“It will take a lot to hurt me, son.” Jack grinned. “Just if you do happen to drink me dry, use the shutters to get out, Anna Maria will be none to pleased to see you.”
“I wont,” Red said softly, moving with Jack as the pirate eased himself onto the covers. “I wont drain you.’
The promise was enough for the Pirate Captain, feeling the Vampire’s breath ghost against his flesh. “I would know your name before you start, Red?”
“Orlando,” the name was whispered against him as the teeth pierced the skin.
