Two Related Drabbles

1. Billy doesn’t think Dom belongs in Hawaii. In Manchester and Glasgow Dom is like a twinkling star at night and the bright hot sun in the day. He glows and sparks and lights up the room. Set against a grey sky, Dom is like a beacon shining with some inner light. He casts a comfortable glow that reaches out and begs you to sit and stay awhile. Hawaii is too bright. Against the tropical sun and the unreal green of the foliage Dom seems diminished. Whenever Bill steps off the plane he shields his eyes and searches for his sunglasses.
2. Billy doesn’t think Dom belongs in Hawaii. Hawaii is too bright and Dom is too fucking determined. Each time Billy sees Dom he notices that Dom is growing brighter. His hair is blonde, his skin tan, his teeth more white. Dom is a fluorescent bulb burning his retinas and making him see spots. A comfortable glow cannot compete with white beaches and orange sun reflecting on ocean. Dom knows this and adapts accordingly. Billy didn’t think Dom belonged in Hawaii…at first. Now he knows that it is he who does not belong. He looks at Dom and wishes for sunglasses.
