Summary: - A first time/filming story with misconceptions/misunderstandings
When the girl came to call him to the set he was far from ready. He smiled “Thank you”, and checked in the mirror that he hadn’t spoiled his make-up, and forced himself out. At least he wasn’t actually filming a scene with Orli, although the Rivendell set wasn’t so vast that they wouldn’t see each other on occasion.
He’d hardly gone twenty steps before someone grabbed his shoulder from behind and spun him round.
“Billy! What’s the matter, man? You nearly knocked me over!”
“What have yeh done to Dom?” demanded Billy.
“Done? I just… he was… what do you mean?”
“He’s in fucking pieces back there!” Billy waved in the direction of their trailer. “He goes to see you to check you’re alright and cheer you up ‘cos you looked so bloody miserable in Feet, and when he comes back he bloody breaks up!”
“Oh fuck! I’m sorry, Bill. He caught me at a bad time. Orli had just been and I was really pissed off, you know?”
“So you took it out on Dom?”
“No! Well, I suppose I did, maybe. Sorry!”
“Nae good apologising to me, Lijah. Tell him!”
“I’m due on set!”
“What’s more important, then? Dom or your professional reputation?”
“What? Oh Billy, don’t you start getting at me, too! Tell you what, you look after him, he’s your boyfriend!”
“He’s what!” Billy snapped out the last word so loudly that Elijah took a step backwards.
“You were… you were together… asleep…!” he stammered. “Last night, when… when I phoned!”
Billy had blushed bright pink. “ Yeh fecking idiot! We were watching a bloody video!” He stabbed his finger at Elijah’s chest. “We fell asleep on the bloody couch!”
“Oh! Billy, I’m…”
“And that is how rumours start, yer daft cunt! And yeh should know all about that by now!”
“Yeah, I do! Sorry Billy! I…”
“Right! Now go and say that to Dom.”
“Ok!” said Elijah, and ran on embarrassed feet towards Dom and Billy’s trailer.
“Daft cunt!” muttered Billy. “As if he’d look at me when you’re there.” He sighed, and went to make excuses for his friends’ absence.
Elijah tapped uncertainly at the door of Billy and Dom’s trailer. How many times had he been made to feel a fool in the last few days? It was getting to be a habit.
He heard a muttered “Yeah!” from inside.
“Dom! It’s me! You in there?”
The word he heard was muffled, but it was rather like “No!” He decided to ignore it and opened the door.
“Hey, Dom! Can I come in?” he asked, climbing up the steps and closing the door behind him.
“Is it too late to say no?” Dom was sitting dejectedly at the small table. He had his script in his hand and he was poking holes in the paper.
“You’ll spoil that, dude.”
“Doesn’t matter. I have nothing to say. I just run over and hug you ‘cos I’m pleased you’re better and you hug me back ‘cos you’re happy to see me. At least that’s the general idea, and I’m sure you’re a good enough actor to make it look real.”
“Oh Dom! I’m sorry! I was in such a foul mood! Orli had just been to see me…”
“I don’t want to know! I have no desire to find out what you and Orli get up to! I made Bill tell me all he knew and I wish I hadn’t. It’s none of my business.”
“But you were trying to help and I shouldn’t have…”
“It doesn’t matter! It’s my fault for being so bloody stupid. I thought I had no chance at all, you know, that you were straight and… and I should just accept being friends and… I did… and then you and Orli – fuck, that hurt! - and… and…he drops you and I’m hoping…then he picks you up again and drops you…” Dom stabbed viciously at the paper, “ and I’m back to hoping… idiot!… but now I know.” He stood up abruptly and Elijah took a step back.
“It’s ok, Lij. You’re quite safe.”
“I know that, Dom. I’m just sorry if I upset you.”
“Lij, it doesn’t matter.”
“But it does! Look, please, I messed up! You know, I even thought you and Billy were…” The curious look on Dom’s face stopped him from making things worse.” Let’s forget it, eh? Hey, you want that hug?” He smiled and opened his arms.
“Sure,” said Dom and stepped into the embrace, but his back was stiff and there was none of the warm comfort there had been in the past.
“Erm… friends again?” Elijah said hesitantly.
“Of course!” Dom broke away and went to the door. “Come on. Let’s get on set before we’re in deep trouble.”
“Right!” nodded Elijah, but as he followed his friend he was suddenly overwhelmed with an inexplicable feeling of loss.
***********
The afternoon wore on and Elijah hugged Dom and Billy over and over again with different angles, timing, lighting. Each time he tried to will the warmth back into Dom,
-Lij, I can’t breathe!-
-Lij, you’re pinching my arm!-
but could not seem to get the result he wanted. When the time came for a break Billy and Sean slipped off together to do what they called ‘investigating’. Elijah took one look at Dom’s closed face and tried to get through.
“Going for a walk, Dom. Wanna come?”
“No, it’s ok, mate. I’m going for some tea.” And he turned and went without another word.
“Right!” sighed Elijah, and wandered up among the trees alone. It took only moments before he was out of sight of the set, the sounds cut off by the foliage, and he leaned back against an oak and pulled out a cigarette. Closing his eyes he tried to relax. His mind drifted back to the night before, trying to work out what he could have done differently. Then into his mind came the image of Orli on his knees in front of him, Orli’s hands cradling his ass, Orli’s tongue running down the line of curls from his navel to…
“Well! That’s a pretty sight!”
Elijah’s eyes fluttered open. To his embarrassment he realised he’d been stroking his hand up and down his groin to accompany his thoughts. Three men surrounded him, three men he vaguely recognised as doing something around the set, although he could not remember quite what that was.
“Excuse me?” he said, trying to be friendly but dismissive. “I want to be on my own, if you don’t mind?”
“You sure?” grinned one of the men.
“Not what we’ve heard!” said another. The third man said nothing, but he looked Elijah up and down in an unnerving way, and then moved much too close.
“Please go away,” said Elijah, trying to speak calmly. He moved away from the third man, but found that this brought him closer to the first, who was still grinning. His mood changed from irritated to annoyed, and he decided that if they wouldn’t go away he would go himself.
But they had closed in on him, and didn’t look like they were after an autograph.
“Let me go, please! I have to get back on set. They… they’ll be looking for me!” He had gone from annoyed to scared in the space of a few seconds, but was working hard on keeping his voice steady.
“Well, aren’t you lucky?” said grinning man. “There’s a problem with one of the cameras. Could be… oh… half an hour before they’ll need you again.”
“And we’ve heard how you love company!” said the second man.
“Twosomes, threesomes, foursomes, just about anything, so we’ve heard!” said Smiler.
“You heard wrong, guys!” Elijah tried for a smile of apology, although it felt very tight and forced. “Sorry to disappoint you, but I really have to…”
The third man pushed him back against the tree, pinning him on that side while Smiler secured his arm on the other. The second man chuckled and reached for the buttons on the hobbit breeches.
“Get your fucking hands off me!” He kicked out but prosthetic feet don’t do a great deal of damage. “Help! Let me g…” A rather dirty hand was forced over his mouth, reducing his cries to grunts.
The second man had managed to undo the buttons, despite Elijah’s struggles.
“Let’s have a look shall we?” he said, and was just reaching inside when footsteps were heard coming down the hill towards them. The men froze and turned their heads to the sound.
“Excuse me,” said Viggo. “Don’t let me spoil your fun.” He stared straight at Elijah and turned to take another path. ‘Oh fuck!’ thought Elijah. ‘He thinks I’m willing.’
He wriggled desperately until his mouth was free and shouted, “No, Viggo! Help me, please!” They tried to gag him again but he bit down on a finger until he was released. “I don’t want this! Please!”
Viggo stopped and came back to the group.
“Perhaps, gentlemen,” he said quietly, “you should let him go?”
The third man had already gone, removing himself as soon as Viggo turned back. The others mumbled “Sorry! Just a bit of fun!” and “Didn’t mean any harm, you know”, and quickly made their escape.
“Thank you, Viggo! Thank you!” Elijah leaned back against the tree and tried to breathe deeply, tried to steady himself. He began to fasten the buttons on his breeches and found his fingers hard to control.
“I thought… I thought for a minute you were going to leave me with them.” Breathe in, breathe out. “I was fucking scared ,man! Those bastards… oh, fuck!” The buttons were proving awkward.. Keep breathing slowly, slowly.
“Do you want to report them?” Viggo had folded his arms and was looking at Elijah thoughtfully. “You could certainly get them off the set.”
“No, no! I would have to explain… it would cause more fuss…add to the shitty talk about me.” He dropped his hands. “Some of which you believe, don’t you? I know you do.”
“Well,” Viggo shrugged and spread his hands, “it seems that…”
“Seems? You’re not sure but you want to think the worst, that it? That situation you told Orli about, - it happened four years ago, man! You made me sound like a stalker, or something, having to be warned off some poor innocent man. It wasn’t like that!”
“Then how was it?”
“I can’t say. I can’t explain!”
“Right.” Viggo began to turn away.
“No! You don’t understand. I can’t explain! I’m not allowed. I signed a paper to say I would say nothing.”
“Really? And so what happens if you tell?”
“What? I don’t know! They… they sue me, they… they take me to court… maybe I get sent to prison…I don’t know!”
“Well, I don’t know the details…”
“No, you don’t. But that didn’t stop you telling Orli, did it?”
“True, I…”
“Nobody knows the details but me! ‘Cos nobody knows my side of it! No one!”
“Hey!” Viggo took hold of Elijah’s shoulders. “You’re shaking. Try and calm down.”
“Right! Ok!” Elijah went back to the deep breathing, in and out. “I’m alright. Let go of me, please.”
Viggo took his hands away and seemed uncertain what to do next.
“You should go and get a drink, Lijah. And…”
“And?”
“I’ll think about this. Believe me, I have nothing against you. My main aim was to protect Orlando.”
“What about me? Orli’s older than me!”
“Orli hasn’t been around as much as you. I reckoned you were better able to look after your self.”
“But that’s not fair!”
“Maybe.” Viggo sighed. “But… if I don’t know everything about you, you don’t know everything about Orlando. He went through a bad time just before he came here, trying to hold onto a relationship that was going nowhere. I reckoned you were the last thing he needed.”
“Thanks! Who gave you the right to make decisions for him?”
“Well, as I said, I’ll think about it. If I’ve been unfair… well I’ll see.”
“R… right.”
“Ok?”
“Yeah. I suppose so.”
Viggo put his arm supportively around Elijah’s shoulders.
“Come on. Let’s go back.” And he led him back down to the set.
*******
Dom was sitting alone at a table, swirling a half-empty cup around until it spilt, and then sprinkling sugar over the drops of liquid.
He stared at Elijah as Viggo sat him down opposite and went to get him a cup of coffee.
“Lijah…?” Dom started to ask, but stopped as soon as Viggo returned.
“Here you are.” Viggo put a steaming cup in front of Elijah. “Will you be ok? I have something I need to do.”
“Sure, Vig, fine. I’m fine,” he muttered.
“Lijah…?”
At that moment Billy and Sean came rushing into the tent, almost knocking Viggo over as they came.
“Hey!” said Sean. “We got a lead!!
“But he’s gone and left the set! Security chappie jest told us. Bloody nuisance!” added Billy
“Lead?” asked Viggo.
“Yeah,” answered Sean. “We’ve been trying to track down the bastards who’ve been spreading gossip about Lij, you know?”
“Bloody hard ta dae! Nobody wants to talk ‘cos they think they’re in trouble.”
“But we got a definite lead….”
“And now he’s gone!” finished Billy.
“What did he look like?” asked Viggo.
“Skinny guy, tall, blonde hair…” said Sean.
“Wears a red jacket a lot,” added Billy.
Elijah gasped and Viggo glanced at him. It was perfect description of the third man. The one who’d grabbed Elijah first and taken off as soon as Viggo turned back.
“I think I might have another couple of leads for you,” said Viggo. “We’ll discuss it in the lunch break, yes? Must go!”
“What!” yelled Billy. “ Come back here!” and he and Sean rushed after Viggo, whose striding figure was already disappearing into the distance.
“Well?” asked Dom. “Are you going to tell me what happened?”
“You know, don’t you, Dom? Billy and Sean have been…”
“Not that! What happened with you and Viggo?”
“Oh, I see! Nothing, man, nothing at all. We were just…you know…walking.”
“I see.” Dom carefully scraped all his heaps of damp sugar off the table into his cup, put the cup down, pushed his chair back, and stood up. He placed the chair back under the seat, making sure it was straight, and then leant for a moment on the chair back.
“Lij, I think Viggo should have told you that you have leaves and things stuck to your wig, and dust on the back of your coat. I think it would have been considerate of him to have dusted you down afterwards, don’t you?”
Elijah reached up and found the bits of the oak tree that had become attached while he tried to wriggle free of his attackers.
“Oh fuck! Dom, I gotta tell you…”
“That nothing happened. I know. You just said. See you later.”
“Dom! You can’t think…?” But Dom was already gone.
“Oh shit!” muttered Elijah. “This is getting too much!” He took a few gulps of his cooling coffee and stood up. “ Dom! Wait for me! Please!”
