The Trial of the Sun- Chapter Three
Title: - The Trial of the Sun
Chapter: - Three
Author: - Valiantfan
Pairing: - Orlando/Dominic/Elijah
Rating: - NC17 eventually
Warnings: - None.
Disclaimer: - Total fiction
Summary: - An AU fantasy. Orlando is a Gypsy outsider, Dominic is a 'pure blood' aristocrat,(and a hermaphrodite) and Elijah is an albino (temporarily) and the spanner in the works! I have taken liberties with spellings, just for effect, but I’m sure you’ll recognise everyone.
When Orlahndo asked if he could kiss me, I did not say no. I wanted, very much, to say yes, but I was afraid, afraid for both of us. So, I took the cowardly way out and did not move or speak. Seeing no resistance he moved his face closer until his lips touched mine.
The strength of my reaction startled me. I had kissed girls before, I had kissed Ellija too – or rather he had kissed me, since it was usually his idea, - but I had never felt like this. It was a shock that passed right through my body, growing in tingling intensity as it went lower. It was as if I was burning up and it scared me. Orlahndo seemed to sense this, and he reached an arm around my waist and pulled me closer, so that our mouths were pressed together. His lips parted slightly and the tip of his tongue ran across my own lips, as if seeking entrance.
“No! N..no!” I gasped, pushing him away and jumping to my feet. My face was hot and my heart was pounding. “Someone might see!”
“No one will see.” He gestured at the blank windows which surrounded us.
I knew it was true. The courtyard had once been part of a family home, built, as was the fashion among my people, on three floors. Shops and businesses occupied the ground floor, with living quarters on the other floors and a private courtyard. My mother’s house was designed in a similar way, yet on three sides only, the fourth side extending to a long walled garden. But this was the old part of the city and had been built on four sides with a narrow entrance. It had once had a gate, but that was long gone, and the upstairs rooms now seemed to be used as storage for the businesses at the front. The windows were dusty and lifeless.
“But…but if anyone did see…” I was floundering then, trying to justify my over-reaction.
“They would have me thrown into prison, I expect.” His face was calm, but I sensed that he found me amusing.
“They might… they might kill you!”
“Surely not?” He was definitely smiling now. “That would be an extreme reaction, even for your Keepers. Now, if you were a girl – I suppose that would be different. A threat to the precious pure-blood!”
He could not have said a worse thing. It reminded me I was a freak, and that if he knew my secret he would never want to touch me again.
“What if I were a girl?” I asked.

The doctor returned and spoke in private to my father and mother. I can imagine my father’s face during this discussion; he would have been pink with embarrassment and desperate to leave. I loved him very much, but he could never speak of feelings or sexual matters in any comfort. He played with me, he read to me, he took me on ‘expeditions’ –as he referred to our long walks -, but nothing very personal was ever discussed.
“Do you love my mother?” I asked him once. I had been trying to see my cool, detached mama as a lover and had found it impossible.
“W... what?” he had stammered, and then, “She is my wife!” as if that answered everything, and perhaps for him it did.
When the time came that my mother dispatched us into the garden so he could have a ‘talk’ with me about ‘babies’ he was completely tongue-tied. Fortunately for him Ellija’s father was quite different, and had given him clear details, so that I could assure him that I already knew.
Sadly, this information had been very much from a man’s point of view and had not mentioned the stomach-ache and bleeding from which I was now suffering. (Hennara had given me some things called ‘pads’, which were certainly more convenient than a sheet, but they did not ease the pain.)
When the doctor went my mother came and sat by my bed.
“Nikky, dear,” she said, “Doctor Guy has been to see us.”
“Yes, yes!” I nodded, irritated. Did she really think I was unaware of his visit?
“My dear…” she paused again, making me very fearful. “Doctor Guy has…”
“Mother!”
“Nikky, it seems you have three possible courses of action.” She paused yet again. “You need to make a choice.”

“If you were a girl?” Orlahndo grinned and leaned back against the door, his hands behind his head. “Well now, if you were a girl you wouldn’t be here.”
“You mean, you don’t like…”
“If you were a girl, - a well-brought-up pure-blood girl, - you would never have followed a strange gypsy down a narrow alley into a deserted courtyard, now would you?”
“No, that’s true. Unless…”
“Yes?”
“Unless I was a very naughty or foolish girl!”
He laughed, and I could not resist smiling with him
“Well, Dom, you aren’t foolish, as far as I can judge.”
“But am I naughty?” Why did I say it? The remark certainly proved me foolish, in my own mind.
His smile faded, and became an assessing stare. “Come and sit beside me again. I promise not to touch you, whatever you are.”
“No! I… I must go!”
“But you’ve just come!” His relaxed posture vanished in an instant and he stood up. “Don’t go yet, please. Is it because of the kiss? I did ask you.”
“No, really. I have… an appointment.”
“Come tomorrow?” The glass ball had appeared and was spinning in front of my eyes.
“Maybe, I don’t know if…”
“Oh, please yourself!” The sphere ceased to spin and he threw it in his bag. He picked up his belongings and was halfway up the alley before I realised what was happening. How dare he walk out on me? The insolence of it!
When he reached the end of the alley he turned and said, “It will be the last time.”
“What? What do you mean?” I shouted.
I ran after him, but by the time I reached the street he was lost in the crowds
