Here is the Halloween ficlet I promised ages ago. I'm a part-time goth and I really wanted to celebrate today in some style.

Summary: Orlando is a young Amish man getting ready to enter into his "Rumspringa" or running around years. Its a rite of passage every Amish person takes before joining the Amish Comminety and staring a family. Orlando hadn't planned on taking a rumspringa, but when a man enters into his life he can't help but want to spend sometime with him. Now Orlando must beside between his Amish family and beliefs and a man he might be in love with.

Notes: I have dyslexia, so my spelling and grammar is not great. I thought this idea for a story was a good one, and I wanted to share it so please forgive me. This frist part is bated by Thank you so much.

Part One:  An accidentally Encounter  Part Two: Having Some Porblems?  Part Three: Rainy Day Orlando pulled the collar of his hand knitted jacket closer to his chin. On his feet he wore a pair of warm black leather boots handmade by one of the local owners of an Amish store, and a pair of warm gloves his sister had made him last year for Christmas. During the night a cold front had moved into Lancaster County, leaving the autumn warmth behind in a cold blanket of rain. He had woken up this morning before dawn anxious to get his chores done and head out for Viggo’s to help him, with the born. He hadn’t slept much, tossing and turning in his bed all night long. He told himself that it was only because he didn’t know how his father would take the news when he found out that Orlando was working for an Englisher part time. But something else kept nagging at the young man that made him worry. The worry had to do with Viggo. Orlando didn’t understand why he was so comfortable around the other man, or why he had trusted him so willingly. There just was something about Viggo, that Orlando just couldn’t put his finger on that made him feel like he could trust him with just about anything. "It must be that Viggo don’t seem to have an intimidating bone in his body." Orlando frowned and sighed deeply, watching the puff of white air that left his lips and drifted off. "Unlike my father that would rather kill me sometimes, than look at me. It’s not something to worry too much about." Orlando told himself, as he walked out of the woods and onto Viggo’s property. "Viggo’s a good person, and I would be honored to call him a friend." Orlando picked his way along the small stream that ran from the tree line, to the north side of the farm. He hoped over it in one leap, as he made his way for the barn. As a child he remembered playing in the small stream on hot summer days. Orlando founded himself missing that innocent times they used to have back then, before they had grown up and the rift between his father and him had taken root. "Viggo?" Orlando called out into the dark cold barn, and frowned when there wasn’t an answer back other then the hushed neighing of the stallion that Viggo kept. He couldn’t help but chuckle as the big black horse come around and stuck his head out of one of the stalls. Orlando made his way over to the horse and stuck his hand out, so that the stallion could sniff it. He chuckled when the stallion licked at his hand, and pushed his broad chest up against the stall door. "Wondering where your master is at to?" He asked the horse, who neighed and shook his head. Orlando grinned and looked around the barn. From the time he could walk he had been around horses. He was good at guessing their moods and what they wanted, and right about now Orlando would guess that the stallion wanted out of its stall and into the pasture. "Just hold on a second." Orlando told the stallion as the horse pushed up against the stall again. He spotted what he was looking for. On top of a box Orlando spotted the halter. Grabbing it from the box, he slipped into the stall with the stallion. It didn’t take Orlando to long to do up the halter and lead the stallion out to the pasture. The stallion whinnied as he ran off and Orlando laughed. "Thanks for letting me know where Viggo is." Orlando joked with the horse as he watched it run around the pasture. Turning Orlando leaned against the fence and glanced over at the house. "Well," He told himself. "That’s a good enough spot to start looking for him." Orlando pushed himself off from the fence and made his way to the house. He smiled a little as he walked up the porch steps and to the door. He had never felt so nervous or anxious in his life, and Orlando told himself it was only because this was the first time he had ever worked with or been around an Engisher. Reaching out with his right hand Orlando knocked lightly on the door, and frowned when no one answered it. He knocked a little harder, and listened. On the other side he could hear the sound of something ticking and Orlando arched an eyebrow. It seemed that it was one of those alarm clocks that some of the Engishers came into the stores looking for. He chuckled again, thinking that perhaps Viggo was sleeping through it. He knocked even harder this time on the door, but still no one answer. He sighed, the last thing he wanted was to walk all this way over to Viggo’s and turn around and head back home. He had actually been looking forward to spending the time away from home and working. He reached for the door knob and to his shock watched as it turned in his hand. "Seems like Viggo doesn’t believe in locking his door." Orlando thought as he opened it and stepped inside. He hoped that the older man wouldn’t be mad at him, for letting himself in, but he didn’t see any other way of getting Viggo up, other then waiting outside until he decided to wake up. "Viggo?" Orlando called loudly into the house. Viggo woke up with a jerk as he was pulled from the deep sleep he was in. Something had woken him up and he reached without thinking to hit the off button on his alarm clock. He glanced over at it and frowned when he saw what time it was. "10:30?" Viggo thought and sighed. "Orlando should already be here." He moved to swing his legs from the bed and sit up when he stopped and listened. It sounded like someone was in the house. "Viggo...." Come the small voice somewhere out in the house and he blinked, recognizing it as Orlando’s. "Orlando?" Viggo answered frowning. "Fuck....Sorry....Ill be right out." Orlando laughed when a sleepy voice that he knew as Viggo’s answer him back this time. "Yep, must have slept in." Orlando thought with a small grin. He made his way to the kitchen, ready to take a seat when Viggo walked out of the hallway. "Gesss, Orlando, I am so sorry. I didn’t hear my alarm clock go off." Viggo said walking in behind him, and headed straight for a counter. "Do you mind waiting while I take a shower? I can make us some coffee...I mean you’re allowed to drink it...I mean if you drink it." Orlando grinned at how nervous Viggo seemed. Orlando nodded his head, but then realized that Viggo couldn’t see him. "Yeah, I drink coffee, in the mornings and sometimes after dinner with my family." He tipped his head to the side wondering why Viggo seem so nervous with him being in the house. He glanced around and then moved to the table, as Viggo busied himself in the kitchen. "Is there anything I can help with?" Orlando asked the older man as he sat down. Viggo glanced over at Orlando and smiled a little. "How do you like your coffee?" He asked pulling two cups from the cupboard. "Black will be fine with me." Orlando said moving to his feet and walking over to Viggo, standing next to him. "Is everything alright?" He asked. Viggo was silent for a second and then nodded his head. "Yeah, everything’s fine...just...I didn’t mean to over sleep...I didn’t hear the alarm go off..." He sighed a little, looking down at the cups. "Guess you could say I had a rough night last night." Orlando nodded his head, as he looked at Viggo for the first time that morning. He frowned a little seeing the deep black bags around Viggo’s eyes, and the pale tint to his face. "We don’t have to do this today..." Orlando said feeling a little sad that he wouldn’t be working with Viggo this morning or spending some time away from the farm. "Its raining anyways and it would make working on the barn a little dangerous. It will make the wood slippery." Viggo nodded his head, and sighed again. "If that’s alright with you, I wouldn’t mind." He answered the young man back and couldn’t help but notice the drop in Orlando’s smile, as he seemed to become sad for some reason and then quickly added. "You don’t have to leave if you don’t want to, I could us the company." Orlando glanced over at Viggo arching an eyebrow at him. "You mean that?" He asked in disbelief that Viggo would want him to stick around. "Yeah," Viggo said with a smile, watching the younger man. "I wouldn’t mind at all." He couldn’t help but chuckle noticing how innocent and naïve the younger man seemed to be. But for some reason Viggo couldn’t help but know that wasn’t all there was to Orlando, there something there, some kind of deep understanding, that most people his age didn’t have. "I have to admit that would be nice." Orlando said, feeling a little guilty. He should be heading back home. He knew his father and brother could use some help around the farm, but he just couldn’t bring himself to tell Viggo no. "And I shouldn’t." Orlando told himself taking the cup of coffee that Viggo offered him. "I have time to spend here, and I am of the age to be exploring the world around me. Everyone my age is, so why don’t I?" "I’ve got to let Hugo out of the barn, then we can sit outside on the closed in porch." Viggo said interrupting Orlando’s thoughts. "I already let him out, if you mean the stallion out in the barn." Orlando grinned a little and blushed as he looked up at Viggo. "I hope you don’t mind. I went there first looking for you, and he seemed eager to get outside." Viggo chuckled and shook his head. "No, I don’t mind at all. I usually take him out for a ride in the morning to give him some exercise, but as you can see, it didn’t work out that way this morning." Orlando nodded his head and grinned as he looked up at Viggo. "Yeah...I see that..." Orlando said in a small smooth voice of understanding. "Sometimes things we want to do just don’t work out so we can." Viggo nodded his head at the younger man, leaning his hip against the sink and looked at him. "You can say that again." The two fell into silence for a few seconds as both lost himself in thought. Viggo was the first to speak as he shook his head to clear it. He looked up as Orlando sipped from his cup of coffee. "Why don’t we go sit outside?" Viggo asked Orlando, as he pushed himself up of the counter top. "I know its raining and everything, but the porch is closed in so we shouldn’t get to wet." Orlando smiled at Viggo and nodded his head. "That sounds good." He was feeling a little closed in standing in the kitchen anyway, and a little fresh air wouldn’t hurt him. Orlando was used to spending hours out of doors. Most of his day spent in the fields working with his father and brothers. So it was on rare occasions that Orlando was actually inside. The younger man fallowed Viggo out into the enclosed porch, and he glanced around with a small grin on his face. "I don’t remember this being here." He said, looking back over at Viggo. He chuckled and nodded his head. "It wasn’t. My son and a friend of mine helped me put it in when I first moved in." He laughed a little more. "They where worried I would get rained on if I sat out here, and get a cold." He rolled his eyes and sat down on a chair that faced out over the property that led into the woods. Viggo found himself wondering how far away Orlando lived from here, and where. "Oh..." Orlando said sitting down next to him. "You’re married then? Is your family coming up to stay with you, once you get everything fixed up?" Viggo looked down at his coffee cup, wondering if he should tell Orlando the truth about all that. He sighed, and then looked back up at the young man. "No, I am not married....I am divorced. My son stays with his mother in New York City, where Sean lives. My friend." Orlando arched an eyebrow up at Viggo. "Divorced?" He asked tipping his head to the side. "What’s that?" Viggo was a little shocked when Orlando asked that. By the look on his face it was clear that he had no idea what a divorce was. He bit down at his lower lip, trying to think up the best way to explain to him what it was. He thought for a second and then said. "I was married at one time, to my son’s mother. But as the years went by, and we grew apart we realized we couldn’t make the marriage work anymore, so we ended it. We decided that it would be best for my son to stay with her, because of my work schedule takes me all over the place..." Viggo sigh with the old pain of remembering just why there marriage had ended. His ex-wife had been away for a week and when she had come back she told Viggo that she wanted to see other man, and it was then that Viggo also decided that he would like to do the same. When he had told her this, she had been mad at first not understanding. But as she got used to her new life, and Viggo seemed happier in his own, they both cried and laughed over the changes that had taken place in them over the years that had lead to them leaving each other. Orlando nodded his head at Viggo, now understanding what he meant by divorce. He had heard some of the brethren speaking about the evils of the "other" world and that had been one of them. Orlando took a sip of his coffee and looked back at Viggo. He could see that the older man was still hurt by what had happened between him and his wife. "There isn’t such a thing in the Amish world." Orlando told Viggo, trying to explain to the older man why he hadn’t understood what Viggo was talking about. "If a married couple has a problem or something they can’t work out, they go for counseling with one of the brethren of the church or a preacher. They work it out, and stay together." Viggo arched an eyebrow at the younger man sitting beside him. "Really?" He asked a little in shock. "What if they can’t work it out? What if it’s a problem that can’t be changed?" Orlando gave a small shrug. "There isn’t anything that can’t be worked out if both of the parties are willing to do it." Viggo shook his head and glanced out over the woods again. He sighed a little. "Some things just can’t be changed or fixed no matter how much both work at it." He took a sip of his coffee and then glanced back up at Orlando, who was looking as if he was worried that he had upset Viggo. "It must be nice to think that you have someone that you can speak to, that might understand what’s going on, or find a way to help, if it can be." Viggo said trying to relieve the look of worry on Orlando’s face. The young man looked down at his hands as if thinking about something and then looked back up at Viggo, shrugging his shoulders. "Sometimes, other times you just can’t talk to anyone about your concerns or what’s going on around you." Viggo frowned a little, seeing that something was bugging the younger man. What he wasn’t sure, but the way he had said that, and looked told Viggo that Orlando wasn’t happy about something. "What do you mean?" Viggo asked hoping the younger man would open up to him. Maybe there was something he could help him with. "Just that..." Orlando’s voice trailed off. "Sometimes it’s considered disrespectful if you voice a concern, or a problem to someone." He shrugged his shoulders. "And that’s one thing the Amish brethren don’t like. Someone such as a child disrespecting his father, or the head of the household." Orlando sighed and gave a small shrug of his shoulders. Viggo frowned as Orlando seemed to fall into some sort of depression in front of his eyes. It dawned on him that perhaps the younger man was getting into some kind of trouble for being here, and offering to help him, and that was the last thing Viggo wanted. "You’re not getting into some kind of trouble for being here are you?" Viggo asked Orlando with a tone of concern in his voice. "Oh." Orlando said, looking up at Viggo and shaking his head. "No not at all. I can be here and help you without getting into any kind of trouble for it." He chuckled a little at the look of concern on Viggo’s face. "I just thought that maybe you were, because..." He thought for a second trying to word what he wanted to say right, without insulting the younger man. But he couldn’t come up with anything and decided to just say, "You know the modern world and all that, I thought the Amish frowned on it." Orlando couldn’t help but grin at what Viggo said. Realizing there was so much the two of them had to learn about each other, and the two different worlds they lived in. "No...I mean yes they do." He thought for a second and decided to give Viggo the short reason as to why he was there. "About a year ago I entered into my Rumspringa." Orlando laughed at the look on Viggo’s face that told Orlando he hadn’t a clue what he was talking about. "In English it translates into "Running Around Years" Every Amish person that comes into age has it." Viggo nodded his head, listening to Orlando as he took a sip of his coffee. It seemed like another world to him, that Orlando was growing up in. He wasn’t sure, however if that world was any better then his own. Safer or if it where the some with just different rules. "See when a person enters into a Rumspringa, they can basically do whatever they want, as long as during the day they still respect their elders and such. At night, or when they don’t have to help out on the farm, the person can go into town and have a taste of the modern world. Like wear English clothing, get their hair cut and even own a car or something like that. After a year or so, then they decide if they want to join the church or leave for the modern world." "Oh." Viggo said frowning slightly He didn’t remember hearing anything like that before. But then he didn’t know much about the Amish community. " So..ah..." Viggo said tripping over his own words as he tried voicing them. "So you’re only helping me to get a taste of the modern world?" He asked Orlando. "You’re not going to get much of it here, as my son would say I am way too old fashioned." Orlando blinked at Viggo and then quickly shook his head. "No, that’s not why I am here at all!" He said in a voice a few levels higher then he was speaking with before. "I am here because you helped me, and I only wish to repay the favor." Orlando blushed slight and then added quickly. "I would like to think I was making a friend in you." He said with a small smile. Viggo could tell by the tone of Orlando’s voice that he had upset the young man by what he had said. He hadn’t might to make it sound like Orlando was only using him for that reason. He frowned. "I am sorry Orlando; I shouldn’t have made it sound like that." He sighed looking out over the porch and seeing that it had stopped raining, and the sun was beginning to break though the clouds. "I am very thankful for your help, I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t come." He glanced back at Orlando. "And I would like to think that we or friends. Perhaps we should get to work on the born?" Orlando nodded his head and he moved to his feet, and sighed. He hadn’t meant to upset Viggo. It seemed the more they talked the more there diffents come to light. He hadn’t meant to make it sound like he was going using him to get a taste of the modern world. He was helping Viggo simply because he had been nice enough to help him, in so many ways, he was sure Viggo didn’t know all of them. "I‘ll have to make it up to him." Orlando thought as he followed Viggo though the house. "Somehow."         ]
