Scotch on the rocks 3/?

I fell...

The words echoed through Hugo's mind, rattling the loose grasp he
held on control.

Control of the situation.

Control of the conversation.

Control of himself.

Turning from Craig, he paced the living room, trying to get thoughts
in order. "Craig, you have no idea what you're talking about.
Falling..." Hugo snorted, "you did not fall into anything. You
jumped, you had some fun, you bounced back up. You did not fall, you
bungee'd."

~~~~~
Craig rose up from the chair. Walking the few paces to his drinks
cabinet made his feet ache, his knees felt numb. He poured himself a
large drink hardly noticing what it was, and chucked it back in one,
throat stinging. He looked down at the empty glass, tossing it
between his hands.
"Yeah, you would see that. You never seemed to look too deeply into
me, just took me as I came. And yes I came willingly, everytime. Sure
we had fun, God so much fun! But you took something from me Hugo. I
fell…I fell in love with you." He ended and threw the glass into a
wall, watching it shatter. Anger rising and being quenched in one go.
~~~~~~

Hugo watched as time slowed the falling pieces of glass, catching the
sun and sparkling like diamonds. Thousands of diamonds, twinkling in
laughter, thousands of laughing voices mocking him.

Instantly, time sped up again, the shards sprinkling onto the
carpet. The emotions in the room swung about, hitting him full-on in
a monsoon gust, dropping Hugo to the couch.

Holding his head in his hands, Hugo shook his head slowly. "I know
you did," he said hoarsely.

~~~~~~
Craig felt the words hit him, cheeks flushing and eyes pricking with
tears, the world spun out of control and his legs buckled beneath him
as he fell to his knees.
"Then why. Why did you say you couldn't stay with me. I gave you my
heart, and you shattered it like that glass. Why?"
~~~~~~

//Because I was in love with you? Because I couldn't go through that
again? I couldn't *be* in love? Which answer would you like
to hear?//

Hugo looked across at Craig, his eyes fill with tears. How he wanted
to go over there, comfort him, make everything okay.

He opted for lame excuse number 13 instead.

"Because I was moving. Long distance relationships never work."

~~~~~~
Craig couldn't believe Hugo could stoop that low, not to him.
"Lame Hugo, really lame!" He almost shouted from his position on the
floor, head snapping up to meet Hugo's eyes. "I can't believe you
could say that! To me? My God Hugo, after all we've been through!
After I found you, tended to you that day, strapped up your wounds
and helped you back into the real world. Years I stayed by your
side, through black days and even darker nights. I know you Hugo,
your darkest hour in the middle of the night to your smile after a
mind blowing orgasm deep inside me." During this torade of words
Craig had crawled over the floor on his hands and knees getting
closer and closer to Hugo on the couch. As he ended, he knelt up
before Hugo, hand reaching out and tilting Hugo's chin up so he
couldn't avoid his gaze.
"Why Hugo. No lies. Why did you push me away like that?"
~~~~~~

"Why? Fuck, Craig," Hugo got up to pace again, nerves not allowing
him to sit still. Conflicting emotions tore him apart, desperately
wanting to tell Craig the truth, yet wanting to save himself and Craig through
avoidance.

He couldn't do it. He couldn't go through it again. He had barely made it
the first time.

Fuck.

"Because I *had* to. Because I loved you."
