The Wood-Monaghans
Part 4 - Jamie’s 2nd Birthday
Elijah saw the doctor out, and then closed the door quietly behind him. He leant back on the door and closed his eyes. They had been up hours with Jamie, and in the end they just had to call the doctor out. Jamie was sleeping peacefully now, her temperature having returned to normal.
“Tea?” Dominic padded down the stairs and stopped in front of Elijah.
Elijah nodded. There was little point in going back to bed. Sian would be awake in less than an hour, and he had to take her to school. He followed Dominic into the kitchen and took a seat. His shoulders were slumped with weariness.
“We’re going to have to cancel her party, Dom.” Elijah looked at all the food on the kitchen worktop. The small cakes, the packets of crisps, the bottles of fruit juice.
“I know.” Dominic turned around to look at Elijah. “It can’t be helped Lij. These things happen.”
“Poor Jamie, she was so looking forward to it. She wanted to wear her new dress, be a little princess for the day.”
“Well she still can.” Dominic placed a steaming cup of tea in front of Elijah, and then sat down opposite him. “We’ll have our own little party, as soon as Sian comes home from school.”
“I guess…” Elijah stared at the vapour rising from his mug. “I just wanted this day to be so special for her. She hasn’t been herself for weeks.”
“Well, the doc said its only a bug, she’ll be better in a couple of days.” Dominic looked at Elijah’s downcast face. “Tell you what. Let’s do something this weekend. Take a trip to the South Island. What do you reckon?”
“What do I reckon?” Elijah looked at Dominic’s sincere expression. “I reckon that sounds great Dom. I just hope Jamie is well enough by then.”
“Great.” Dominic grinned. “That’s sorted then.”
Their attention was diverted to the kitchen door, as it swung open. Sian slowly made her way in. Her hair was mussed and her pyjamas were all twisted.
“Morning Daddy, morning Papa,” she said. “Can I have a biscuit?”
Dominic smiled at his daughter as he got out of his chair. “Morning sweetheart,” he said as he gave her a hug.
Sian hugged him back then made her way over to Elijah. Elijah helped her up onto his lap, and he kissed the top of her head.
“It’s Jamie’s birthday today, Papa. She’s two. But I’m still older than her aren’t I?”
“Yes you are.” Elijah tried smoothing down her unruly blonde curls. “But Sian sweetheart.” Elijah paused as Sian turned her head to look into his eyes. “Jamie was very sick last night, so she won’t be having her party.”
“Aww…Papa…” Sian looked crestfallen. “I was going to wear my new dress.”
“I know, sweetheart, and I’m sorry. But Daddy and I have been awake with her for most of the night. You wouldn’t want Jamie to be all grumpy at her party now would you? You know what she's like when she's grumpy.”
“She is still having her presents though, isn’t she?” Sean looked very worried.
“Of course, pumpkin. And we’ll wait for you to come home from school, so you can help her open them.”
“And her cake?”
Elijah smiled. “We’ll have our own little party, straight after school. I promise.”
Sian smiled and climbed down off Elijah’s lap. “Can I have my biscuit now please, Daddy?” She asked Dominic.
**
Dominic waved goodbye to Sian as she left for school with Elijah and then went into the kitchen to carry out the usual ritual of tidying up. But the kitchen was relatively clean; after all, Jamie had not eaten with them that morning, and she was an incredibly messy eater.
After he finished his chores, Dominic ran up the stairs to check on Jamie. She was still fast asleep in her cot. He leant over the side and placed the back of his hand against her forehead. It was still cool. He then made his way into the shower, making a mental note of his promise to Elijah that he would contact all the parents of the children who had been invited to Jamie’s party to tell them it had been cancelled.
As he exited the shower he heard the phone ringing in the bedroom, and went to answer it. It was his agent.
“Kim, morning. Do you have a date yet?” Dominic rubbed his hair with the towel. “I thought we would have had a date by now.”
Dominic heard Jamie call him from her bedroom. Well at least she hadn’t woken up crying, a fucking miracle.
“That’s brilliant.” Dominic ginned into the phone.
“Daddy…!”
“Hold on a minute…” Dominic placed his hand over the mouthpiece and turned his head to the doorway. “Two minutes, Jamie…”
“Sorry about that…” Dominic continued to listen. Then his expression changed. “Today? Ummm…. no…no, that won’t be a problem.” Shit, shit. “I just have to wait until Elijah gets back. Yep, that’s fine. No problem. See you later.”
Elijah was going to fucking kill him.
“Daddy!”
“Coming, baby.” Dominic quickly dried himself off and pulled on a clean pair of jeans and a sweatshirt. Why did his agent need to see him today of all fucking days? Fucking typical. Well Elijah would just have to understand, and anyway, he would be back in time for their small party. He would make sure of it.
Dominic made his way into his daughter’s room. She was standing up waiting for him, her face lighting up as he entered the room.
“Hi, sweetie…how are you feeling?” Dominic lifted her out of the cot, and then sat down on a chair and cuddled her.
“Drink, please…” Jamie pointed towards downstairs.
Dominic smiled. “Come on then.”
**
“You can’t be fucking serious!” Elijah wasn’t taking the news very well. "What about Jamie?”
“Well what about her?” Dominic snapped back. “This is my fucking job, Lij. You know I have to go.”
“Did you tell Kim that it was your daughter’s birthday? Bet you fucking didn’t.”
“Jesus Christ.” Dominic turned his back on Elijah. He knew he was going to be like this. Then he turned very slowly to face him again. “I’ll be back, alright,” then he paused. “But if I’m not, well, its not as if she is going to remember it, is it?”
“You bastard.” Elijah could not believe what Dominic had just said. “You fucking bastard.” Elijah marched out into the hallway to get Dominic’s jacket and threw it at him.
“There you are…now fuck off. If your job is more important than your daughter, then piss off out of my sight.”
Dominic gripped his jacket tightly, he could feel anger brewing up inside of him, then he took a pace towards Elijah. “You have no fucking idea, Elijah,” he snarled. “No fucking idea whatsoever what this job means to me do you?”
Elijah did not flinch, although he was frightened by Dominic’s sudden aggression. “Oh, I have a very good idea, Dom,” he said. “A very good idea.”
“And what the fuck is that supposed to mean?” Dominic took another step closer.
Gonna fucking hit me Dom? Elijah’s mind was racing. Fucking force yourself on me. Been bloody good at that lately.
“Just go, Dom. Just fucking go.” Elijah turned away; the last thing he wanted now was for Dominic to see him cry.
“Well fuck you, Elijah.” Then Dominic was gone.
Elijah then did cry. He sat down at the kitchen table and bawled. His sobs were loud and they soon attracted the attention of Jamie who had been watching television in the living room.
“Papa? “ Jamie started to cry along with Elijah. She hated seeing her Papa upset.
“It’s ok, baby.” Elijah reached down and picked her up. “Everything is going to be ok.”
**
Jamie blew out the two candles on her teddy bear birthday cake. Sian giggled and clapped her hands, as she watched, and Elijah took a photograph to mark the occasion.
“Ok, who wants a slice then?” Elijah looked at his two daughters.
“Yes please, Papa.” Sian jumped up and down. “You want some too, don’t you Jamie?” She looked down at her little sister.
“No, cake Sianey.” Jamie shook her head; she hadn’t eaten any food whatsoever. She then picked up her new teddy bear and went to look out the living room window. “Where’s Daddy?” she asked, as she turned her head back to look at Elijah.
Elijah felt his heart break for his little daughter. Fucking, Dom. If only he could see this.
“Yes, Papa, you said Daddy would be back.” Sian stuffed some of the chocolate cake into her mouth. “He missed Jamie opening all her presents.”
Elijah sighed. “Well, we couldn’t wait any longer, could we? Maybe Daddy was caught up with something very important, sweetheart. I know he would hate to miss this.” You fucking cunt Monaghan, not even a fucking phone call. “Come on, help Papa to tidy up, its way past Jamie’s bedtime.”
Sian pushed another piece of cake into her mouth, and then skipped into the kitchen to fetch a plastic bag for all the torn wrapping paper. She helped Elijah clean up, and then she helped Jamie take all her new presents up to her bedroom.
Once Jamie was in bed and settled, Elijah spent some time with his eldest daughter. He kept on glancing at the clock, and the minutes soon ticked away to complete another hour.
“OK, missy, time for your bed too.” Elijah put away the book he was reading with Sian.
Sian pouted. “I want to see Daddy,” she complained loudly, and folded her arms in protest.
Elijah removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes. He had such a headache. “I know, sweetheart, but he is going to be late. Anyway we are going away in a few days, Daddy promised, to make up for canceling Jamie’s birthday.”
“Really?” Sian unfolded her arms and wrapped them around Elijah’s neck. “Ooooh, were are we going, Papa?” Sian loved traveling with her family.
“It’s a surprise.” Elijah kissed her on the nose. “Now, it's time for bed.”
“Will you read me another story?” Sian’s eyes pleaded with Elijah.
“Of course, come on.”
Sian raced up the stairs ahead of Elijah, who followed behind very slowly; he was drained and tired, and knew he would be in his own bed as soon as Sian was asleep.
**
Dominic opened the front door as quietly as he could. Everywhere was dark. He took off his shoes and made his way upstairs. He quickly undressed and slipped in underneath the bedcovers. Elijah was asleep, his back turned to him. Dominic felt a stab of guilt. But what else could he have fucking done? You don’t just turn down a meeting with the director of a movie you are about to film because of a birthday party. He would make Elijah understand in the morning. He was also going to have to make him understand that their weekend trip was off too, because that was when he was expected on set. Fuck, Elijah wasn’t going to be happy about that, not at all.
Dominic heard Elijah mumble. “Dom…?”
“I’m here, Lij…I’m here.” Dominic would have to make it up to Elijah somehow. And he could start now, he thought. Yes, that was a good idea. He pressed his body against Elijah, and felt himself rapidly harden against Elijah’s warm skin. Yes, he would begin to make up for missing Jamie’s party now right now.
It was over quickly, much to Elijah’s relief. He had been too tired to argue or object to Dominic’s advances. So he had just let Dominic fuck him. No kissing, no caressing, just hard thrusting and grunting. Elijah fought to keep his tears at bay as he felt Dominic come, shuddering deep inside him again and again. And as soon as Dominic withdrew from him and turned away, Elijah found himself waiting. Waiting until he could hear Dominic’s breathing lengthen and deepen. Then when he was sure that Dominic was asleep he quickly slipped out of the bed, and made his way into the bathroom to clean himself up. As he stared at himself in the mirror he couldn’t hold back his tears anymore.
What the fuck is happening, Dom? What’s going wrong? Why is it all going wrong?
