Always
Title: Always
Author: The Chad
Pairing: Give you one guess
Warnings: Angst... annoyance... strange ending... repeatativeness
Disclaimer: Don't know... don't own... just write
Notes: Sequel to "One-Up" which was the sequel to "Polite"... so it's a threequel? a trequel? a sesequel? a postsequel? an epolougue? And I think Elijah's off his rocker.
"Why are you here?" Dom suddenly asked. The two men sat eating breakfast at Dom's table.
Why are you here? The voice Elijah knew so well asked him again. Is it because it's polite? Because Dom invited you to the set of Lost, and you couldn't say no to your best mate?
"Um..."
That was good. You may have solved the world's problems with that! The voice mocked. Ruddy great job. Elijah vaguely wondered when he'd starting thinking in British.
"Uh..." Elijah tried again.
Even better! Elijah nearly rolled his eyes at his own stupidity.
Then Elijah knew the answer.
It wasn't all true... but it was polite.
"You're my friend," He stated. "You invited me to stay, and I hadn't seen you in so long that it worked."
"That's all?" Dom asked.
"You love him?" Elijah couldn't stop the words; they just came tumbling out, like vomit after too much liquor.
"Who?"
"Ben."
"In my own way," Dom nodded.
"Why?"
"Oh, Lij, I don't know," Dom sighed.
"Then you know why I can't honestly answer you question; why is such a hard thing to deal with."
You're right. The voice applauded him. For once, you're right. You may be useless and unloveable, but you're right.
"I have to get on set," Dom went and placed his dishes in the sink. "Thanks for making breakfast," He said.
"No worries," Elijah shrugged. "Cooking's a stress reliever to me."
"See you tonight," Dom beamed at Elijah dashing off.
Why? The voice demanded.
Why what? He asked back.
Why everything. Why won't you tell him? Why are you here? Why do you feel so jealous when you think about Ben? Why aren't you good enough for anyone?
I don't know. Elijah answered the voice.
Why won't you tell him?
Because I can't!
Great... now he was talking to himself.
Why? The rude, unanswered, unnerving, unrelenting voice asked again.
Just SHUT UP!
Why won't you tell him?
"Because!" Elijah screamed out loud.
Why?
"Because this isn't about being one-up on Ben. Because it isn't polite! Because we're FRIENDS!" Elijah panted; he'd been shouting.
Why just friends?
"I'm not good enough."
Why?
"Because I'm not!" He yelled.
Why won't you tell him?
"This is how it is. We're FRIENDS; that won't change."
Why?
"Because I'm a coward. I always have been. Always."
Why?
"Just because."
But why?
"This is how it always has been and always will be."
Always?
"Always," Elijah nodded.
Why?
"Because things don't change; I'm always me. I can get as close to Dom as I want, but it will always be this way," Elijah sighed.
Yes, but why?
"I can't tell you why," Elijah shook his head. "I don't know why. It's just how it's always been and always will be."
Always?
"Always," He assured the voice.
Always just friends? It asked.
"Always," He tried to convince himself and the voice.
No matter what?
"No matter what," He agreed.
But why?
