Prologue
Chapter 1
Billy sat in his living room trying to watch television, but his eyes kept wandering to the flowers, which he had put in a vase on his coffee table. Maybe they weren't for me, he thought. They could have been for anyone in the trailer - - - but why were they on MY chair?
His thoughts took a different turn. Maybe someone is playing a joke on me - trying to make me think I have an admirer. Yeah - that's probably it. Just a joke - or misplaced. Someone brought them into the trailer but forgot a vase, so they put them on my seat and didn't have a chance to come back. I'll take them back in tomorrow for everyone to enjoy. And with that final thought he turned off the television - Not really watching, anyway - and went to bed.
*****
The next day Billy was in better spirits. The flowers were sitting on the counter in the make-up trailer for everyone to enjoy, and filming went a bit easier. Once again the hobbits shared a table in the dining tent for lunch, surrounded by various elves, humans, and orcs, as well as crew members. The discussion for the day was favorite music. Viggo was emphasizing the virtues of good jazz, while Orlando - who for some reason could not meet Elijah's gaze - put his vote in for alternative and grunge.
"What about you, Bills?" asked Dom.
"Oh, for me, classical - Mozart, Bach, Beethoven," Billy smiled as strains of his favorite pieces went through his head. "In fact, there's nothing like a good Mozart on a Sunday morning while breakfast is cooking and I'm reading the paper."
"For me," Dom said, "Good ol' rock and roll - heavy on the guitars."
The discussion continued until they were called back to set.
*****
Billy was relieved to find nothing in or near his seat in the make-up trailer that night. He was now certain that the flowers were meant for everyone who shared the trailer, and were just put on his seat by mistake. He was glad that he brought them back in, and that he didn't make a big deal over them. Okay, so I sort of obsessed about them last night, but only for 3 or 4 hours. Really - nothing major, he thought.
Orlando popped his head into the trailer. "Pub tonight?" Elijah looked up and caught his eye, causing the 'elf' to blush, and said, "Oh, absolutely. I love watching you get plastered." Orlando didn't think it was possible for him to blush any harder than he did at that moment.
"I'll be there," Sean put in. Dom followed with "Me, too."
"Not tonight, mates," Billy shook his head. "Early call tomorrow. I need my sleep."
"But Bills, that's three nights in a row! Are you sure you're not sick?" Dom looked worried again.
"Positive, Dommie." Billy smiled at him. "We have the day after tomorrow off. I'll come out with you tomorrow night. I'm just a little tired from all these long days. Old man, remember?"
"Well, I could come over to your place instead of the pub tonight," Dom said. 'We could rent some movies or something, order takeout . . ."
"Don't worry about me, Dom. You go out and have fun with the boys. I'm going to go to bed early, anyhow."
"Uhm - okay. I guess."
Billy smiled at Dom again, then wished everyone a good night. He didn't notice the numerous pairs of eyes that followed him to his car.
"What's up with him?" Elijah asked.
"I don't know," said Dom. "All of a sudden he's too tired to go out or watch movies or anything. I'm worried."
"Try to find out, Dom. After all, Merry looks after his Pippin," Sean said.
"Well, I'll keep an eye on him. If he's sick I'll take care of him. If not - I'll pester him until he tells me what the problem is, or he snaps out of it."
"Hey," Elijah smiled. "Maybe whoever left the flowers will leave him something else. That would snap me out of a funk."
"Have you ever been in a funk?" teased Sean. Elijah stuck his tongue out at him. "Besides," he continued, "we don't know that those flowers were meant for Billy. They were probably for everyone, like he said."
"They were on his seat! That's pretty obvious," argued Elijah.
"What do you know about it? Did you put them there? Are you Billy's 'secret admirer' - as you called it yesterday?" Sean argued back.
"Hey, guys - cool it," Dom said. "We're not gonna help Bills by fighting."
"You're right," said Sean. "Sorry," said Elijah.
*****
Later that night the hobbits (minus Billy) and Orlando were enjoying themselves at the pub. They were joined by Viggo, Bean and a few others. It seemed like the entire pub was filled with cast and crew members.
The people at the hobbits' table were discussing Billy's strange mood of the past few days. "He's probably a little homesick. We all are. We just deal with it differently," said Viggo. "I'm sure he'll be fine soon."
"I still think his 'secret admirer' should make another appearance," put in Elijah.
"Forget about the 'secret admirer' thing!" snapped Sean. "It's all in your imagination."
"Secret admirer?" asked Bean. "What's that all about?"
The hobbits explained about the flowers and Elijah's theory that someone liked Billy. Various other theories were discussed and eventually everyone, even Elijah, agreed that the flowers were left on Billy's seat by accident. A few beers - and shots - later and everyone had pretty much forgotten about Billy. Well - almost everyone.
*****
The next morning -
The person slipped into the costume trailer before anyone else got there. They looked at the CD that they had bought the evening before. Mozart: Performed by the Wellington Symphony Orchestra. They smiled to them self. There would be no mistake this time. Billy would know this was meant for him. They pulled out the note that they had printed on their computer, wrapped it around the CD, and slipped everything into Pippin's coat pocket. The person then exited the trailer, making sure no one saw them.
*****
Later that morning the hobbits were getting their costumes on and laughing about Orlando's antics from the night before while telling Billy what happened. Seems Orlando is quite a lightweight - gets drunk quite easily. And the more he drank, the more affectionate he got with Elijah. To the point of practically climbing into Elijah's lap and grinding with him. Viggo threatened to put a leash on him if he didn't leave Elijah alone.
Billy was laughing with them as he slipped on his Pippin coat. Then -
"What's this?" he exclaimed. He had stuck his hand into the coat pocket and felt something hard. He drew it out and looked at it. It was a new CD - Mozart - with a note attached. He read the note.
Dear Billy -
I noticed that you're not yourself lately. I hope everything is okay. Here is a little something to let you know I care. I hope you like it.
