Chapter 1

Monday.

Charlie sat on his lumpy futon picking out a random tune and stopping to tune his guitar.  It was early evening and he was hungry.  He was listening to some of his favorite music on his old stereo.  Charlie had always loved music, even as a child.  He had always tied memories to his music, both good and bad.  Beatles were almost always good memories for him.  Almost always.

Things with their band had not been going well.  Their old equipment needed replacing, and the bills kept mounting up.  Liam was not around much, Charlie was forced to take over more and more.  He had borrowed a large sum of money to buy the new equipment in an attempt to keep the band together.  Liam just seemed to be in a world of his own, his partying and missing days were affecting the band.  Not only their performances, but their moral as well, which in turn affects their performances, it was a vicious downward circle, that Charlie was trying desperately to find a way out of.  His many talks with is brother had gotten him nowhere.

A loud bang at his door started him from his thoughts.  Charlie opened the door only to have it kicked wide as soon as it was slightly ajar.

“BLOODY HELL!”  Charlie yelled as he stumbled back.  “What the fuck...?”

Two large men entered, followed by a smaller man with delicate features.  All wearing expensive well tailored suits.  The two larger men quickly search the tiny flat for anyone else, then they return and stood 3 feet apart, arms folded across their large chests, allowing the smaller man to come forward.  His hair was cut short, buzzed.  His lips held a tight smile, his nervous eyes darted around the room.

“You…”  Charlie said as soon as he saw the loan shark.  “Look, I don’t have the money yet.   It’s not even due until for 3 more days.”

“Don’t you think I know that? Fffucking arsehole.”  The shark said defensively as he glanced around Charlie’s modest flat.   “This is just a friendly reminder, wouldn’t want you to over look your payment.”

“I, I wont have the payment in 3 days, but we have a gig on Friday night, I can pay you then!”  Charlie sounded excited, trying not to show fear.

“A “gig”?” the shark said mockingly.  “Where?”

“At the Palladium… Were not getting paid much, but I’ll give you all I get.”

“You’ll give me what you owe me…. Or…”

“Or what.”

“Nothing!  You’ll give me what you owe me, fuckwit.”  The shark motioned to his two goons and quickly walked out the door.

Friday night.

Charlie nervously paced backstage.  Liam seems out of sorts again, not focused.  He always seems to pull it together on stage some how, but Charlie knows that something is wrong.  Liam is pulling away from him.  His passion for the music, his love of performing all seems to be slipping.  It was his new passion that took all his time, energy and money… and now his soul.

On stage, Charlie is lost in the music, he plays and his mind is totally absorbed in the beauty of the songs.  His brother has come through for him again, somehow.  The rest of the band is concerned as well; they have not had another hit since ‘You All Everybody’ hit the charts almost two years ago.

Charlie looks out at the crowd, it gets smaller every time, he notes.  Many faces are the same.  Die hard fans, bless them.   But his eyes are drawn to the back of the theater.  A small figure in sharp suit stands alone in the shadows.

The shark has come to check on Charlie’s story.  He came alone.  But then he finds himself watching Charlie, he is entranced by what he see.   Watching… watching Charlie perform… watching his long fingers strum his guitar… at crotch level, watching his hips gyrate obscenely… watching him bite his bottom lip and throw his head back as if in the throws of ecstasy.  The shark was watching, alone in the dark.  It gave Charlie chills.
