Commandment Number Seven: Thou Shall Not Walk Blindly Into Anything
Billy hated to admit it, but there was the tiniest, most miniscule possibility that he had fucked up. And if he let his shields of denial down, not only would he admit to fucking up, he’d admit to being the royal mayor of Fucked-Up-ville. And yet, Billy was nothing if not a stubborn man. He had come close to apologizing many a time; in fact, the words were jumping within him. They begged to be set free and to escape his lips.
…that, of course, was before he had seen it.
And really, it could have meant anything, but while Billy’s imagination ran wild, reality checks happened much too often in his world.
This was merely another unwelcome, real sight.
A part of him – deep down where screams became whispers – felt that he deserved it somehow. And while that piece of information was both poppycock and truthful at the exact same time, Billy couldn’t help but feel wounded.
Then his mind reminded him that where he stood was exactly what Dom’s point of view had looked like so many nights ago. It was exactly what Dom must have seen, must have felt. Billy felt guilt and remorse flood through him as he made his way down the hall to Elijah’s room – every step feeling as heavy as lead.
He knocked on the door, the sound echoing in his ears as he felt misery creeping up on him. It took several minutes, but soon enough, a pajama-clad Elijah was standing in front of him, bearing the door open.
“I’m spending the night here,” Billy muttered as he stormed in.
Dom had known it was a bad idea.
It wasn’t just a bad idea, it was a mountain of bad ideas.
And somehow, he didn’t argue the logic or the plain roots of the idea at all.
Orlando’s lips buzzed in his ear, and his tongue flicked out a little to nab a taste of the cologne Dom had spritzed over himself before he had left his room in the morning. His eyes blinked shut at the feeling and the knowledge of how long since it had been since he had done this.
“Billy,” Dom pleaded quietly, one of his hands reaching out to halt Orlando’s motions. Orlando paused for a moment and hovered inches from Dom, waiting for the man to make up his mind. “Owes me one,” Dom concluded, pushing forward for a kiss. Orlando grinned as Dom kissed him and hooked one of his legs around Dom’s waist.
They maneuvered around the room, Orlando hobbling a little with the impaired walking ability, and Dom’s enthusiasm in regards to his arms caused one – or two – lamps to become better acquainted with the floor.
“Are you sure?” Orlando groaned, and it sounded guttural in a way that seemed to make Dom’s blood begin to boil.
Dom responded to the question by slipping his tongue into Orlando’s mouth with little care to how technically perfect it was, so long as it evoked the feeling that Dom intended. When a shiver ran up and down his back, he knew he’d achieved the effect.
“Yes, Orlando, yes.”
Billy tried to shake off the strange feeling that he was hearing things. He tried to knock the idea that he could hear thumping against the wall of Elijah’s hotel. Once his mind quieted, he then proceeded to talk himself out of pushing Elijah onto the bed and tearing off his clothes.
Dom left you, his brain teased in a singsong voice.
So, to be honest, the only thing stopping him from twitching and wanting was that simple barrier of common sense. And of course, there was commandment seven, which explicitly stated not to go rushing headfirst into anything.
Sleeping with Elijah again definitely qualified for something of the rushing sort.
“What happened?” Elijah yawned and settled into his sheets after getting the pullout bed set up. Billy sat up and punched his pillow to soften it up. Billy shrugged his shoulders as he settled into the uncomfortable mattress and shut his eyes tighter at the intruding light that Elijah failed to turn off.
“Light?”
“All I’m saying is that you have a room. Why are you here?”
“Elijah, silence is a golden gift,” Billy warned, not opening his eyes.
“Orlando is with Dom, isn’t he?” Elijah spoke quietly.
Neither man spoke much as the truth of the situation and what each of them was feeling hit the air. Billy remained silent for a moment, simply watching Elijah as the younger actor fidgeted with the covers.
“I mean, Orlando’s got his roving eye, and since the moment you and Dom started having troubles and…”
“You want to sleep with him,” Billy announced, and his voice was more than a little confused. He took a long look at Elijah, and when he noted that there was no denial, he nodded in assurance. “We all do.”
“Even you?” Elijah scoffed.
“Elijah, if Dom weren’t in there fooling around with Orlando,” the words burnt on the way out of his mouth, “well, then, I might have been in there myself. You know our relationship being on the rocks and all.”
“I don’t get it,” Elijah laughed lowly. “I grew up too fast and I know everything, but I don’t know anything about this. Why not me, Billy?”
Billy gave the child – he looked so young in the light, a true child – a bittersweet smile. With very little hesitation, he crawled out of the sofa bed and made his way to Elijah upon hitting the sheets wrapping him in a large, warm hug. Elijah clung on tightly, sighing in utter confusion.
“There’s no more reason to Dom being with Orlando,” Billy began to whisper into Elijah’s ear, “then there is for me being the idiot I am in letting Dom go.”
“Is that supposed to be comforting?” Elijah’s face screwed up in confusion.
“It’s reality,” Billy let go a little just to see the reaction he got.
“Oh,” Elijah replied blankly.
Billy found his way back to the sofa bed and smiled when the lamp was turned off and darkness filled both the room and comforted his tired eyes. He shifted a little to get into a comfortable position and felt a wave of sleepiness wash over him – and relief that he hadn’t done anything stupid.
“Billy?”
“Yes, Lij?”
“I really don’t like reality.”
“I know, mate.”
