Hyde Park Corner can still frighten even the most experienced driver, unless they're a nutter. People will go some distance out of their way to avoid it. You certainly don't go round it twice unless you're hopelessly lost. But this is precisely what the driver of the silver Mercedes did. He did it because the broad-shouldered Yorkshireman in the back seat had told him to.

"There, now look properly this time, you great berk."

Viggo leant over to Sean's side of the car, trying not to press too obviously on his friend's body.

"There you are, the Wellington Arch." Viggo nodded sagely at the tall white monument.

"Used to contain the world's second smallest police station." Sean spoke to the driver as Viggo sat back in his seat. "Okay, take us down Knightsbridge."

The driver executed a nifty little turn to cut across the traffic, and then they were on their way. Sean had spent the morning showing off the knowledge he'd acquired doing research for Sharpe. ("I've seen it. Was it worth doing research for?" Viggo had quipped. "Listen mate, that show made me a star, so I don't knock it," was the reply.) Now Viggo tried to show that he too had book learning.

"You know, I read that, before they finished the bronze statue on top, they were able to give a sit down meal in the belly of one of the horses."

"Yeah, that's right. But that's not the original statue that was on top of the arch. You see, the architect, Decimus Burton, he wanted a four-horsed chariot, but when it got taken over in 1838 by a committee that was organizing a national memorial to the Duke of Wellington, obviously they wanted the Iron Duke mounted on Copenhagen. That got taken down when they widened Piccadilly and moved the whole arch in 1882, and they added 'Peace Descending on the Quadriga of War', which is that thing, in 1912."

"Ah, so the original is that equestrian statue we saw back there next to the arch," said Viggo, deciding to boost his status by showing that as well as reading, he could observe and deduce.

"No," said Sean, spectacularly taking the wind from the American's sails. "That is Wellington, but that was done in 1888 by J.E. Boehm. Wyatt's original is now in Aldershot."

"Wyatt?"

"Matthew Cotes Wyatt, the sculptor. Didn't do too good a job, especially with the horse."

"And where's Aldershot? Are we heading there now?"

"Mate, it's about thirty miles away."

"Oh, so pretty close then."

Sean smiled. "You Americans. How can you treat an hour or two hours' journey like it's just going down the shops?"

"Because often that's where the shops are. It's a shame that we can't stop and have a proper walk about," Viggo added, changing the subject.

"You might be able to do it, mate. But I'd be recognized, and then it would be the whole autograph signing and smiling thing. I wanted today to be just you and me, my friend."

"And the driver."

"Oh, don't worry, he's the soul of discretion, aren't you?"

Laughing, Sean and Viggo sank back on the plush leather as Orlando took a left and swung the car towards Chelsea.
