“You have to come.”
“Why?”
“Because Orlando’s never forgiven me for breaking up with you. If you’re there and he sees there’s no hard feelings, maybe he will.”
Viggo frowned, he hadn’t realized Sean’s friendship with Orlando had suffered. “I’ll talk to him.”
“No. He’ll just deny it. Every time I bring it up, he swears he hasn’t taken sides.”
“I’ve never said anything to encourage him to do so.”
“That’s why I thought dinner with all three of us would be good.”
Sean sounded desperate and Viggo gave in. “Okay. I’ll be there and we’ll get it sorted out.”
Pull
“Viggo’s in town?” Why hadn’t he known that?
“Yeah and we’re meeting for dinner.”
“Tell him hello for me.”
“Actually, why don’t you join us?”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” Orlando couldn’t imagine a more awkward scenario.
“I’m sure he’d love to see you.”
“He knows my number.”
“Maybe he feels uncomfortable. I think he’s worried that you blame him for our breakup.”
“That’s ridiculous. Why would he think that?”
“I never claimed to understand how his mind works. If you join us, you can reassure him that everything is fine.”
He could never refuse Sean. “Okay.”
“Good.”
Strike
“Why do you want me to call you at nine?”
“I’ll be in the midst of a dinner meeting and I may want an excuse to leave.”
“And you’ll owe me?” Not that it mattered, that Sean was asking was enough for Karl.
“Yes.”
“Wouldn’t it make more sense to ask someone there to call you?”
“I trust you.”
“Who are you meeting?” He should have asked that first.
“I’m seeing Viggo for dinner.”
“Ah.”
“Orlando is joining us.”
Karl smiled. Now it made sense. “I’ll expect a full report.”
“Of course.”
“Then I guess I’ll talk to you later.”
Light
“So did it work?”
“I haven’t spoken to them this morning.” A fact that was more worrying than Sean wanted to admit.
“That’s probably a good sign then. They’re too busy to call.”
“Or too pissed.”
“Your heart was in the right place. They’ll understand.”
“I don’t know.” While he only wanted the best for his friends, they might not appreciate his duplicity.
“It was time someone gave them a push.”
“They might not agree.”
“Which is why they needed it. If it gets bad and you need asylum, my door’s always open.”
“Then I’d owe you two.”
“I know.”
The End?
