No matter where he's working, he votes.
Sean taught him that. Sean, warm and soft, on the couch at Peter's, taliking history, politics, maps, battles. He had felt more like Pippin with Merry, than Frodo with Sam. Sean's degree (college! how do ou fit THAT in?) is in history, and he would question Peter and Fran an Phillipa for hours on the divergent paths the US and NZ had taken after leaving the British Empire.
Elijah rememberd the warmth more than the details, the details are always there if Sean is there, because Sean will never, has never, let him down.
So when he turned eighteen, first-time-voter, Sean walked him through applying for the absentee ballot, actually reading the materials, and putting pencil to box. He'd voted! First time. Sean even walked him to the post box to send the ballot back. When he called his mom and Hannah that night he was nearly bursting with pride and gratitude, hugging Sean around the neck with one arm and holding the phone with the other.
That night, he promised Sean, he would always, no matter where he'd be working, vote. Always. Every time.
And tonight he'll watch, and wish Sean were here, and pray.
Because even the smallest person can change the world.
