Dom watched Elijah sleeping beside him. The rise and fall of his pale, bare chest had developed its own rhythm as the night drew on. The moon shined through the slits of the blinds, first playing softly across Elijah’s closed and fluttering lids, down his body, and now, as dawn was about to break, was glowing across his hip.

Dom watched Elijah all night. It didn’t take long after the last waves of pleasure had worn off before he had drifted away in Dom’s embrace. Dom had tried to go to sleep, but his entire body was awake. There was no way he was getting to sleep, so he propped himself up on his elbow and memorized every part of the sleeping form beside him. He wasn’t sure he would ever get the chance again.

Relationships never worked for him. As soon as he got close, he’d run. Dom was scared out of his mind with Elijah. Elijah had haunted his dreams for months, then this relationship started and for the first time in his life he felt something that he could consider to be love. And he knew that he would of course screw it up like always. Everything would be a catastrophe.

Elijah’s tongue sneaked out between his dry lips, and Dom caught himself shaking. Elijah made him shake, his entire body a ball of emotion that was just vibrating to get out. The clock on the wall read 6:34 am. It was still too early for Elijah to wake up. He knew the alarm was set for 9 – still over two hours. Tracing his finger along the smooth curves of Elijah’s arm, he wasn’t sure how he was going to wait that long.

--

Dom readjusted the bag on his shoulder and stepped out of the cab into the blistering cold. Turning around, he handed the cabbie a handful of bills and walked into the airport.

The mass of people around him was comforting – it was so easy to lose yourself in a crowd. That was exactly what he wanted to do. He didn’t want to think about where he was going, or more importantly, who he was leaving.

Elijah would never understand him. Never understand how Dom could never love him properly cause he didn’t know how, could never show him the kind of affection someone like Elijah needed, could never be good enough. Deep down it killed Dom to leave. He wanted to be there beside Elijah during everything life threw them.

Checking the flight number on his ticket, he saw the gate he was supposed to go to and started walking through the crowds, bumping into different bodies, wishing there was a way for him to switch lives with them, or even better, disappear completely.

--

Elijah grinned triumphantly and laid his hand down on the table.

“Gin.”

“You beat me then.” Dom threw his cards on the table in frustration. “You always bloody beat me. I hate playing cards.”

“You’re such a sore loser,” Elijah said, slipping down into Dom’s lap. He encircled his arms around Dom’s neck and pulled him into a kiss. Dom pulled Elijah closer, completely forgetting the lost card game.

--

Dom sat in the waiting area by the gate. The plane was sitting outside the window, and Dom longed to get on it and forget any of this happened – forget Elijah Wood ever existed.

He propped his elbows on his knees, placing his head in his hands. He rubbed his temples gingerly. From a million miles away, he heard Elijah calling his name and he tried to shake it out, but it wouldn’t budge. He looked up and saw Elijah running down the hall towards him.

“Dom!” Elijah ran up to him, red faced and panting.

“What are you doing here?” Dom asked, not getting up from his seat.

“More like what are you doing here? Where are you going?” Elijah looked at the plane and back to Dom.

“Away.”

“But why?”

“This won’t work, Lij. I’ll just fuck everything up like I always do. It’s better to get out before it’s too late.”

“It’s already too late, Dom. Why do you think I came down here today?” Elijah sat down beside Dom, but Dom just turned away.

“Just go away, Elijah.”

“But – “

“Elijah. Go. Away.” Elijah tried to find something to say for a few moments, but finally stood up and walked away slowly. Dom turned around to watch his back retreating, secretly hoping he’d turn around, but he didn’t.

--

“Elijah, I’m not so sure this is a good idea.” Dom looked around them, but no one was paying any attention to the two men dressed like hobbits in the corner.

“No one can see us, Dom. Where’s your sense of adventure?” Elijah nipped playfully at his neck, brushing hair from Dom’s Merry wig out of the way.

“This wasn’t quite the way I wanted our first kiss to go.” Dom closed his eyes as Elijah licked across a more sensitive spot.

“How’d you imagine it?” Elijah sucked on his Adam’s apple, causing Dom to lose all speaking abilities for a few moments.

“Well, not crammed secretly behind a set, while the crew sets up the next shot, while we’re both dressed like a hobbit. Something more private, like your house or a park or something.”

“A park? You’re such a sap, Dominic,” Elijah teased, putting a playful emphasis on his name. Elijah wrapped his arms around Dom’s body, pulling him closer and kissing his firmly.

“I do have to admit though,” Dom said, pulling back for breath. He leaned his forehead against Elijah’s and looked into his large blue eyes. “This was some first kiss.” Elijah smirked and kissed him again.

--

The London air was cold, and the rain was colder. Dom pulled his jacket closer around him and walked on. The set was still a couple of blocks, and he didn’t feel it necessary to get a taxi. He glanced at his watch, realized he would be late anyway, so he ducked inside the nearest café to get a coffee.

Standing in line, he rubbed his frozen fingers together, trying to warm them up. The clerk was sweet and young and nervously gave him incorrect change when she realized who he was. He smiled at her, making her even more nervous, before he finally got the correct amount of money.

Waiting on his coffee, he spied a newspaper lying discarded on someone’s table. He leaned over, asked the man if he could he borrow it, and was greeted with a smiling face he wanted to forget.

Elijah’s youthful face was staring up at him from the black and white print. Dom’s throat constricted as he read the article quickly. It was a bland article about Elijah’s upcoming movie project, some really expensive and highly anticipated film that could put him in the running for an Oscar.

Dom stared at the paper for minutes after he read the article, just staring at the smiling picture. He was shaken out of his reverie when an employee yelled at him because his coffee was done. Grabbing the coffee, he folded the paper, stuck it in the inside pocket of his coat, and quickly left the café.

--

“What do you think about us?” Elijah asked, snuggling closer to Dom. Dom adjusted the covers above them and looked at Elijah in the dark.

“What do you mean?”

“Us. What do you think about us being together?”

“Obviously I like it, or I wouldn’t be shagging you every night.” Elijah pinched him playfully.

“That’s not what I mean, asshole.”

“I think we make a very odd couple, but an attractive one at least.”

“Why odd?” Elijah cradled his head between Dom’s neck and shoulder, tickling Dom’s shoulder with his eyelashes.

“Well, we’re two guys for one. And actors in that movie about hobbits.” Elijah giggled at this and grabbed Dom’s hand. “And we don’t always compliment each other so well.”

“That’s what I like. How we’re not perfect. Fucked up even.” Dom shook his head and kissed Elijah’s hair.

“You’re something else. I love you.” Dom and Elijah froze as the words flowed so easily past Dom’s lips.

“Do…do you mean it?” Elijah asked timidly. Dom could feel how tense his body was.

Dom sat there for a few seconds that felt like a few hours and thought hard about it. Elijah didn’t move or breathe as he waited.

“Yes, I do mean it. I do love you.” Elijah let out a shaky breath and started laughing. He energetically bounced on top of Dom and kissed him.

“I love you, too.”

--

The California sunrise was beautiful, but Dom couldn’t enjoy it. He was too nervous. He rang the doorbell again, starting to believe coming back was a bad idea. Just as he turned away and started to walk back down the steps, the door opened. Elijah was standing in the doorway, sleepy eyed, hair sticking up everywhere, pajama pants riding dangerously low on his hip bones.

“What are you doing here?” Elijah asked, voice husky and sleep laden.

“You were right.”

“About what?”

“It was too late. I love you.” Dom shifted uncomfortably back and forth.

“I thought you believed you’d fuck everything up.”

“I’m sure I will. But now you know and have no excuse to get mad when I do. Hell, even you said you liked the fact we weren’t perfect.” Dom waited for some sign, some signal, anything from Elijah, but he got nothing. Elijah just stood there, studying him very carefully. Finally, Elijah stepped back and leaned on the door.

“Well, get in the damn house. I’ve still got a few more hours before I have to get up.”

That was so perfect! I loved how Dominic was so in love, yet so scared, and yet so smart.

Elijah would never understand him. Never understand how Dom could never love him properly cause he didn’t know how, could never show him the kind of affection someone like Elijah needed, could never be good enough. - That was the part that really got me. So insightful, wise beyond his year. Perfect.

Have to admit, found myself holding my breath near the end. [smiles] Wonderful job. Simply wonderful.
