Waiting
----------

Dominic is waiting for the right time. The perfect time. The time in which all the right elements collide and they both just know… now is the right time.

Ironically enough ‘the right time’ has come by more than once. And everytime Dom gets up all his courage, and Elijah waits with childlike anticipation and feigned innocence… something gets in the way. And the moment isn’t perfect anymore. The moment vanishes.

And Dominic feels like he could explode.

And Elijah pretends he doesn’t know about the lost opportunity.

****

Elijah stares at him. Big blue eyes eagerly awaiting. Dominic’s breath shivers as he scoots a little closer.

Room enough on the couch but practically no space between them. Just the way Dom likes it.

The perfect time.

The moment to get lost in Elijah’s blue oceans. To bring up his hands and touch Elijah’s skin. To lean in and brush his lips against the younger man’s. All of which Dominic plans on doing, and so much more even. If only Orlando didn’t barge in with his overenthusiasm, and his desire to go out with the gang tonight, unpurposely ruining the moment.

****

Dominic’s still waiting for the right time, counting missed opportunities over and over again in his head.

And he tells himself he can wait. Wait even longer. For the next perfect moment.

And he tells himself it doesn’t piss him off. It doesn’t annoy him. He’s convinced that it’s only a matter of time. That it’s worth waiting for.

But deepdown he curses every night he goes to sleep alone, seeing another day gone by. Another day of not kissing Elijah.

****

“Because you’re lying,” Elijah laughs, playfully slapping Dom on the arm.

“Am not!” Dom calls out, a face so serious one could almost be fooled into thinking he wasn’t kidding.

“Nowhere in the book does it say that Merry’s prettier than Pippin!” Billy sighs.

“Yes, it does!” Dominic thumping his hobbit foot hard on the floor.

“You’re off your head, mate,” Billy shakes his head, fake curls falling in front of his eyes.

And then Billy gets called by the assistant-director. And Dominic and Elijah are left alone.

Elijah grins, shaking his head in amusement.

“What?” Dominic can hardly suppress his smile.

“Merry was not prettier than Pippin,” Elijah smiles, “The book doesn’t say anything about it.”

“I’m sure it does,” Dom answers cheeky.

“So you’re saying Merry’s the prettiest of all the hobbits?” Elijah gleefully asks.

“Well no,” Dom answers so determined it catches Elijah by surprise, “Frodo’s more beautiful than anyone.”

And then Elijah notices the closeness of Dom’s body, and the fact that his voice has dropped to a mere whisper.

Dominic looks behind the wig and make-up and sees Elijah. He sees a mouth waiting to be kissed. He sees skin waiting to be touched. He sees eyes looking at him and seeing the real Dominic. Seeing it all, the good and the bad, knowing exactly what he’d be taking on… and wanting to go for it anyway.

And for a second there Dom contemplates closing the gap between their mouths, ‘cause he realizes the moment is perfect, if it wasn’t for the fact that they were on a crowded set, probably only seconds away from Peter’s yell to start the next scene.

So they let the moment pass. Deliberately, Dominic lets the seconds go by, falling deeper and deeper in the desire to kiss Elijah, but deciding not to act on it.

****

So Dominic keeps waiting. Every day waking up to find an empty space beside him. A space which he knows is destined for Elijah.

He can see himself waking up to Elijah stirring in his arms. He can envision seeing that gorgeous smile first thing every day. He can practically taste what goodmorning kisses would be like.

But all in his head.

In his imagination.

Because he’s still waiting. Waiting for the right time. The time where they won’t be disturbed or looked upon.

The perfect time.

But waiting is starting to unnerve Dom. And annoy him. He always thought he was a patient man. But he finds that being without Elijah is torture.

****

“…but then he finally realizes the guy was blind!”

Laughter fills the room as Sean passes around a couple of more beers.

Dom takes the bottle but carelessly dismisses it on the table next to him. As he leans back in his comfy chair, he decides an evening with about a dozen castmates is not the perfect time. No matter how much Elijah keeps staring at him when he thinks nobody else is looking. No matter how badly Dominic wants to lick some spilled beer off of Elijah’s fingers.

But the room is filled with watchful eyes and nowhere to secretly sneak off to.

Viggo is talking, but Dom is not listening. He doesn’t hear Orlando’s interjection or Ian’s witty remark either. He is transfixed by the breathtaking vision that is Elijah Wood. Elijah, who is currently watching him like he’s the most fascinating person on this earth. Who brings up his bottle of beer to his lips and somehow makes it look like an invitation to ravish him. An invitation Dominic would gladly accept. If it wasn’t for the fact that a cheerful night with friends doesn’t fall under the description of ‘the perfect time’.

But Dominic is tired of this. Tired of waiting. Tired of wanting and not having.

So he decides to take. He throws caution to the wind as he gets up in the middle of Viggo’s story and crosses the room. And somehow Elijah knows ‘cause he smiles—a knowing smile only understood by the two of them—and stands up too.

And Viggo knows when to shut up as mouths search out for each other and find themselves in a culmination of bottled up anticipation. As tongues gently caress and lips fit together like a complete puzzle.

And Dominic, having waited so long for the right time, suddenly realizes that it’s not the moments leading up to this, but the kiss itself that makes it perfect.

The End.

I saw several ways this could go, all of them obvious... but I didn't see this one coming, and it's the best of all.. *G*

You, you.. you nearly made me cwy.
I could see these two, Dominic crossing that room, thinking to hell with everyone else.. determined not to waste any more time. And Elijah, willing him to cross that room, thinking to hell with everyone else.. determined to start the clock from this moment on, that now it all really begins. Lovely! Thank you.

Eeeeee. Excellent. I wanted to grab Dom aside and tell him that there never really is a perfect time - just missed opportunities. I'm glad they both decide to stand up - to meet in the middle. :)

*points up* what she said, because that's what I meant, but couldn't say myself.

*happy sigh* This is just so adorable. Strangely, as i was reading it and sensing the tension and anticipation and all, for a while i feared it would come to some sort of a horrible, tragic end. Like neither of them ever did make a move and they lived unhappily ever after. Or one died in an accident and the other ended up regretting it forever. I mean, how ridiculous was that? Duh.

I liked your ending much better!

Oh, and... i suck with ratings too, but for all i know i'd say R is too high for this one. It's more like PG-13, or PG even. I dunno.

[identity profile] elliebethany.livejournal.com 2003-06-21 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree! Excess mush is excess mush, but a happy ending once in a while can be so good for you. :)

So this whole PG, R, NC-17 thing is totally confusing for me.

Ah, i know how you feel. Where i live, on tv things are K-15 or nothing. And VCRs just have some numbers on them. So when i first started reading fanfiction i was totally clueless about all that stuff... well, FWIW: G is the lowest rating. All clean. PG follows that, i guess if a story contains some snogging or bad language or such that would be it... NC-17 means p0rny and graphic, R is a bit lower but still pretty naughty... i think i've often seen stuff rated "R for violence" too. And, erm, PG-13 is something between PG and R. This is all very inaccurate, though, and i feel like i can never tell for sure which rating something deserves.

Thank was lovely Fin. Pent up frustration, and in the end he couldnd't wait any longer. So sweet. *Sighs a happy sigh.*
