Don’t You Leave Him

Part 3 – Resignation

“Elijah…Elijah…come on. Its time to get up.” Dominic shook Elijah gently on the shoulder. He knew that he hadn’t been asleep very long, and that when he had finally fallen asleep it was through nothing but sheer exhaustion. “Lij…” he shook Elijah’s shoulder again, and then sat himself down on the arm of the couch and looked down at the unconscious pale face of his friend.

**
The phone call that came through the evening before had been right out of the blue. Dominic had been playing cards and losing very badly to Billy when the call came. Sean had been frantic, and Dominic had a hard job trying to understand what he was saying. At first he thought that Elijah had been hurt and was in trouble.

“Sean, mate…slow down, I don’t know what you are saying. What about Lij?”

Billy looked up from the table, a questioning look on his face. He watched Dominic listening intently.

“Yeah, no problem, I’ll be right there.” Dominic slowly replaced the phone receiver, deep in thought, and then he looked at Billy. “Sean wants me to go and get Lij. Apparently he’s been sat outside his house in his car for hours refusing to go home.”

“What?” Billy looked confused.

Dominic shook his head. “I dunno. Look, I’ll see you tomorrow.” He walked over to Billy and patted him on his shoulder. “You take care.” Then he was out of the door and into his car. Sean didn’t live that far away.

Dominic pulled his car up and parked it behind Elijah’s. He looked at Sean’s house, it was completely dark, no lights on at all. He got out of his car and walked around to the passenger side of Elijah’s vehicle, opened the door and climbed in. Elijah didn’t look at him; he was just staring ahead, looking out into the darkness.

“I’ve come to take you home, Lij,” Dominic spoke gently. Elijah breathed in a long shuddering breath before turning around to look at him. His red-rimmed eyes told Dominic more than he needed to know, and his heart went out to him.

“Come on, Lij. I’ll drive you home in my car. You can’t stay here all night.” Dominic got back out of the car and went around to open Elijah’s door. It was a few seconds before Elijah finally let himself out. Dominic put his arm around Elijah’s shoulder, and felt how cold he was. He helped him into his own car, and then he slowly drove them both back to Elijah’s house. Once they were inside he busied himself making hot drinks. Elijah had sat down, in his living room. He hadn’t said one word during the whole journey back, but Dominic had a very good idea about what had happened, and he felt so sorry for Elijah, as well as a little angry. In all honestly Elijah should have known better, but he knew any words he had to say right now would fall on deaf ears. So they sat and drank their drinks in silence, and afterwards Elijah fell asleep, totally spent. Dominic had never seen him look so broken and exhausted, and he wondered just how long this had all been going on for. He fetched a blanket and carefully draped it over Elijah, making sure that he was comfortable as he possibly could be. The he went upstairs and prepared the guest bed for himself. It was a while before he himself drifted off to sleep. Poor Elijah, he was going to need him to get through this, whatever it was that had happened, and he would do his bloody best to help. He cared for Elijah too much not to.

**

Elijah stirred, and stretched himself out. He felt stiff and cramped, and for a moment couldn’t comprehend why he had been sleeping downstairs in his living room. Then it all came back to him in a rush, and he closed his eyes again in a vain attempt to block it all out.

“Coffee?”

Elijah opened his eyes at the voice and looked up at Dominic standing over him with two steaming mugs of coffee. He reluctantly pulled himself up into a sitting position. He felt terrible. His head ached and his eyes hurt, and he felt sick. He took the mug from Dominic and held it in his hands, feeling too nauseous to drink it. Dominic took a seat opposite him and slowly sipped the hot liquid, never taking his eyes off Elijah for a second.

“You ok?” Dominic felt stupid asking the question. Of course he wasn’t fucking ok. Just look at him.

Elijah placed his coffee on the floor and got up unexpectedly. “Can you take me to Sean’s house now please, Dom?”

What the fuck? Dominic looked up at Elijah. “I don’t really think that’s a good idea Lij now, do you?”

“Sean can’t drive. I’m going to have to take him in to work.”

“Elijah…” Dominic stood up. “You’re coming in with me. I’m taking you. I’m sure Sean has arranged his own transport in.”

“No…” Elijah was insistent. “No…Dom. Please…take me to Sean’s house.”

“Lij…stop this. Look, go and have a shower and clean up, you’re not going anywhere looking like that.”

Elijah shook his head. “No, Dom. You don’t understand. I need to speak to him…I need to see him…I need to…”

“Elijah…that’s fucking enough,” Dominic hated himself instantly when he saw the look that crossed Elijah’s face. It was a mixture of panic and helplessness.

“I need to see him, Dom.” Elijah sat back down. “I just need to see him.”

“Hey come on,” Dominic sat down beside Elijah, he could hear the pain in Elijah’s voice. “Come on mate. I know you’re upset.” He put his arm around Elijah’s shoulders trying to offer all the comfort that he could. “You’ll see Sean later, won’t you. Maybe you can talk to him then.”

Elijah didn’t reply straight away. Dominic had no idea what he was going through, and why was he here in his house anyway? He stood up. “Just take me to work Dom.”

**
Elijah couldn’t get into the make-up trailer quick enough. He pulled open the door and saw Billy sitting in there all on his own. He looked around. Where was Sean? Billy looked over at Dominic who entered the trailer behind Elijah, and Dominic just shook his head. Billy smiled his greeting at Elijah then went back to the book he was reading.

Elijah spoke to his make-up attendant and found out that Sean had been in really early and was now in his trailer waiting for their helicopter trip out to the lake. Elijah looked over at Dominic as if looking for help. All Dominic could do was shrug his shoulders. If Sean didn’t want to speak to Elijah then what the fuck could he do about it? Poor Elijah, he looked so fucking miserable.

Why does an hour and a half feel like all fucking day? Elijah had been clock watching the whole time that his feet and makeup were being applied.

“Can’t you hurry up?” His patience had grown really thin, as he looked down at the person painting his feet.

Carol looked up at him a frown on her face.

“I’m sorry.” Elijah apologized. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that.” But he did because all he wanted to do was to get fucking out of there.

“You alright, Lij?” Dominic called over to him, but didn’t receive a reply. Elijah was anything but all right.

As soon as Carol was finished with him, Elijah was out of the door.

Dominic watched him leave. He knew he wouldn’t see him now until the end of the day. Good luck Lij, he thought.

<i>Why does an hour and a half feel like all fucking day?</i> Elijah had been clock watching the whole time that his feet and makeup were being applied.

“Can’t you hurry up?” His patience had grown really thin, as he looked down at the person painting his feet.

Carol looked up at him a frown on her face.

“I’m sorry.” Elijah apologized. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that.” <i>But he did because all he wanted to do was to get fucking out of there.</i>

“You alright, Lij?” Dominic called over to him, but didn’t receive a reply. Elijah was anything but all right.

As soon as Carol was finished with him, Elijah was out of the door.

Dominic watched him leave. He knew he wouldn’t see him now until the end of the day. <i>Good luck Lij,</i> he thought. <i.Hope you work it out. I’ll be here when you get back, whatever the outcome.</i>

It was now sunrise, and Elijah could see his way easily over to Sean’s trailer. The light was on inside so he knew that Sean was in there. He could feel his heart hammering as he knocked on the door remembering Sean’s refusal to let him into his house last night.

The door opened as Elijah went to knock a second time, and he stepped back in surprise. Sean looked tired, very tired, and Elijah found that he was prepared to forgive him all the pain he felt last night if he would just let him in right now.

They stood staring at each other, neither saying anything for a moment. Then Sean finally spoke.

“This is not a good idea Elijah. Not now.”

“Please, Sean.” Elijah took a pace forward. “ I need to talk to you. Please don’t shut me out again.”

“Elijah, I told you last night. It was a mistake.” Sean felt like a fucking fraud as he spun his web of lies. “A very big mistake.”

“No…I don’t believe you.” Elijah could feel his emotions welling up gain. “You don’t do what you did, and call that a mistake. You don’t. No way…”

“Elijah…please…please listen to…”

“Sean, Elijah!” A voice called out to them. “Transport is ready!”

Sean turned around to lock his trailer, and then made his way down the steps one at a time being careful not to put too much pressure on his foot.. He stood opposite Elijah and looked into his face. He hated himself so fucking much right now. Elijah’s pain was all too evident. “A mistake, Elijah. Accept it. I have.” Then he turned to go.

**

Helicopters were noisy, and bumpy and not a very comfortable way to travel. But they were extremely quick. Everyone that was needed for the shoot boarded the two waiting helicopters. Peter and the film crew were already at the location, having driven there earlier that morning. Sean managed to squirrel himself away into a corner, far enough away from Elijah so that he didn’t have to speak to him. Three people separated them. <i>Thank god, thank god,</i> he thought. He just couldn’t bear to see the look of hurt on Elijah’s face, knowing that he was responsible for it. He had no idea how they were going to get through this scene coming up. No idea whatsoever. And in just a few hours his wife and daughter would be landing back in New Zealand. They would be at his house when he returned that evening, and he had to try to act normal. He had to try to forget that he had made love to another man in their bed. And he had to try and push to one side the very fact that he loved this man. He loved Elijah, despite what he had said to him last night, and what he just said to him outside his trailer. He fucking loved him, and would always love him, and he wondered just how he was going to cope with that fact, and get on with his life.

Much to Sean’s relief, Elijah was whisked away by Peter the minute they had disembarked from the helicopter. Today was going to be long enough, and it was going to be difficult trying to keep a distance between them as it was. God knows the boat scene was going to be difficult enough.

Sean sat down at the canteen tent and sipped a cup of mineral water. Just over 48 hours ago he sliced his foot open here, and look what transpired after that. His whole life had now changed. He was a cheat and a liar. God. Despair settled heavily onto his shoulders once more. <i> I’m so sorry Elijah, I never meant to fucking hurt you…</i>

“Sean!”

Sean snapped his head around and saw Peter walking towards him, Elijah at his side. “Sean,” Peter stopped in front of him. “ I’ve just been going over with Elijah the type of emotion I want to see in the boat.”

Sean glanced at Elijah and saw him looking directly at him.

“It’s love. Love born of friendship,” continued Peter. “It’s at this particular moment that Frodo knows that Sam will die for him, and Elijah here needs to get that emotion across to the audience. And you Sean, as Sam, have made the monumental decision to go to the very end with Frodo, knowing you will more than likely die on the quest.” Peter paused and looked at them both. “It’s a big scene guys, I suggest you take a little time to talk to each other about it.” Peter looked at his watch, and then over at the team getting the boats and rigs together. “I’d say we should be ready to shoot in about half hour, maybe a little longer.” Peter patted them both on the shoulders and then turn and left them standing alone together.

“Die for me.” Elijah’s voice was suddenly filled with sarcasm. “That’s a fucking laugh, isn’t it Sean?” Then he turned away quickly before Sean could see that he had tears forming.

“Lijah…” Sean felt weary. His shoulders slumped as he watched Elijah walk away, past the canteen tent, to the edge of the forest. “ For fuck sake…” He turned to follow him as quickly as he could, but it wasn’t long before Elijah was out of sight.

Sean reached the trees and looked in, his eyes searching. He didn’t want to go in there incase he twisted his foot and ended up in agony again.

“Lijah!” He called Elijah’s name. “Don’t walk off.” <i>This was fucking hopeless. </i> “You are right, we need to talk about this. Elijah!” <i>Fuck this! </i> Sean made his way into the forest, treading very carefully. “Elijah!” He saw him sitting down on a fallen tree trunk. His back was to him. “Elijah!” he called his name again. “I can’t come over there. Lij!”

Elijah slowly turned his head around to look at Sean. “What’s there to talk about, Sean? You made it perfectly clear. I was a mistake. A fucking big mistake. Now piss off and leave me alone.”

“Elijah no, it’s not you. It’s me…” Sean managed to edge in closer, stepping over fallen branches and hidden roots. “Don’t you see, I’m the one who made the mistake. I’m fucking married remember. I have a daughter; I should never have done it. Never. I wasn’t thinking… Elijah you have to understand that.”

Elijah remained silent; he looked over towards the edge of the forest past Sean’s figure. He could just make out the shimmering water of the lake through the trees. He didn’t know what to think anymore.

Sean finally made it across the forest floor, and his foot was throbbing painfully. He stood in front of Elijah whose eyes were now downcast.

“Elijah, I’m so sorry I hurt you. I never meant to hurt you. You have to believe me. You mean too much to me. I was a bloody fool. I wasn’t thinking properly…”

Elijah lifted his head; his expression was one of confusion and sorrow. “You made love to me, Sean. You took me to your bed, and you made love to me…”

“Oh…Lijah…” Sean could see tears gathering in Elijah’s eyes. “I know, and it was wonderful…”

“You made love to me, and now you regret it.” Elijah interrupted Sean. “And you’ll never know how much that hurts me, because I don’t regret it. I’ll never regret it, not for a single minute, not as long as I live.”

“Lijah, no…no, it’s not like that.” Sean tried desperately to get his words right. “I don’t regret making love to you. Not at all. Never. I just regret doing it, and I know that doesn’t make any fucking sense at all.”

“You’re right, Sean, it doesn’t.” Elijah raised his hand to wipe his eyes. “Do you love me?” He asked the question outright and without hesitation.

Sean didn’t want to lie; he couldn’t lie, not anymore. “Yes Elijah, I do.”

Elijah then placed his feet on the ground and stood by Sean, they were standing so close.

“But I also love Christine and Ali…”

Elijah nodded. “I know,” his voice was barely audible, he turned to go, but Sean caught his arm and pulled him back.

“I’ll never stop loving you Elijah…” Sean felt his throat tighten as tears welled up.

“Don’t…don’t say that…Sean…please…”

“I’ll always love you…”

“Sean…”

“Always…” Sean pulled Elijah towards him and took him into his arms and held him against his body. He fought back the tears that were threatening to fall. Elijah’s arms went around him gripping him tightly, and then without warning Elijah pulled his head back and kissed him, and the feel of Elijah’s mouth on his again was so overwhelming that he felt like he was sinking into the forest floor. Their kiss seemed develop into one of desperation, and Sean could feel Elijah’s hands slip under his waistcoat, and start tugging at his shirt. <i>Oh God he wanted this, he wanted this more than anything.</i> Then he felt Elijah’s tongue slip into his mouth and he sucked on it before pushing his own tongue back in. <i>God...Lij…</i>

Elijah wasn’t going to let go. He felt Sean’s body under his hands once more, and the warmth of Sean’s skin was hardly more that he could bear. Elijah leaned into Sean’s body even more, pressing his hips against him, and grinding against him. His body was crying out for contact. He took hold of Sean’s hand and pressed it against his groin, and groaned into Sean’s mouth when he felt him cup him. But then the contact was lost as Elijah felt Sean pull himself away.

“Elijah…stop…we can’t, we can’t do this…” Sean stepped backwards. “You know we can’t do this…”

Elijah looked at Sean; his breathing was uneven and ragged and his body was on fire. “Sean…don’t”

“You know we can’t Lij, you know it, you know it deep down…you know it.”

“Sean…please…”

“Guys!”

Sean looked away from Elijah’s stricken face towards the edge of the forest.

“Guys…we’re shooting now!”

He looked back at Elijah, and shook his head, and that little movement spoke volumes to Elijah, who felt like sinking to his knees in defeat as resignation swept over him. Sean slowly picked his way back through the forest, tucking his clothes back in as he went. Elijah didn’t seem to be following at first, but he eventually did, they both exited the forest together.

**
Elijah scrambled into the wooden boat; it rocked perilously as he did so. He hadn’t tipped the boat over yet, but there was always a first time and the water was extremely cold. He looked over at Sean sitting in the dinghy, waiting to slip into the cold water on Peter’s command. Sean looked so small and vulnerable sat there, and just looking at him Elijah knew that everything that Sean had said was true. They couldn’t be together, not ever, and that sudden realisation made him want to weep. Weep for himself and weep for Sean, and weep for things never meant to be.

He watched the dinghy make its way over to his boat, and just before Sean slipped into the water, he looked up at Elijah and Elijah could see that he had been crying. Sean held onto the side of the boat waiting for Peter’s instruction. Elijah looked down over the side at him, he could see that Sean was fighting back tears and was failing considerably, and he wanted to call a halt to this whole scene because he wasn’t ready, neither of them were.

“Ok, Sean…Elijah.” Peter looked at them both from his floating rig. “Action!”

Sean let go of the side of the boat, drew in his breath and went under the water. It was suddenly peaceful and silent, and for a moment he thought it would be a nice place to stay, leaving all the heartache above behind him. Leaving Elijah behind him. Suddenly that thought became an unbearable thought so he raised his hand and it was grasped immediately as Elijah caught hold of him, and began pulling him out of the water. Sean landed awkwardly in the boat, and struggled up onto his knees.

Elijah was looking at him, as if his heart was breaking, and it was, Sean knew it was, and it was all because of him.

“Sean…” he heard the prompting voice of the assistant director.

He tried recalling his words, but found it hard to speak, because these words were not just the script, these words were the end. The end of something, which had barely begun, and he knew that Elijah could sense that too.

A cough from Peter…he had to say them…

“I made a promise Mr Frodo, a promise.” Sean struggled, as he watched Elijah’s face, saw it creasing with pain of acceptance. “Don’t you leave him Samwise Gamgee.” <i>God this was killing him.</i> “And I don’t mean to. I don’t mean to.” <i>I don’t fucking mean to Lij, I don’t mean to…</i>

Elijah looked and Sean who was crying quite openly now, and he couldn’t bear it.

“Oh, Sam.” He leaned in and took Sean into his arms and he could feel Sean’s body shaking as he cried onto his shoulder. <i>I love you Sean, I always will.</i> Elijah closed his eyes, totally oblivious of where he was, he knew he was holding Sean for the last time, and he didn’t want to let him go. They remained in the locked in embrace until they heard Peter very quietly say Elijah’s name.

Elijah reluctantly pulled back from Sean who just looked at him. “Come on,” Elijah said the final line of the scene and turned to pick up the oars.

“Cut…” There was complete silence from the camera crew. Peter who was never at a loss for words, tried to think of something to say. He knew he had witnessed something during that scene; the emotions that were portrayed went far beyond acting. He saw Elijah turn around and take hold of Sean’s hand.

“Ok, we’ll leave it there guys. No need to do it again. Back to shore when you are ready.”

Elijah nodded. He looked at Sean but said nothing, then he picked up an oar and started to paddle back to dry land, Sean had his family to return to.

Sorry, I accidentally erased that one:
"Hm, I don't read that much slash nowdays, but I very much enjoyed this piece. It feels very realistic, and I'm sure that Sean had at least some amount of these feelings while shooting the movie. Very good angst, angst that isn't credulous or easy to manage, both by characters or readers.
Thank you for that!"
Is what I was trying to say.

Oh that was a fantastic story I have just read! It's sad, the pain was very real, and hurting, but sigh sometimes happiness is just not meant to be for 2 people, even when love is involved. Very real, beautifully written.
