Many Happy Returns

“Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear Billy,
Happy birthday to you!”

The room erupted into cheers and yells of congratulations. Billy smiled and raised his glass in acknowledgement. Life had been good to him, especially over the last five years. A warm, fuzzy feeling enveloped him; it felt great to be surrounded by so many friends and relations. A gentle tap on his shoulder made him turn round to face his sister, Margaret, who enveloped him a hug. “Many happy returns, Billy,” she said quietly.

He smiled ruefully. Ah, yes. Many happy returns…

===

“Many happy returns, Billy.” Orlando clinked his glass unsteadily against Billy’s. “And in a few hours we’ll return to your birthday in LA and I can wish you many happy returns all over again. I always thought ‘many happy returns’ was a bloody stupid saying, but it works perfectly for you today, both times.” He frowned with the concentrated look only the inebriated can achieve. “Do you think we’ll be able to do it again when we get to New Zealand?”

Billy giggled. “No, don’t think so. Isn’t it tomorrow there?”

“Will it still be tomorrow when we get there? That’d be really cool, having tomorrow. I’ve never been to tomorrow before. I’ve only ever had today.”

“Well, no, it’ll be today, but that’ll be tomorrow for us… now. Probably.” Billy decided he couldn’t cope with time zones, he was getting a headache. Of course, the champagne might have something to do with it…

====

He’d been told Orlando had been invited to his party, but he hadn’t made it because he was in the States filming Elizabethtown. No real surprise there; he was always off somewhere filming something. But he had sent a video of himself wishing Billy a happy birthday. Billy noted he didn’t say ‘Many Happy Returns’.

No, these days Orlando was more thoughtful than that.

====

“So here we are, Billy. Your birthday returns again!” Orlando waved his glass at his new found friend. “Many happy returns!”

“Thank you very much,” said Billy, leaning towards him with the intention of clinking their glasses together. He was surprised to miss, though given the quantity of alcohol he’d consumed, he shouldn’t have been. He was even more surprised to find himself leaning against Orlando’s chest for support. Billy looked up and found himself staring straight into a pair of dark brown eyes. He came to a sudden realisation. “I think I fancy you,” slurred Billy.

“That’s good, ‘cause I fancy you,” said Orlando, nodding carefully.

Billy smiled, then kissed Orlando softly on the lips.

=====

Billy made his excuses and headed for the Gents. He needed a few minutes on his own to deal with this. It wasn’t often the memories came back, but that one little phrase had opened the flood gates, and he could feel tears threatening to well up. He hated letting his emotions show in public.

Yes, he’d first kissed Orlando on a Boeing 747.

Their second kiss had been in Billy’s hotel room, the next day.

====

“Hey, Billy!” The Scotsman winced and held the door open, then watched in morbid fascination as Orlando bounded into the room. “Did you fancy going out somewhere together? We don’t have that meeting with Peter until this afternoon and it’s a lovely day.”

Billy narrowed his eyes. “Don’t you have a hangover?”

Orlando considered this for a few moments, then shook his head. “No.”

“Well, you should have.”

Orlando smirked. “Oh… poor Billy’s got a headache. Shall Orlando kiss it better?”

Billy nodded as Orlando pulled him into his arms and leaned in for a long, sweet kiss.

====

Six weeks. It had lasted six weeks. Six weeks in which Billy had given himself body and soul to Orlando. Six weeks in which he’d fallen in love.

Six weeks before one Aragorn was replaced by another.

In retrospect, Billy wondered if he’d clung to Orlando because they were away from home and he was the first person he’d got to know. Or perhaps it was his devastating good looks and boyish enthusiasm. Whatever it was, Billy found out soon enough that the feelings weren’t mutual.

====

“Dom, have you seen Orli?”

Dom shook his head. “Have you tried his trailer? I was just going over there.” He brandished a CD in the air. “I promised to lend him this.”

When they got to the trailer, Dom knocked. There was no reply. “Come on, you daft wanker, open up!” he muttered, knocking again. There was still no reply. Dom turned to Billy. “He must be in there. I’ll bet he’s fallen asleep.” He leant forward and opened the door.

Billy’s breath hitched in his throat at the sight before them. Orlando and Viggo were lying on the couch, Orlando’s shirt was undone, hands and mouths were exploring, caressing. They didn’t seem to notice the other two men. Without a word, Billy turned and left. Afterwards, he attributed the twisting pain in his chest to a breaking heart.

====

And that had been it. The end. Orlando moved on. For him, Billy had just been a bit of fun, a fling… someone to pass the time until the grand passion turned up. And it had come along in the shape of Viggo Mortensen.

Orlando had never realised how much he’d hurt Billy, but somehow, the two men had stayed friends, though sometimes Billy couldn’t help remembering what had happened between them, and how lucky he had been.

===

“Billy, wait up!”

“Dom, leave me alone.” Billy angrily brushed away the tears on his cheeks.

“No can do, mate. I’m not leaving you on your own after what we just saw.” Billy looked at Dom. His friend stared back at him, a determined look in his eyes. “I’m not going to leave you… ever.” Dom put a protective arm round Billy’s shoulders. “You’re stuck with me.”

====

“So this is where you’re hiding!”

“Sorry, Dom. I needed a minute.”

“What for, you daft bugger?”

“I was remembering how we got together. When you said you’d never leave me.”

“I remember.” Dom smiled and pulled Billy into a hug.

“You know, thinking about it always makes me want to cry.”

“Billy Boyd, you sentimental old fool!”

Billy looked at Dom and kissed him softly on the mouth. “We’ve got a lot to thank Orlando for, haven’t we?”

“Yes, Billy, we have.”
