We are in need of a new Orlando Bloom for The Establishment on Journalfen.

His player must be willing to keep all backstory involving current Est pups (including the LOTR gang) which their players want maintained (most of this is friendships and shared sexual history). Orlando is not partnered with anyone at the moment and we would prefer that he continue to be written as at least nominally bisexual (even if the new player would prefer not to act on the hetero aspect).

Please note that our players will stone you if you write Orli as a twelve-year-old girl or an angst whore.



Specific Requirements: Must have AIM and must be able to tag via IM or e-mail or locked journal posts. Chat logs are written third person, present tense (the game is closer to a cooperative writing venture than a traditional rpg). A writing sample is required/must be approved for admission to the game.

The Game: The Establishment is a role playing game which takes place in and around an underground, international organization devoted to bdsm culture. The characters are - for the most part - celebrities.

The game itself is just over a year old and has approximately 50 players. Logs are played out in AIM or through journal/e-mail tagging and then posted to the pup's individual journals. Players are encouraged to post for their pups on a weekly basis but there's no minimum posting requirement.

Again, although an rpg, we are very much focused on the writing and most logs are written third person, present tense in paragraph form, with the end result being much more like co-written fanfiction.

You do not have to be familiar with BDSM to write with us. We are willing to help the right player out. However, please note that we operate on the principles of YKIOK (Your Kink is Okay) and SSC (Safe, Sane and Consensual).

Due to the nature of the game - and where we are hosted - we do not accept players under the age of 18. Almost all material is rated NC-17.


This is not a first-come, first-served position. We require a writing sample from anyone wishing to play Orlando. Said writing sample must be a minimum of 2-3 pages long (previous rpg work, stories, etc) and as well, we will require a couple of paragraphs on how you propose to play Orlando (his personality, outlook, sexuality, etc) and a sample (200 word) post.

Please note that it may take us (in total) a couple of weeks to decide on a new player as Orlando has been a popular pup within the game and we want to ensure we find the best match.

I'm not applying, wouldn't know how to play an RPG if my life depended on it, but I did follow some of the links in this post and wanted to thank you for the free education. *g*

I've read some bits and pieces of RPG's before today and enjoyed them, but didn't understand how they worked. I'm a bit better educated now, thanks you your pages. :)

Not pushing you to change your mind but this is my first rpg as well. Had no prior experience coming into it. If you're interested, we have lots of people who are willing to hold hands and, given how the game is run (more as a cooperative writing venture), if you can write fanfic, you can probably easily write with us.

The game doesn't have to eat your life (although Orlando still might *grin*).

It's quite possible to make a post for him weekly (which you don't have to do - our only requirement is that a pup have something in their journal every 45 days or they become inactive) and then write a couple of logs a month (a log might take 3-4 hours in total depending on length and you can break that up if IM'ing or stretch it out in e-mail & journal tags if the IM'ing interferes with rl too much).

Just something to think about. It's a hell of a lot of fun.

Thanks for the extra details. I'll seriously think about applying for a pup after the PhD is done, but now is really bad timing. I've always wanted to have a go, but there are only a few characters that press my buttons, which rather limits my options. Orlando really is very tempting!

quick question for the mod in terms of real time committment for playing a pup. i notice an average of a couple of postings a week per character, but wonder at the back-ground time that goes into developing storylines and muns communicating with other muns re: pups etc. do you have a rough gestimate for hrs/week? or is that too much a 'depending on' kind of question?

It is a definitely a 'depending on' question.

But I'll try.

Some players post several times a week per pup as you've mentioned. Some only do this when their pup is in the middle of a particularly fascinating story arc, so if you look at the calendar for an average pup you'll see a real ebb and flow of postings. Some players never post regular journal entries for their pups and all we see are logs when they get posted.

It's up to you. Our guideline is for your pup to do something weekly (whether that's an actual journal post, a log, commenting to someone else's post, coming to a bar chat, etc). Something. But it's not a steadfast requirement. Your pup must have something in their journal every 45 days or they become inactive and they'll be put up for adoption. With someone like Orlando, we'd prefer to see something closer to the weekly posting but even bi-weekly would be lovely.

An average log *winces at making a guesstimate* takes approximately 3-4 hours in IM and longer in e-mail or jf tagging but that frees you up to do rl stuff and respond as you can (many logs start in IM and get switched to the other to finish off). So if you think of doing say maybe 2 logs a month and a weekly post (which takes you maybe 15-30 minutes to type up), you might be looking at time commitment of roughly 7-10 hours a month?

Storylines I find tend to develop on their own. Most of the Est players don't do a ton of developing of story arcs but some do and you can certainly do that. When I say 3-4 hours for a log, I'm definitely including meta in there but I also don't do a lot of meta.

Sorry for the novel. As you can see, it really is a depending on thing. With a pup as popular as Orlando you can certainly play as much as you want to but if you're willing to draw boundaries (and myself and alex (as admin) will help you draw them if you need our assistance) you can play just enough to have him nicely active but not swallowing up your life.

I have three pups. Karl Urban, Eric Bana and Billy Crudup. Karl posts something at least bi-weekly, Eric about the same, and Billy only every couple of weeks. Karl is particularly busy right now because some interesting things are happening with his storyline but he's not always that way.

ah, the bi-weekly is more than do-able for a month or so and I can definitely move to weekly as soon as summer classes end. Definitely promising. *ponders* i assume a certain level of character development/growth is acceptable while keeping a pup's previous history/relationships, yes? I'm more than willing to keep est!Orlando's past intact but am also tremendously interested in having him lose a bit of the 'slashy-orli' syndrome and perhaps locating his cahones (was that my outloud voice? ;)

The Est is fucking awesome at the moment! The whole JLM calling Sean master had me on the edge of my seat last week, was bloody worried that it was all gonna go pear shaped. Oh and Karl's email to Lin made me wanna cry! I could fangirl the Est girls ad infinitum - but I won't! And I hope whoever runs Orlando gives him some balls! Would love to see Peter Wingfield with him, maybe while Guy watches....

Helens and I have been facepalming over that one. Sean forgot JL's rules, Eric didn't know them and JL got carried away.

I was editing the log and going to Helens, "oh my god, we trashed jl's rules." It was a gorgeous log to play out but our boys are both feeling very guilty.

And Karl's e-mail. He should've waited to respond but he's been walking around on eggshells for the last two and a half months trying not to bother her or make things any worse and then she comes at him with that. *sigh* My boy... *shakes head*

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed. There's been a lot of angst from the muns about that. There's still fallout ahead, most of it very good in Jonny's mind, and it was weird seeing the log when it was finished. It's definitely an excellent example of how the pup does whatever he wants, even when the muns and muses know better.

Anyway, the whole JLM thing made me all anxious, I was terrified Ger was gonna do something rash. It was such a good strand in their story. I saw Festern btw, and I have to say I was amazed at how good JL's performance was, he really deserves awards for it, he was stunning! It was a really uncomfortable night in the theatre...

Peter Wingfield, well, I like the way that he seems so cold and so in control, I'd like to see Orlando scene with someone who isn't gonna be affected by his "chocolate" eyes, "soft" curls or general sweetness. Alan R was really cute with him but I wanna see him really taken down - Karl would be great but they know each other and there is a shared history and it'd be really good to see him scene with a stranger. I've really enjoyed what Peter's been doing with Guy, there's something rather unbending about him which I really like. Would love to read his and Ger's backstory. I keep saying this, but I really think that some of the best writing in the slash world can be found at the Establishment at the moment,it's always the first site I go to when I log on. Sorry, I know, I'm fangirling all over the place.
