Legolas’s blue eyes were wet with tears as he stood alone, gazing out at the setting sun. The Battle of Helms Deep was over. They’d been victorious after Gandalf had brought with him, the Riders of Rohan that had been banished by Grima Wormtongue, and helped them fight off the uruks of Isengard. They got victory after the uruks had retreated. But a great number of men and elves had died defending the fortress. Legolas cast his eyes down from the sunset, remembering his fallen comrades. Especially Haldir of Lorien’s.
He’d died needlessly.. and Legolas wished he’d been there to help him., to have died with him. Haldir had fallen while he was unscathed. He’d died alone.

Aragorn looked at Legolas standing apart from everyone. He sighed knowing what was wrong. He walked over slowly and quietly. Legolas glanced over at him.
“Haldir was brave Legolas. It was not your fault that he fell.” he said looking at the elf. Legolas shook his head.
“ It is my fault. I was not there with him.”
“But you were, my friend. You fought in the same battle. You were on the same side. He died defending The Hornburg. You fought together.” Aragorn said gently. Legolas stared out at the hills. With the suns last rays lighting the rolling hills. He bent his head and closed his eyes.
“ I miss him Aragorn. He was my friend.. he was my kin.” he said looking down at the ground.
Aragorn stared at him quietly. Stared at the grief in the elf’s eyes. He knew that Legolas was hurt. He didn’t know what to say to make him feel better.
“I’ll leave you alone, if you do not want to talk about this.” he said to him. Legolas turned his head and shook his head.
“Do not leave, i need someone to be here with me during my grieving.” he said his voice as quiet as the wind blowing through the leaves on the trees. Aragorn nodded and stayed beside him.

The two stood in silence for a while staring as the sun began to disappear over the horizon. Legolas looked at Aragorn.
“It is hard for me to accept that Haldir’s really gone. I have so many questions inside my mind that i can not find an answer to. My heart is heavy.” he whispered to him. Aragorn nodded.
“ I know it is hard for you to bear the burden of your friends death Legolas. But none of this was done in vain. He died yes. But he shall live on through our hearts.” Legolas looked away and Aragorn caught sight of fresh tears falling down the elf's timeless face. Aragorn glanced behind him at Gandalf, Gimli, King Theoden the riddermark and the others. He turned back to Legolas and stepped closer to his friends side. Legolas turned his blue eyes to him and stared.
“Legolas, Haldir was strong. He fought and died to keep all of us, along with the people of Rohan safe. He was brave. His spirit will wander in the halls of Mandos now. He shall never forget you. He will never forget any of this. Come. We must move on. Let your heart be light to know that Haldir’s no longer in pain. He’s at peace. He would not want you to be grieving so.” Aragorn said placing his hand on his shoulder, squeezing it reassuringly. Legolas bent his proud head and wept hard. Letting his tears fall freely, for he was safe, and for the ones that they’d all lost.
