John's face was looking worse than ever. They'd been filming on location for three days, and without a day off to let his skin recover it was red and raw. Viggo sat quietly with him outside his trailer and rolled him a cigarette. He liked to spend time with John. They were good at being quiet together. Sometimes, when Orli was off drinking with the hobbits, they'd have a few quiet beers together in an out-of-the-way place where John could relax about his appearance.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck," John muttered.
"Just try not to touch it," Viggo replied, lighting the cigarette and passing it to him. He accepted it with a Gimli-esque grunt and took a long drag. He laughed as he exhaled.
"You're a sneaky bastard!"
"It'll help, trust me."
"I don't doubt it," he replied, and took another drag.
They sat in silence for a while, watching the sky fade from brilliant pink to watery blue. Viggo scribbled idly in his sketchbook.
"What goes down in there?" John asked, with a gesture towards the book. Viggo noted that his friend did indeed seem more relaxed and like his usual jovial self, "you're constantly scratching away at it - may I see?"
Viggo held up the page he'd been 'scratching' on - a reasonable representation of John in 8B pencil.
"Not bad," he said, taking the book from him for a closer look, "not bad at all... I see you've rendered me blisterless. Thoughtful of you."
He flicked through the book - an oldish one that Viggo had almos filled - and a knwing look spread across his face. Viggo suspected that John would have tried to conceal such a look had he not been quite so stoned, but as it was...
He began to narrate as he flicked. "Orlando, Billy, Orlando, Orlando, Ian, Orlando, Peter, Orlando reclining, Orlando in the rain, Orlando laughing, Orlando dozing, Elijah..." He sighed and handed the book back to Viggo.
"Have you told him?"
"Not as such, no."
"You ought to."
"I know."
