"ELIJAH! NO!" Sean burst into the room and ran right at Elijah who was too confused to move. Sean connected with Elijah hard and knocked the wind out of him. With an "oof" and wide eyes Elijah hit the ground, and the gun that was pointed at Dominic went off with a loud bang.

Dominic didn’t realize what was happening. The sound of the gun so close shook his senses and spin his brain in four or five directions at once. Then there was a strange warmth on him combined with a similar coolness that would have compromised each other had they been in the same place. But Dom’s body knew that when that happened it was a bad sign. Dom’s brain was still spinning, but he could feel the alarms going off. He looked down and saw the stain darkening over his shirt immediately below his collar bone on the left side.

Then like a flashbulb going off he realized, "Hey, shouldn’t this hurt like a bi– " and there it was. The pain fell on him like a crashing wave and the edges of his vision went blurry and black as he fell to the ground with the wave. Screaming, it swallowed him and pulled him under.

There were words but he couldn’t understand much. Sean was yelling, then it was Elijah’s torn voice joining into the din. It rose high over Sean’s, and then there was a silence from Sean followed only by his scrambling for his mobile and the punching of three quick numbers. Elijah’s voice turned into a white noise of oh god’s and unintelligible mumbling accompanied by sobs. Dominic’s vision cleared for a second and he could see Billy’s angelic face above him. For a second while he batted his eyes, he thought he had died and an angel was carrying him off home. But Billy was an angel on Earth and he knew he hadn’t gone anywhere yet.

"You daft mother fucker! ... the hell ... fuck it all up?! You bumbling idiot!"

"Well how ... one react when he finds ... goddamn GUN ... ?! ... already bleeding and had ... YOUR APARTMENT! I didn’t ... follow your BLOODY TRAIL!"

Dom’s eyes were glassy and full of tears from the pain. Billy knew he shouldn’t move him, but Dom grasped hold of his arm and pulled him closer.

"I love you, Billy. I do. I always will."

"Dominic Monaghan, don’t you dare talk like you’re ready to close your eyes forever. You’re bleeding, but there’ll be an ambulance soon. You’re not going anywhere. You dumb twat, you thought you were going to die when that tiny bit of wood was stuck in you. Now you think you’re going to die because there’s a tiny bit of metal stuck in you? Don’t you dare. If anyone should be holding anybody, you should be holding me. I’ve been bleeding for damn near ten minutes now." Billy started to laugh, falling back on humor, however inappropriate, to keep him from going over the edge. He laid down beside Dominic. He was a bit giddy, and felt the greatest urge to sleep, but he knew he mustn’t. But if he just rested a second, maybe... just to sleep some of the wine off...

"Billy? Billy!" Dominic forgot his own pain when Billy stopped talking and turned toward his lover. The door banged open for a third time that night and the paramedics rushed in. One was pushing Dominic back down to the floor to examine his bullet wound. Another was lifting Billy up.

They’re taking him away from me.

Dom had lost all sense of perspective. All he knew was that Billy had stopped speaking all too suddenly, and he didn’t know if he was alright.

"BILLY! WHERE ARE YOU TAKING HIM?!" A paramedic tried to force Dom back to the floor and then two others were on him. They were holding him down, and Dom struggled. Billy was gone and Dom didn’t know if it was forever. He was hysterical and screaming at the top of his lungs, desperately calling Billy’s name. The jab in his arm drew his attention, and he clicked out of consciousness like a light going off.

Some time had passed since that very frightening night. Dom had nearly lost the things that were most precious to him in this world. The feeling that he had lost his beloved swallowed him that night. He never forgot how that felt. It was like your entire consciousness was your eyes and ears searching and aching to hear that he was okay. But in reality, you weren’t hearing or seeing anything except that pulsating fear that you had lost everything.

After the paramedics had sedated him, he had woken up in the hospital with Billy in the bed beside him. Both stayed in the hospital for a short time while Elijah and all the other cast and crew filled the room with flowers and cards and gifts. Elijah sent so many white roses that the room became a virtual greenhouse. Extra blankets were brought in and the temperature was turned down so the flowers would last longer.

Had Dominic not been shot and Billy not been stabbed, it would have been a lovely stay. The boys came over every second they had to spare and brought them food from Fidel’s. Elijah’s pleading eyes remained at a distance for a short time. He regained his humor after he got over his crushing feeling of guilt. The therapist that Peter recommended was apparently a really fine lady and as ‘Lando reported, "Not a bad looking woman for forty-seven."

Between Elijah’s short-lived self-separation from Billy and Dom and his therapy, a small relationship was blossoming between Orlando and himself. Dom approved and so did Billy. They were very funny together; constantly poking and teasing each other until Orlando won and ‘Lijah sulked, then Orlando let him win.

It had been years since that night. All wounds of literal and figurative existence had healed, the movie shoot was over, and they were all enjoying careers of their own. Billy and Dominic moved in together, but didn’t formally come out till much later when the general public’s reaction was, "Well, it’s not exactly news to us."

Throughout Dominic’s relationship with Billy, going on seven years now, he stopped to think about what could have happened that night had Elijah been knocked in a different direction and the gun had claimed his life, or if Billy had not revived after falling asleep on the floor next to him as Dominic screamed his name. He would dwell on the thought for a short second, then Billy would walk in and smile at him, or kiss him. Sometimes when he fell into thinking about it, Violet, Billy’s and Dom’s daughter would crawl up to his leg and gurgle happily. Then Dom would pick her up saying, "Let’s go find Daddy," and the moment’s hold on him was broken till next time.
