Of Love & Life
by Jenna
Dominic Monaghan stretched lazily and a smile crept onto his lips as he was roused from a deep sleep.
“I will never, ever get sick of waking up like this,” he murmured, his eyes still shut as a hand began to trace patterns over his bare chest.
“Well, you better,” a sleep-laced Scottish accent responded. “I’m flying out this afternoon.”
Dom groaned and rolled over, opening his eyes to look at his lover, Billy Boyd. “I thought we said we weren’t gonna talk about that!”
Billy smiled ruefully. “Sorry Dommie,” he said softly. “You know I don’t wanna leave.”
“So don’t,” Dom responded, reaching out and pulling Billy against his naked body.
Billy’s arms surrounded Dom’s body and ran lazy circles on his back. “I have to, Dom. We talked about this.”
Dom tried to pull Billy closer. “Please stay, please oh please oh please!”
Billy laughed and tried to pull away from Dom’s clinging arms. “I’ve already delayed going home by four days, love. It’s gonna get suspicious.”
Dom frowned. “So what? I don’t care! Look, I’ll call her, tell her everything!” He let go of Billy and scrambled out of bed, running naked out of the room, returning a moment later, cell phone in his hand.
“Don’t,” Billy warned, a bemused look on his face.
Dom began pressing numbers. “I’m dialling…come on Bill, what’s it gonna be?”
“Stop it, Dominic,” Billy warned again.
Dom frowned and stopped punching numbers, and threw the phone on the bed. “Stay. Please.”
Billy’s face softened as he stared at Dom, so raw, so innocent, standing before him, with a pleading look in his eyes. He reached out a hand and Dom took it, sliding back into the bed. “I want to. And I would, if I could. But you knew when I first came here, that I would have to go back.”
Dom’s shoulders sagged in defeat. “I can’t help wanting to hold onto the fact that everything might miraculously change, and you can stay.”
Billy ran his hands up and down Dom’s arms. “I’m sorry, you know I am. But…I have a commitment to her…”
“You don’t even love her,” Dom responded sadly, rolling onto his back, and away from Billy’s touch.
Billy sighed. “Yes, I do, Dominic.” He took a deep breath and sat up, pulling the light sheet across his waist. “Not like I love you, and not in a romantic way. But I care for her, for sticking by me and for loving me like she does. Granted, I can’t see myself being with her for the rest of my life. But I can’t hurt her like this. I need to tell her about us in my own time.”
“This sucks,” Dom grumbled, crossing his arms over his belly. “This really, really sucks.”
“I know,” Billy agreed, slipping from the bed and pulled on his boxers. “Believe me, Dom. Walking away from you is gonna be the hardest thing I’m ever gonna do.”
Dom watched as Billy grabbed one of Dom’s t-shirts from his dresser and pulled it on. He loved how the yellow shirt hugged Billy’s body, smoothing against his skin and defining his upper arms.
“You want breakfast?” Billy asked suddenly, his eyes falling on Dom.
“I guess,” Dom responded, downcast, slipping out of his bed and locating his own boxers, before heading for the bedroom door.
“Hey, hey, wait,” Billy called, grabbing Dom’s wrist as he passed.
“What is it Bills?” Dom asked, somewhat tiredly.
Billy stepped closer to Dom, wrapping his arms around his neck. “I love you. More than life, Dominic.”
Dom rested his forehead against Billy’s. “I know you do…I just can’t help feeling really…fucking pissed off with this arrangement.”
Billy ran a hand through Dom’s hair. “I know. I hate this too. But it’s not forever, I promise you that, love. Just…give me time. I’m only asking for time…can you give me that?”
“Of course, Billy. Course I can give you time.”
“Thank you,” Billy said softly, leaning forward and placing the softest of kisses on Dom’s lips.
Dom sighed. “So, what was that about breakfast?”
**
“All my bags are packed, I’m ready to go. I’m standing here outside your door, I hate to wake you up to say goodbye.”
Dom smiled through his sadness. “You know that songs makes me cry.”
Billy smiled and caressed Dom’s face. “So kiss me and smile for me, tell me that you’ll wait for me, hold me like you’ll never let me go.” He punctuated his words with a kiss to Dom’s lips. “I’m leaving on a jet plane, don’t know when I’ll be back again. Oh babe, I hate to go.”
Dom cried freely, the tears pooling in a wet mark on the collar of his button down shirt. “Stop it,” he whispered, his arms wrapping around Billy’s neck.
“Now the time has come to leave you, one more time let me kiss you, then close your eyes, I’ll be on my way. Dream about the days to come, when I won’t have to leave alone,” Billy sung into Dom’s shoulder, his arms wrapped tightly around his lover’s waist.
“I’m gonna miss you so much,” Dom choked out, his whole body laced with loss.
“I’ll miss you more,” Billy responded, letting Dom go slightly so he could wipe his runny nose.
“What am I gonna do, Bill? Without you here? To wake me up in the morning, to sing me to sleep at night. Who will I go out drinking with, who will I make love to on the kitchen floor…?”
Billy smiled slightly. “You better save all those things for me, Dominic. Because I’m coming back. I swear.”
“Don’t go.”
“Don’t ask me to stay.”
“Please stay,” Dom asked, his fingers wiping over Billy’s wet cheeks. “Please.”
“No, Dom. I can’t.”
“I hate her, Billy. With all my being, I hate her for getting you first. I hate that you’re so wonderful and dedicated to her. I hate this because you’re hers, and not mine.”
“Shh, Dommie,” Billy said softly, placing a finger to Dom’s lips. “I’m yours. Forever. You have to know that.”
Dom swallowed. “It’s hard to know that when you’re going back to her.”
Billy sighed and took a step away from Dom to push a hand through his hair. “We’ve spoken about this, Dominic. You know why I’m going back. You knew this before you and I were us.”
Dom took a few steps backwards and sat down on the metal seat outside the terminal. “This is possibly the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life.”
Billy sat down beside him. “You don’t think this is hard for me?”
“At least you’ve got someone to go home to!” Dom exclaimed, a little more loudly than he’d intended.
“If I were a horrible, selfish person, Dom, you know I’d stay. In a heartbeat, but the fact of the matter is, I care about Ali, about what she’s invested in our relationship. I’m not going to break her heart over an answering machine and have her find out I’m gay in some tabloid. I owe it to her, and to us, to do this the right way.”
“You will tell her, won’t you Bill?”
Billy took Dom’s hands into his own. “I swear.”
Their moment was interrupted by the Batman theme coming from Billy’s pants pocket.
He fished out his cell phone and answered it. “Hello?”
He gave Dom’s hands a squeeze and stood up. “Ali! Yes, I’m at the airport…I miss you too…yes, yes, Dom says hi back…oh really? 4 days? I’ve had fun…drinking a lot…I know, it has been too long…in about 20 minutes…say hello to them for me…I love you too, Al…bye.”
“Well, if that wasn’t the final dagger…” Dom muttered to himself before getting up off the bench and walking away.
“Dom!” Billy called, chasing after him in the near empty terminal. “Wait!”
“I can’t do this, Billy!” Dom said, stopping to turn around, tears streaming down his face. “I can’t do this, I can’t let you go and know you’re going back to her, when you should be here with me, needing me, wanting me, making love to me…” He broke down in sobs and sank to the dirty floor of the LAX airport.
“Get up, Dommie,” Billy said softly, reaching out his hand.
“No,” Dom refused, pouting like a three-year-old.
“You’re gonna get those pants all dirty.”
“So?” Dom demanded, sticking out his lower lip.
“Get up, Dominic,” Billy said firmly.
“Fine,” Dom relented and got up, without the aide of Billy’s hand.
But he didn’t stay, he stalked away back towards Billy’s carry-on that lay in front of gate 241.
“Would you quite being such a baby,” Billy demanded, following after him, grabbing his black cotton shirt by the tails and pulling him to a stop.
Dom crossed his arms. “I think I can act like a baby if I want,” He retorted indignantly.
Billy dropped his arms. “You know what, Dominic? If you wanna act like this, fine. Be pathetic, but I’m leaving.” A boarding call for Billy’s flight was suddenly announced. “Now, you can either be the 27-years you are, or stand here and pout like a child.”
A few people began to straggle towards gate 241, checking in with the stewardess at the gate and then made their way onto the plane.
Dom considered Billy’s words. “Have a good flight, William,” he said icily.
Billy bent and retrieved his carry-on. “You know, I must’ve been stupid to think that you’d actually consider acting like an adult.”
He turned from Dom and walked away, handing his ticket to the lady at the gate, who regarded him with a curious eye.
Dom watched until Billy had disappeared into the long hallway that would take him to Ali. Dom’s heart began to slowly break as the notion of what he was doing began to take effect.
He was losing his heart.
“Wait!” he shouted suddenly, and pushed past the gate clerk and a few passengers, breaking into a run down the hallway.
He made his way onto the plane, acting like a passenger.
Row 7, seat 14, business class.
He entered business class and could see Billy’s blonde head just above the plush red seats.
He made his way down the aisle and sat down beside his lover.
“Dom!” Billy hissed. “What are you doing?”
“I’m not letting you leave without doing this,” he said, and pulled Billy into his arms, crushing their lips together in a passionate embrace.
Billy’s arms wrapped around Dom’s waist as his lips were parted and Dom’s tongue snaked between his teeth. Billy whimpered in submission as his mouth was attacked by Dom’s flesh, teasing and coaxing his own tongue into action.
Dom’s hands pressed against Billy’s back, holding their bodies together.
“Dom…” Billy murmured, pulling back slightly. “Dom…”
“Oh Billy, I’m so sorry, you can’t leave without knowing how much I love you, how much I’m going to miss you. You need to know I’ll wait for you, I’ll wait forever, I promise—“
“Dommie!”
“What?”
“Shut up!” Billy took a deep breath. “Just…stop talking. I-I’m so sorry I just walked away like that…I should never have done that, this is all so hard and I’m sorry…”
Dom grasped Billy’s hand. “I’m sorry too. I- just love you.”
“Excuse me, sir? May I see your boarding pass?”
Dom looked up at the deep voice, and into the face of a very big, very angry looking security guard.
“Boarding pass?” he prompted.
Dom smiled. “I uh…don’t have one.”
“Then I’ll have to ask you to exit the aircraft.”
“Can I have a minute, please?” Dom asked the man.
“Now, sir.”
Dom frowned. “I just need a second, promise.” He turned back to Billy.
The guard clamped a hand down on Dom’s shoulder and reefed him upwards.
“Hey!” Dom exclaimed, worming out of the guard’s grasp. “Listen, G.I Joe, I just want a second with my boyfriend, here!”
“And I want you off the plane,” the guard responded, and began dragging Dom towards the exit.
“Bill!” Dom called.
Billy followed Dom, a smile on his face.
“Billy! I love you!” Dom called out, stumbling over something as the guard stopped at the exit.
“I love you, Dom!” Billy shouted back as Dom was escorted off the plane.
Billy raced back to his seat and watched out the window, to see Dom being forcefully pushed out of the gate, and to the metal bench they’d just vacated.
Billy pressed his palm to the window, praying Dom would notice him. As if fate were on their side, Dom looked up, his face breaking into a smile, and he flattened himself against the plate glass windows, waving like a maniac.
“Love you, my Dommie,” Billy whispered. “I’ll be back soon.”
In the terminal, Dom sighed heavily. “I love you, Bill…see you soon.”
