”And I know it’s not the right thing”
--NIN

**13 months earlier**

"Orli, love...c'mere. I'd like you to meet Karl."

Another cast member...Eomer, if Orli remembered it right. He hadn't met Eomer yet. Apparently, the guy playing him had been off doing another movie. Orli smiled as he walked across the room to Viggo, caught sight of the tall, dark-haired man standing next to him. And his smile stumbled, faltered. Jesus...

"So you're the elf." Karl smiled and held out his hand. His fingers wrapped around Orli's in a warm, firm grasp, and Orli had to consciously think before he could speak. The jolt that tore through him at the slight press of his hand in Karl's had Orli's smile falling completely. For one brief moment, he looked deep into hazel eyes...and the entire world was stripped away, leaving only him and this stranger...and the hunger that tore through him had him beyond scared.

"Nice to meet you," he finally got out.

"Yeah," Karl said, voice quiet, one corner of his mouth curving in a smile as he tilted his head and studied Orli. His hand pulled away from Orli's slowly, as if reluctant to release the contact. "Looking forward to working with you and everyone else."

"Karl, who's your friend?"

Orli glanced up, startled, surprised to find himself still at Viggo's house in the middle of their party, surprised to see Viggo standing next to him, small smile still on his face. Watched as Karl was joined by another man...also tall and dark-haired, but older. Probably around Viggo's age. "Hi, I'm Harry," he said, sticking out a hand as the other moved around Karl's waist.

"Harry, this is Orlando Bloom," Karl replied, eyes still on Orli, mouth still curved in a faint smile. He paid no outward attention to the arm around his waist, but his body leaned into it. "He's playing the elf."

"*The* Elf, you'll give him a complex," Viggo laughed, curling his hand around Orli's.

"Hush, you." Orli felt immediately better, once he felt the solid, comforting weight of Viggo's hand in his. He reached out, shook Harry's hand briefly. "Pleasure."

"Harry's playing Isildur."

"Is that right?" Orli's smile was still open, still easy...but his eyes kept sliding to Harry's arm around Karl's waist.

"Yeah, his big 15 minutes of real fame." Karl was grinning, his voice teasing as he glanced at Harry.

"So says the man who wouldn't be in the movie if not for me," Harry shot back, laughing.

Karl just waved a hand and smirked. His expression sent a shiver racing through Orli's body. "Peter would have still cast me," Karl said.

"I have a feeling there's a story here," Viggo replied, sipping his drink.

"I cast Karl as the lead in a film that we just finished," Harry began, arm tightening almost imperceptibly around Karl's waist.

"And he showed it to Peter, and Peter loved me," Karl broke in. Orli almost choked on his laughter when Karl rolled his eyes and winked. "So now Harry likes to tell everyone that he got me cast as Eomer."

"Next time I'll remember to sleep with the director instead of my co-star," Orli teased, squeezing his fingers around Viggo’s. Karl met his grin, matched it...and time slowed, fractured again.

"Peter's already cast you," Viggo teased back, jolting Orli to the present. What the fuck was happening to him?

"Lucky for us, I'd say," Karl murmured, still smiling. Orli gave him a sharp glance, forcing his eyes not to skim to the arm around Karl's waist again. "You move like an elf."

"Don't think you'd want to sleep with the director on this one," Harry said, smirking when Orli's eyes widened and Viggo sputtered with laughter.

"Ah, Harry, I think I'm going to like you," Viggo smiled.

Suddenly, it was all a bit much. Too many people, the noise was too much...Orli just wanted some quiet. "I think I'm going to slip outside for a smoke," he said, and kissed Viggo's cheek. "It was nice meeting both of you. I'm sure we'll all be sick of each other before too long," he smiled, winking when Harry and Viggo laughed. He studiously avoided Karl's eyes as he walked away.

Karl watched Orli leave, ignoring the joking that passed between Viggo and Harry. He watched, waited until Orli had vanished through one of the doors leading to the backyard. Then he turned and smiled at Harry, lifting his empty bottle. "I'm going to get another beer. Be back in a bit."

Harry just nodded and squeezed Karl's hand before returning to his conversation with Viggo. Good enough. Karl knew Harry when he started talking...he'd be distracted until Karl returned and dragged him away. Palm still tingling from its brief contact with Orli's, Karl wandered into the kitchen, retrieved a fresh beer, and walked outside.

He found Orli at the edge of the darkened yard, calmly smoking, looking up at the night sky. "Beautiful, aren't they?" Orli asked, without turning.

Karl looked up, taking a swallow of his beer. "They're pretty enough," he said, eyes shifting to watch as Orli lifted the cigarette to his mouth, took a drag, tongue flicking across his lower lip before he exhaled.

"It's a different world out here. England seems very far away." Orli finally turned a bit, and Karl's breath caught at the sight of a pure profile framed by moonlight.

"I imagine it does." Karl took a step closer, eyes tracing Orli's features, bottle dangling loosely, forgotten, from one hand. "Must be hard for you to be so far away from home for so long."

"A bit yeah." Orli turned fully to face him, a soft smile curving the corners of sharp cheekbones. "But it's a great adventure, you know?" He threw his cigarette down to his feet, crushed it, looking back up at Karl through lowered lashes. "Must be nice for you to have work so close to home."

"Yeah," Karl murmured, returning the smile. He saw a flash of something in Orli's eyes, couldn't identify it, but his palm was tingling again. "A lot of my friends are working on this project. Pretty big break for everyone here."

Orli nodded, newly shaven head gleaming in the silvery light. He looked a bit otherworldly...it was easy to see why PJ had cast him. "I've got to get back inside, play good host," Orli said, that same small smile flitting across full lips. He started to walk past, body slightly brushing against Karl's.

Karl felt as if a bolt of lightning had slammed through him. He saw Orli jerk, knew he'd felt the same. Without thinking, he reached out, hand curling around Orli's forearm in a loose grip. "Surely he can do without you for a few more minutes."

Orli looked down at Karl's hand for a long moment...and time dragged, crawled, ceased to be. Karl wasn't even aware he was holding his breath until Orli looked up at him, lean body shifting a bit closer. "Alright."

One foot moved, stepping closer to Orli, bringing their bodies in contact again. It wasn't much, just barely chests brushing together, but Karl noted that Orli neither stepped back nor attempted to free his arm. His thumb rubbed smooth skin, his mind screamed at him. Shouldn't be doing this. Shouldn't be out here alone with Orli. "Viggo's a lucky man," Karl said, voice soft. He leaned in just a bit, eyes fastened on Orli's mouth.

"So is your Harry," Orli answered, his voice thick, swaying into Karl.

"You think so?" Heat radiated from Orli's body, soaking into Karl's. He leaned in more, his lips mere millimeters away from Orli's, so close he could smell the faint tinge of smoke that still clung to Orli's lips.

"Yeah..." A breathy sigh right up against Karl's lips, then they were touching...and it was like two live wires touching ends. The thunderbolt that crashed through him had him yanking Orli to him, plundering that soft mouth with his tongue.

Fuck, but the kid could kiss. A slick tongue slid over and around Karl's, twisting and writhing and teasing. The last time Karl had been kissed like this had been...had been...damned if he could remember. This was lightning and thunder and gale force winds all wrapped up in one messy package that was pressed tight against Karl's body. He groaned, his hands lifting to cup Orli's head, fingers gliding over a smooth scalp.

Orli's lithe body surged into his, slender fingers curved around his shoulders, and still the kiss continued as they changed angles, tried to crawl inside skin and bone. Karl was shaking, gasping, couldn't get enough of the taste of smoke and musk on his tongue. He plunged in again, needed more, got it when Orli returned the kiss, bruised his shoulders with strong hands, tongue slippery and warm against his.

"Fuck," Karl murmured when they parted. His breathing sounded harsh to his ears, and Orli's sounded no better. Sinfully dark eyes watched him through lowered lashes, fingers still gripped his shoulders, that wonderful, warm body still pressed against him. He watched Orli watching him and wondered what Orli's mouth would feel like on other parts of his body.

"That was..." Orli leaned back up into him, licked along his chin with a soft tongue. Tiny shivers wracked Karl's body as he stood there, hoping...and damning himself for hoping.

"Yeah..." Karl slid his hands down, rested them on Orli's shoulders, stroked Orli's throat with his thumbs. He trembled, felt Orli tremble against him, felt that soft tongue continue to lick along his chin, across his jaw, tease his earlobe before sliding down the side of his neck.

The kiss this time was lazy, slow...tongues swirled, moved in careless disarray. The heat of Orli's chest, mouth, thighs against his made Karl's head swim, his blood thicken into molasses.

When they finally parted, Karl discovered that Orli's arms were wrapped snugly around his waist, one hand beneath his shirt and stroking the base of his spine. "We should go back inside," he said, lips moving against Orli's jaw.

"Yeah," Orli replied, his hand sliding lower to brush the curve of Karl's ass, his lips lightly touching Karl's cheek.

"They're going to miss us," Karl added just before his tongue found Orli's once more, slipping around it, sliding over it in a languid exploration.

This time it was Orli who pulled away, sliding his hands across Karl's back, then off, in slow degrees. "We should get back." He bit his lower lip, ran his tongue along the bruised edges, and Karl had to dig nails into his palms to keep from reaching for Orli again. "I...um..." Orli shook his head, shrugged. "Hell, I don't know, to be honest."

"Neither do I." Karl shoved his hands deep into his pockets and watched Orli through half-lidded eyes. He wanted to grab Orli and push him to the ground, kiss him until neither one of them could breathe. He wanted to touch and taste and feel, wanted to sink himself inside Orli, lose himself in those dark eyes. And that knowledge shook him to the very core of his being.

"I'm with Viggo." Orli stated it like he'd just remembered himself. "I shouldn't have...we...fuck." Long fingers scraped over the bristle of Orli's scalp, cupped the back of his neck as he stared at Karl with an expression of horror and lust written across that achingly beautiful, expressive face.

Karl shrugged, fighting the strong urge to move closer, to touch Orli again. "And I'm with Harry...but I can't explain this..."

"We can't do this again."

Karl heard the regret in Orli's voice, wanted to erase it, erase everything, erase the world except for the two of them. This was madness. He'd just met the guy, and he was already willing to throw away the best relationship he'd ever had with a man he loved deeply. "No," he agreed, "we can't."

"I'm sorry. Not that we did it, but for..." Orli's voice trailed off.

"Yeah." Karl nodded, stepped back. His body turned just enough so that he was no longer facing Orli, but he continued to watch him. "I'm sorry, too."

Orli sighed, withdrew another cigarette from his battered pack with slightly shaking fingers. "I'll wait here a few more minutes."

"I'll go back inside." One hand started to lift, then stopped and those fingers curled into a fist before the hand dropped back to his side. Karl's eyes roamed over Orli's face, memorizing how it looked at that exact second, then he turned and began to walk towards the house.
