Orlando sighed and snuggled deeper into the warmth next to him. A slow smile spread across his face as he nuzzled his lover’s neck. The arm around him tightened and the throat under his lips vibrated with a sleepy moan. Never had he heard a more beautiful sound.

“Wake up, love, “ he said as he raised himself up to look down on his waking lover’s face. He gently brushed Viggo’s hair away from his eyes and felt his breath catch when he saw the love Viggo had for him shining in his now open eyes. He leaned down and kissed Viggo’s lips gently. “Happy birthday, love.”

Viggo grunted and swiftly flipped their positions. He began to kiss and lick his way down Orlando’s chest. When he reached Orlando’s navel he felt trembling hands lift his head up.

“If you do that again, we’ll never get out of bed.”

“It’s my birthday. I think I’m entitled to stay in bed if I want to.” He grinned cheekily up at his lover.

Orlando’s brow creased momentarily and his eyes dimmed. His smile faltered for but a second. Then once again he was the most radiant creature Viggo had ever laid eyes on. “Let’s at least take this to the shower, hm?”

Viggo just grinned and rolled off the younger man. “Race you.”

It had been months since the pair had gotten together. They both had agreed to let the past go and start anew. There were still days when Viggo thought it strange to top Orlando, but his young love had never complained. In fact, he seemed to take great pleasure in boasting Viggo’s prowess.

Dom had calmed down after Orlando had left that day. Elijah convinced him to apologize to both Orlando and Viggo. Both had accepted his apology right away, making Dom feel just a little worse about his outburst.

Throughout the summer they were all inseparable. The entire Fellowship spent the majority of their days together doing anything and everything. Every night Viggo and Orlando spent alone, locked in each other’s embrace.

Summer had turned into fall. Viggo spent many a day painting pictures of Orlando rolling around in piles of Autumn leaves. Orlando spent his time getting into leave wars with the hobbits. Their nights were still spent deep within one another.

Since that day they rediscovered each other, not a single night was spent apart.

Tonight was no exception. A huge party had been planned for everyone’s favorite Ranger.

The lights were all turned off, the only light was that of the candles on the cake as it was carried into the room.

“Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, FILTHY HUMAN! Happy birthday to you!”
The candles illuminated Viggo’s grin at his lover’s bellowing which drowned out everyone else’s song to Viggo. He reached over and clasped Orlando’s hand in his.

“Go on, then, make a wish! I’m hungry for some cake!” Dom promptly “oofed” when Lij elbowed him in the side.

Viggo closed his eyes took a deep breathe and held it for a few seconds. He let out his breath and blew out all but one candle.

Orlando laughed. “Can’t get enough breath to blow them all out in your old age, hm?”

“I left it on purpose. However many candles are left lit is how many boyfriends I have.”

“Huh? Where’d you come up with that?”

Viggo shrugged. “I dunno. It’s just something I do.” Viggo blew the last candle out and Ian turned the lights back on.

The cake was cut and everyone sat around talking and just having a good time in each other’s company. Orlando didn’t move from his position behind his love. He stood there with his hands on Viggo’s shoulders and just looked around the room. Everyone seemed so happy.

Then what was wrong with him? He’d had this nagging feeling in the back of his head since people began arriving for the party. Something just felt off. Each smile tossed his way only made the feeling of unease grow.

Employing all his skills as an actor, he tried to enjoy his lover’s party. No one made any comments if they could tell something was wrong. It was really late when the last of the guests kissed both Viggo and Orlando on the cheek and left. Viggo couldn’t hide a huge yawn as he walked off to the bathroom.

Orlando stood in the middle of the room. There were beer cans all over the place. Wrapping paper littered the floor. He bent down and began to clean up the mess. He heard Viggo call to him from their bedroom. He ignored the call and continued to clean. He lifted up once piece of wrapping paper to discover a broken bottle, probably left there by a hobbit. He picked up one of the pieces and turned it around in his hand.

A dull ache began to form in his chest. He rubbed his hand over the scar there, as if to relieve the slight pain. A sharp pain in his hand distracted him from the other pain. He looked down and saw he had gripped the glass too tightly. Blood was now trickling down his hand. He dropped the glass and stared at this hand.

The pain in his chest increased. He felt a lump rise in his throat. A tidal wave of emotion crashed over him. Despair. Loneliness. Anger. Fear. Hurt. Bitterness. Longing. Emptiness.

His head reeled from it. Images flashed through his head. Pain. Agony. Blood. Lots of blood. Coldness. Darkness. Falling. Arms around him. Tears on his face that were not his own.

He collapsed on the floor, a small whimper escaping his lips. It hurt. He clawed weakly at his chest. It felt like it was going to explode.

He jerked when he felt a hand rest on his shoulder. “Are you okay?” He looked up and saw nothing but concern and love in Viggo’s gray eyes.

He didn’t want to worry his love. Still, he had to swallow a few times to get rid of the lump in his throat. “Yeah. I uh cut my hand.” He held it out for inspection.

Viggo sighed in obvious relief. He pulled Orlando too his feet and led him to the bathroom. “Let’s get you cleaned up and head off to bed, hm?”

Orlando leaned against his shoulder. “Yeah. Sounds good.”

He woke in a cold sweat sometime during the night. He knew his strange dreams were not just dreams, but rather his memory finally returning. He looked over at Viggo. What had he done? Viggo had said the past didn’t matter anymore, but how could he say that? His actions since he woke up were not enough to make up for all he’d done in the past.

He slipped from the bed and into the shower. Viggo would wake soon without him there. He had to hurry.

Ring.

A dark haired woman poked her head around the corner and looked at the phone. She sighed and walked over to it. Didn’t people ever stop calling?

Ring.

The number of the caller ID was familiar though. A delicate hand reached down and picked up the phone.

Ri-

“Hello?” She frown. There nothing but breathing on the other end. “Hello?” she repeated.

“Mum?”

Her breath caught and she almost lost her grip on the phone. Her other hand came up to help support it. “Orlando?”

“Hi, Mum.”

“Oh, God, Orlando, how’re are you? We wanted to go to you, but your friends advised against it. They said you would contact us if you remembered. I was beginning to think you never would and that I would lose my son. Oh, Orlando.”

“Mum, please don’t cry. I would have called even if I never remembered.”

“But you do remember, don’t you.” It was not really a question.

“Yeah, I remember. I remember it all. Mum, would it be okay if I came home for say a month or so? I haven’t seen you or Sam in so long. I miss you both terribly.”

“Well of course you can! You come home and take as long as you need. Sam and I are both here for you.” She could hear his sigh of relief, probably due to the fact that she had not pressed him for details.

“Thanks, Mum. I’ll see you in a few days.” There was a slight pause. “I love you.”

“And I love you. Sam and I will be eagerly awaiting you. See you soon.” Tears streamed down her face as she hung up the phone. Her son was finally coming home after all this time. He remembered her again. However, he was definitely far from all right.
