Viggo slumped against the wall as the red ambulence lights faded into the distance. He'd wanted to go with the young man, but the paramedics refused. He wanted to rush to the hospital, but he found he had no energy. As he sank to the floor he tried to process the information that was thrown at him since he arrived at Orlando's apartment.
He'd had everything planned out. The hobbits were supposed to take Orlando out for an evening on the town. They were his best friends. Why hadn't they gone? He had planned to show up at 11 and if all went well, spend the night in the arms of the man he loved. He finally admitted to himself that he really did love Orlando. After all the time they spent apart, he found himself missing the warm smile, carefree attitude, and the relentless teasing personality that was Orlando Bloom. He'd lost it at the last two premiers he'd been to with his young costar. He wasn't sure what he would have done had Orlando actually gone to the other premiers.
It was the hardest thing in the world to pretend he'd forgotten what today was. He could just hear the disappointment in Orlando's voice. He could hear the tears that didn't fall. He'd wanted to rush to the man right then. But it had to be perfect. He just had to win Orlando back the right way.
Why did it go wrong?
Traffic jams had made him half an hour late. When no one answered his knocks, he thought for sure the man was still out partying. But then he'd heard the scream and the glass shattering. He tested the handle and was very greatful it wasn't locked. He'd rushed into the living room and halted. Orlando wasn't moving. He could hear the sobs.
"Orlando," he'd whispered, not wanting to startle the obviously upset man. "Orlando, what's wrong? Why didn't you answer the door? Where'd Elijah and Billy go?" He took a few steps forward. "What happened?"
The next words made his heart drop. He could just barely make them out through choaked sobs. "Viggo....shut up..."
Viggo's eyes widened in surprise. "But, Orl-"
"Go away, now." The sobs that had taken over Orlando now threatened to overtake Viggo. His chest constricted and it felt like he'd been punched in the stomach.
He watched Orlando waver. He was obviously about to tople over. He ignored the choaked words and rushed to his side. He caught him and cradled him to his chest. Orlando was shaking now. He was trying to speak but Viggo silenced him. That was when he noticed that large shard of glass protruding from Orlando's chest. "Oh Orlando, what have you done?"
After a brief moment of panic he called 911. Within minutes an ambulence had arrived and they began to take care of Orlando. Viggo prayed that the young man had merely passed out and was not dead. The paramedics assured him the man was not dead.
"But he's going to be alright though, right?" Despair was begining to consume him.
"Sir, it's really too soon to say," the paramedic said patiently.
"Too soon? He could be dead at any moment, and it's too soon to tell?" Viggo knew he shouldn't raise his voice at the paramedic, but the man was getting on his nerves.
"Well if he does die, then we'll know he wasn't okay, now won't we." With that snide comment the man climbed into the ambulence and sped away.
Viggo thought he should be mad at that last remark, but he was just too worn out.
What was he going to do now? He shook his head and closed his eyes, trying to concentrate on something other than the sight of all the blood flowing from Orlando. He pulled his cell phone out and quickly punched in Elijah's number.
After the second ring he picked up.
"Elwood, talk to me."
"Elijah, it's Viggo..."
"Oh hey, man! We were just talking about you. Me and the rest of the hobbits that is. You've gotta be in on our plans for Orli, the poor guy." Elijah chuckled. "It's going to be great! See, we've all "forgotten" his birthday, right? Well, that's because-"
"Lij, shut up for a second. Listen to me. It's about Orlando!" Normally Elijah's chatter would be endearing. Right now it was just annoying.
"Orlando? Huh? What happened?" Lij sounded a bit worried. Viggo could hear the other guys in the background grow quiet and shuffle closer to the phone. "Come on, Vig, what's wrong?"
"It's Orlando. I went to his place a little while ago, to say happy birthday and all. Well actually I'm still at his place, but he's not. He was. But now he's gone. And he may actually be gone gone. I just-"
"Whoa! Slow down there Vig. Calmly please, what happened to Orlando?"
Viggo took a deep breath. "He wouldn't answer his door, but I heard a scream and glass breaking so I went in anyway. I found him in there. He fell over and he had this huge piece of glass sticking out of his chest. When the ambulance arrived, Orlando was limp and barely breathing. He could be dead by now!"
The silence on the other end was almost deafening.
"Is he... going to be okay?" Lij was close to tears. Viggo couldn't keep his own from falling.
"I don't know, Lij. He was pretty bad. I thought he was supposed to be with you guys. What happened?" He tried to keep the accusations out of his voice.
"Ah, yes... well... We decided to have a little fun with Orli. We all decided we were going to "forget" his birthday, make him squirm a bit, you know? We were just planning his birthday party for... uh, later today. We were going to call you earlier and make sure you didn't ruin our surprise. We even got his mom and sister in on it. They were going to fly in, but their flight was delayed. They may not make it now."
"YOU WHAT???" Viggo was positively livid. "You all know how much days like this mean to Orlando! You know how he hates being alone even on normal days! Playing a joke is one thing, but to purposely forget his birthday of all days? You idiots!!" Things made more sense now. That explained the alcohol and the sobs then.
"Oh, and you're blameless?? What about you? Why weren't you with him? Why didn't you go see him earlier? Yell at us, will you... What's your excuse?" Lij was furious at him.
Before Viggo could think of a reply, the phone was taken out of Elijah's hand. Ian's voice took the place of Lij's. "Now, now. This is not the time to be passing the blame off on each other. We are ALL at fault in this. What we need to do now is not fight with one another. We need to go to the hospital and just wait. That's all we can do for now. Go to him and wait. It's all up to him now."
