Second Best
Elijah doesn’t like settling for second best. He never has done, and doesn’t plan on doing it in the future. Why would you settle for something less than your standards, your expectations? Something, or someone, who wasn’t what you wanted most in the world? He learnt this from an early age, and although it got him into some difficulty in the past, it was part of him, his personality, and he wasn’t going to change it. When he discovered Dominic was once again single, Elijah had grasped the opportunity with both hands; Elijah wouldn’t settle for second best this time.
Dominic had to settle for second best. He made the biggest mistake of his life, not telling Billy how he felt, how he feels about him, and now is paying for it. Dominic lost his opportunity to win, to take first prize, and now he’s left with less-than-perfect, despite what everyone thinks. Opportunities came and went with the wind, but Dominic never had the courage to go after what he really wanted; was there too much at stake? But he settled, settled for something that was easy, simple, someone that almost took away the agony of taking second best. Almost.
Billy is used to settling for second best. He knows it too. He knows that he is afraid to take risks, despite what he may gain. He knows that he can blame no one but himself. Billy often wonders if Orlando knows he’s only second best to him. Maybe. Maybe not. It always seems odd to Billy, thinking of Orlando as second best. He’s talented, gorgeous, a perfect gentleman. Anyone would jump at the chance to be with him…maybe that’s why Billy did. At least he was settling for a second best he could love, even if he wasn’t Dom.
Orlando doesn’t know he settled for second best. When Orlando sees something he wants, he goes for it. Both feet first. In at the deep end. Passion. Obsession. Call it what you want. When Orlando gets his eye on something, or someone, his vision beyond it, or them, is blurred. He’s unable to see endless possibilities life holds for him, experiences and people life puts before him, there for the taking. It was the same with Billy; he had fallen hard and fallen fast, but there, waiting in the wings, was someone who could have been far from second best.
Viggo doesn’t want to settle for second best. It’s the competitive streak in him, that doesn’t venture frequently into the open. Desire and love so strong that make it impossible for him to give up. He adores everything about Orlando; his quirks, his flaws, his imperfections. The little things that no one knows, Viggo knows; things no one sees, Viggo sees; things no one notices, Viggo notices. Why? Viggo always believed it was because Orlando allowed him to know, see, notice. This grain of hope is what Viggo clings to, believing that he may not have to accept second best.
