Billy leaves the club's loo wiping his hands on the jeans he is wearing, which actually might be Dom's, now that he thinks about it. Billy smiles hazily and thinks, let's see what Dom keeps close to his—heart. He leans against the vibrating wall, digs his hands deep into pockets that are not his, and finds: a keyring with no key on it, a Sharpie, a lollipop wrapper, some change and a bead bracelet that he himself gave Dom - what? A year ago? Back in Wellington, though, that’s for sure. Billy sniffs with surprise and thinks, Oh, Dommie; and after thumbing the bracelet for a moment, stumbles through dense basslines back to their table, where Dom is sitting with his heel on the edge of his chair, thigh snug against his chest, telling Elijah some yarn, obscene, probably, judging by the faint flush on the wee one's cheeks, and the way he's hunched forward over his ashtray.

***

Elijah is sitting on the bed (Billy's home, reached by way of one distinctly unpleasant taxi ride, with nausea and dizziness and a sneering driver, whose back Dom kneed through the seat, his face all innocence), one foot tucked under himself and the other pigeon-toed on the floor; a steadily burning cigarette in his fingers, half-raised towards his mouth and forgotten. Elijah's a bit woozy – alright, quite woozy by now, uncountable shots crowding in his bloodstream – and he's gaping at Dom, who has an arm around Billy's neck and is almost hanging from him, dragging him down, knees buckling under the weight of a guffaw. Elijah watches Billy's crinkled eyes, blurred with alcohol and tears of laughter, and Dom's pliant fingers, silver glittering in the dim light; their bodies aligned with easy familiarity, and for support. Elijah follows the slide of Dom's hip against Billy's thigh as Dom doubles up, and wonders hazily whether Billy is as oblivious as he seems. Elijah is almost thankful when his cigarette burns down to his fingers and he can squeak and curse and make them stop that, and make himself stop looking.

***

Dom belches loudly when they're standing on Billy's driveway in the warm, middle-of-the-night wind, waiting for the taxi to roll slowly their way. 'Oh, sweet, Monaghan', says Elijah, chuckling. Dom puts a hand on his belly and answers in, what he hopes, is a very dignified voice: 'A sure sign that good fun's been had'. He whips his head around, too fast, too fast, careful there, to see that Billy and Elijah are nodding solemnly, mouths pressed tight against laughter.

The taxi grinds to a halt and Dom opens the door saying, 'Sleep well then, you bums', and hears Elijah, 'Yeah, you too, and thanks', and Billy, affectionately, 'Wanker'.

He slides incongruously to the backseat of the taxi and looks at them once more, only to have his glance hit emptiness. Lij has ducked his head tiredly, watching his fingers plucking at the hem of Billy's shirt, and Billy is already turning to walk Lij back to the house. The taxi lurches slowly forward and Dom's field of vision tilts sideways as he rests his temple against the clammy leather.
