Crushed Rubies-Prologue
“Is my timing that flawed,
our respect run so dry?
Yet there's still this appeal
That we've kept through
our lives
Love, love will tear us apart again”-Joy Division
The waning light peeking through the curtains wake Billy up. Even though he hates being awake so early, he doesn’t want to go back to sleep.
Lately, his past has been haunting him through his dreams and he’s just..tired of it all.
He sighed and rubbed at his eyes. Might as well get up now. After all he did promise Sean he was going to be back at least at the end of the week.
He flopped back down on the bed and stared at the ceiling, contemplating the pros and cons of breaking his promise and just staying here, in this bleak and quiet city forever.
He stayed like that, staring at the painted ceiling until his cell rang.
Growling, he picked it up and answered it with an unintelligible mumble.
“You’re on your way?”
The voice was cool, faintly metallic and even more commanding than usual.
Billy ran his hand through his greasy hair before framing a reply.
“After I shower, yeah.” he replied flatly.
A ghost of a laugh was all the reply he got before the line went dead.
He turned the phone off and placed it on the beside table before getting up and moving to the shower.
Fuck.

Dom stuck the cigarette in his mouth and looked up at the sky.
It was all nice and dark grey, with a silver edging to the clouds indicating more rain was to come.
“Fucken hell. Even the bloody weather hates me!”
Dom sighed, shaking his head before he finally lit his cigarette, all the while hoping that the rain would hold off just long enough for him to finish his smoke.
Taking a deep drag, he looked around the small greyhound stop. Not that he really cared about the area, it was just something to pass the time while he inhaled more nicotine and killed his lungs.
Missoula was the same as the other shitty stops: barren, desolate, cold. A convenience store and a petrol bar were the only two buildings in the empty plain.
Dom sighed. It really was gonna be as shitty as his friend said.
He shook his head and pushed the thought out of his mind. He’d rather have the shittiness of a small town view than be stuck in freaking Red Deer for the rest of his miserable life.
He shook his head again and took another drag of his smoke, this time staring at the gravel on the ground as if it was going to give him the secret of the universe if he stared hard enough.
So intent was he on stripping it of his secrets that he missed the pair of black combats with black electrical tape wound around them that suddenly appeared in his view.
It wasn’t until he heard an accented voice ask: “Pardon me, mate. You gotta light?” That his mind snapped out of its reveire.
“Uh? Yeah. Here.” He dug around in his pockets, located his lighter and looked up.
“Thanks man.” Dom blinked at the owner of the voice.
Although he wasn’t much to look at, there was something about the deceptively normal man before him. He wasn’t sure what it was, but Dom was getting glimpses of it from the strangers graceful, almost practised movements and the too light yellow tinge that his green eyes got when the light hit them in a specific way.
The man nodded to him, handed him his lighter and moved away to finish his smoke alone.
Dom watched him walk away, feeling a bit crushed and not understanding why at the same time.
He watched the other man smoke ever so casually for several minutes before he caught himself doing it.
“Sha.” he muttered and turned away to finish his own smoke, taking quick, almost angry puffs from the cigarette as he tried to banish the after images of the strangers eyes and the way that the ripped up jean jacket and military trousers clung to his slim body.
“Not listening..not listening...” He told his mind as he took that last puff before dropping the butt and crushing it under the rubber sole of his pumas trainer before going back to the bus.

Billy tried not to laugh at the kid that given him the light. It was just too amusing how the child’s emotions literally oozed off of him. He could taste them all as clearly and sharply as wind: Confusion, annoyance and the beginnings of lust that the body was well aware of, but not the mind.
If he hadn’t been involved so much with Sean and the others, he would probably give in to that sharp little voice in the corner of his mind practically begging for him to toy around with the boy.
It would be fun, that he knew from years and years of practise.
Tasting the flesh, taking all his desires from it while the soul remained pure and untouched...
His left hand twitched as the though trailed off into nothingness.
“The boy is convenient..and it’s not like you’ve fed today” the voice spoke. “It’s not like anyone will know.”
His fingers clenched.
It was getting hard to resist that voice.
He dug his fingernails into his palm as deeply as he could and closed his eyes...
Only to see a fleeting memory of storm-grey eyes.
“Okay. Break’s over, we’re heading off now. Everyone board the bus and for those of you joining us on this part, present your tickets as you board.”
Billy’s eyes snapped open and he breathed in a ragged breath of relief.
The spell was broken.
Ignoring the broken skin, he picked up his ratty rucksack and walked to the bus.

Dom settled down on the seat, moving here and there to get more comfortable. As he settled in, he idly watched as the new passengers got on, scouting the people for someone even mildly interesting to break up the boredom of the long ride.
He watched a middle aged woman and her daughter get on. A soldier and...the guy from outside.
Dom blinked and sat up to get a better look.
Yep. It was him. The ratty jean jacket, T-shirt and khaki trousers gave him away.
Dom grinned to himself.
Maybe this ride isn’t gonna suck after all.
