Dominic sat on the edge of seat, hands clasped together. His long slender fingers fiddled mindlessly with the silver bands of jewelry gracing his hands. He tried to not stare at the figure across the room, but found himself doing so regardless.

He took a deep breath and lowered his gaze again to his hands. His ale had gone warm long before and he hadn’t noticed. His mind had been focused  elsewhere all evening. He had forgotten about everything else that had brought him to the pub that evening. The need for a good stiff drink, The need to let loose. The need to be amongst people. But all was forgotten. All, that is, but the person before him.

Dom had yet to find the courage to have the talk. He usually had no problems talking to people. He could usually start with a joke or some other amusing antidote. Tonight was different. He had knots in his stomach and thoughts raced his mind. He felt he was a kid again, wanting to ask the prettiest girl at the party to dance.

Dom watched him at the bar as he swayed his hips gently to the music coming from the jukebox. Dom’s eyes were riveted to the hypnotizing movement. Riveted as they bumped along the sea of people making their way towards him. A fresh drink in each hand. Sipping from each to make them level. Hips still swaying to the music with each step that brought them closer to him.

Dom never felt afraid to talk them before. As a matter of fact, they usually had great conversations without so much as trying. It was an instant connection. Even after years of being friends, they always found something new and amusing to talk about.  Why should he be afraid now?

He did know the why, really. Tonight he resolved to profess his love. He doesn’t know exactly when it happened, but he fell in love. He tried to fight it. Tried to tell himself that he was a fool for thinking this way. He tried to convince his mind that it was not love, not that kind anyway.

With each step he made, Dom's heart raced and jumped into his throat. He swallowed hard and tried to avoid eye contact. He felt his palms sweat. He tasted the bitter warm ale that had lingered on his tongue. He realized that his left knee had been bouncing from nervous energy for goodness knows how long now. Soon he was face to face with him.

He set the drinks down on the table and sat down across from him. He lifted his drink to his lips and paused. He cocked his head and looked at him suspiciously.

“Are you ok? You look pale.”

Dominic suddenly felt as though he would explode. It was now or never.

Dom lifted his glass and smiled, “Never better mate, never better.”
