Elijah has not seen Dominic in over a month when he appears at Elijah's door step in New York. He walks in carrying a suitcase and drops it on Elijah's living room floor and doesn't ask anything about staying. Instead he grins at Elijah and walks over to the fridge grabs a beer and sits on the couch as if he's done it almost every day. Elijah's known Dominic and knows when not to ask questions and when to and this definitely isn't the time. So he sits next to Dominic and tries to steal the channel changer he has claimed suddenly.

They don't talk until Dominic is slipping into Elijah's bed at night. Elijah's bed creases and he welcomes the warm feeling Dom sends against his side.

"I've missed you Lighe."

Elijah rolls over so he's backs to Dominic. He knows what's coming next and he doesn't want to hear it. He's too weak when Dominic misses him.

"I'm sorry about what happened before. You know I just want to be with you."

Elijah rolls back over and even thou he can't see Dominic in the darkness he's weakened by his eyes. Dominic's hands are creeping towards Elijah's waste and Elijah doesn't try to stop him.

"Elijah."

His name rolls over Dominic's tongue and slides through him. "I've missed you so much Elijah."

Dominic's hands are making their best moves and Elijah almost believes him again.

"Not tonight."

Elijah rolls back over and after a minute he feels a lift in the bed and he turns around to see Dominic leaving the room.

---

Summers in New Zealand are something Elijah will never be able to forget. There were days when the sun's rays would feel like they could pierce right through you. Elijah would sit on a hill when they weren't filming and let the sun press against his skin. The beads of sweat would rolls down his nose and send a salty gift over his lips. That's when Dominic would arrive and Elijah would feel only hotter.

Dominic would sit besides him with an apple he'd taken from the lunch room. Elijah would watch Dominic bite into the apple that was so fresh the juices with stick to his lips and trail down Dominic's chin. He'd never wipe them away and Elijah would lick his lips wanting to taste the apple against Dominic's mouth. Just watching Dominic with the apple, Elijah's fingers would make their way into his mouth and he'd taste dirt instead of apple.

Elijah used to wonder if Dominic knew all along what he was doing to him as he ate his apple in the sun. Elijah's eyes were squinted by the sun so when he turned to Dominic he saw him in a hazed light that hide the dirt on his face. Dominic would turn one day and Elijah would be staring into his eyes. He'd be wondering if he could say anything that would stop him from kissing Dominic.

"I.."

It was hard to finish anything that could have saved him when Dominic's lips were on his and he finally tasted the apple he'd been waiting for. And it tasted sweeter then he could have imagined.

---

Elijah watches Dominic search through his fridge. A week had crept past him and Dominic had not returned to Elijah's bed. Elijah sits with his fingers in his mouth and the sun's rays breaking through the window. Elijah's eyes squint as Dominic walks back into the kitchen with an apple in his hand. Elijah suddenly thinks of Snow White. He wonders if he takes the apple from Dominic and bites it, if he'd fall into a deep sleep. That maybe Dominic was really a wicked witch in disguise trying to steal whatever Elijah had.

But Elijah isn't doing anything more then looking at Dominic as he eats the apple on the couch besides him. The apple's juices dribble down Dominic's chin and Elijah knows he's playing by old tricks now. But before Elijah can say anything Dominic wipes his chin and turns to Elijah.

"Apples here don't nearly taste as sweet."

"They never taste the same as they used to."

Dominic puts the apple on Elijah's table and nods. "I miss the way they used to taste."

Elijah wants to agree but he knows Dominic isn't talking about apples. "You've tasted to many to remember what the original tastes like Dominic."

Elijah gets up and takes the apple from the table and bites into. Dominic stares at him and Elijah licks the juice from his lips.

"It tastes just as sweet to me as it's ever had."

Elijah walks in the kitchen and Dominic stays on the couch staring into the broken sun light from the window.

--

The sun in New Zealand gave Dominic's arms a tan and when Elijah would kiss his shoulder he'd watch the skin go from white back to the tan. Dominic's skin always felt so warm against Elijah's hands and mouth.

"Mmm Elijah someone's at the door."

Elijah hadn't noticed the knocking until Dominic's voice drew him away.

"Let them knock."

He snaked his tongue across Dominic's neck and looked up to his eyes. Dominic sighed and Elijah felt him squirm beneath him on the couch.

"You're spoiled, Elijah. I have to get the door."

Elijah leaned back and let Dominic get up from the couch and walk to the door. His eyes followed Dominic and he tried to keep his heart from leaving too. There was something different in the way Dominic started acting as the days rolled on. He couldn't help but to think that Dominic was right when he said Elijah was spoiled.

"Elijah?" Elijah's mind broke from it's reverie and looked up. "Billy's here."

Elijah smiled as Billy appeared from behind Dominic and put his arm around Dominic's shoulder. "I heard you two were alone this weekend, thought I'd come by." Elijah smiled. "Oh and Dom," Billy said holding the bag that was in his hand to Dominic. "You said you were out of apples, I've brought you some."

Elijah's heart dropped and his smile turned to competition and he wondered if apples would ever taste the same again.

---

Elijah wonders how Dominic can smile like he does. Walk into Elijah's life another a month of not talking to him and smile like he'd done nothing wrong. Elijah's done everything he could to forget the taste of Dominic's skin but the thoughts still invade his dreams. Dominic is temptation and Elijah's smoking more then he's been in months. He can't speak the way he used to when Dominic wasn't there, he feels suffocated. He wonders how Dominic can sit on the couch and drink coffee and not say a word about the past. When all the past seems to do is haunt Elijah like a ghost.

"You've slept with Billy."

Elijah doesn't even know if he's asking Dominic or telling him.

"You know that."

"Yeah I do."

"Why are you bring back water under the bridge?"

"Why'd you come back?"

"I've missed you Elijah and I've said I'm sorry."

Elijah doesn't look at Dominic but keeps his eyes to the TV in front of them. He's worried if he'll look he'll never make it out alive. "I wish I could be like you."

"What?"

"I wish I could forget about the past and move on like it's nothing at all. I wish I could walk back into a life that I've stolen and look for more things to steal. That's all I am. Billy threw you out and I'm the next one on the rounds. I wish I was like you but the color of my heart isn't black."

Dominic gets up and walks out the door and Elijah isn't sure if he'd be back but Elijah suddenly feels like he can breath a lot better.

--

Elijah isn't really sleeping when he feels Dominic in the bed besides him. He's mind is floating somewhere between dream and reality but he knows the touch do Dominic's hand on his stomach is as real as it comes. It's only been a few days and Elijah wonders where Dominic had spent them.

"You're right. I shouldn't have slept with Billy while I was with you. You're always right. I'm wrong. Forgive me."

Elijah's sure he wasn't asking. "What makes this different?"

"I don't know Elijah but it just is."

Dominic's eyes are burning a hole into Elijah's face and he finally turns to met them. "You're not the victim Dominic, stop acting like one."

"I'm sorry."

Elijah can't believe what he's feeling and tries to look away but there's something that in Dominic's eyes that keeps him looking. "You've done me nothing but no good."

Elijah can't tell Dominic's starting to move closer but he knows he does when he's lips are inches away. Elijah tries to forgot what Dominic's awkward untouchable lips feel like but he's too mixed up in the taste of apples and the feel of Dominic's hands on his stomach.

Elijah leans him and their lips met and Elijah wonders if there is any good in what he's just done.

--

It's a cruel world, Elijah has found out. He's cigarette dangles off the edge of his lips and his hands play with the lighter. Dominic's shifting through the kitchen again looking for what's left. Elijah watches Dominic move and wonder if he's a glorious waste of time. He knows there is no safety left in sharing his bed and he notices that Dominic's finally unpacked. Elijah pretends Dominic's just an excuse now, that he just needs someone to share the bed with to keep the boogy monsters at bay. But Elijah really knows, as Dominic walks into the kitchen with a green apple now, that Dominic's really the evil witch trying to steal away whatever Elijah holds. But the juices from the apple fall down Dominic's chin and Elijah's there licking them off before Dominic can wipe them away. And Elijah tastes what New Zealand tastes like.

It's a cruel world but Elijah's a lucky boy.
