“Dom, there’s this party…”

Pause.

“Wait, no, okay… Dom, you busy after class? I’ve been trying to figure out what Eco’s trying to say, and I thought maybe…”

Pause, again.

“Crap, this is never going to work.”

Elijah leaned against the wall and tilted his head back with a sigh. Only days now till the end of the term, and the crush he’d had since September was as strong as ever. Crush, he insisted fiercely to himself, hand involuntarily twitching to his pocket, where a small slip of paper with a line of poetry sat restlessly. Only days now, he continued mentally, till he’d have no more reason to ever see his TA again.

Only days to do something about it.

Or just keep on wanking quietly, alone, to the remembered sound of literary theory being explained to him in an English accent. Or a Scottish one.

“Don’t go there, Wood,” he muttered to himself. “Bad enough you want to jump your TA’s bones, let’s not even contemplate the prof.”

He rolled until his right shoulder rested against the wall, and stared balefully at the colorfully decorated door ahead. All three TAs who shared the office had added their own personal touch to the collage. Elijah had the door memorized, he’d stood nervously in front of it often enough, trying to calm his nerves before knocking. Sometimes, on his visits to the humanities building, Elijah had been obliged to wait outside Dominic's office while the TA spoke with another student. Ever-considerate of his students, Dominic daily wrote a new phrase on the whiteboard which adorned the office door. Today’s quote, he could see, said “Food for thought is good, food for the TA is better.”

Elijah smiled, nearly involuntarily. With a sigh, he pulled himself upright. “Now or never, kid,” he swore under his breath, and crossed the remaining distance to his objective. It was when he reached the door that he heard faint sounds. Puzzled, he pressed his hand to the door, and leaned forward to hear better.

Laughter.

Dominic wasn’t alone.

Elijah stepped back with a resigned sigh, crouching down to pull out some reading material. Might as well begin some revision for exams, he thought. He hadn’t managed to tune out the voices, however, and heard the words quite clearly.

“Bastard!”

Elijah’s head snapped up. Dominic’s voice, but mirthful rather than angry.

“You know perfectly well that the backs of my knees are ticklish!”

He had to strain slightly to hear the reply, but he leaned his ear against the door, and caught a fragment.

“…you think I did it, love?” Then there was a slap, and more laughter.

“Keep your hands off me, you wee Scottish bastard!”

“Ha, you weren’t saying I was so wee last night, if I recall.”

Elijah closed his eyes and took a very careful breath. Something in his chest crumpled ever so slightly, and he had to sit a moment longer before he could exhale, then inhale again. The next inhalation shuddered a little, but he managed to stand anyway.
He fingered the paper in his pocket, the lines about love in secret tinny compared to the sounds behind him, more laughter curling up from the crack under the door.

He dropped the paper in the garbage bin, next to an apple core, and walked away.

All bins have apple cores in them. Even if you don't see people eating apples.

Poor ickle Elijah. ;.; I vote for a Dombillijah follow-up, to make him feel ...included! ^^ Or, you know, not, since fic writing isn't a democracy.

Really, though, this was lovely. Short and sweet, and poor dear hopeful Elijah. :\
