Takes place the morning after Part Eight.
Standing at the front of the conference room, Billy looked around with wide eyes. Most of the men there he recognized, though some he had never seen before. It appeared that some of the lesser-active Sigma alumni had turned up for his hearing as well.
They all stared at him, speaking to each other in muffled tones. It was fucking humiliating.
This entire situation was humiliating. Being called reprimanded for his love life – his sex life –the whole thing made Billy cringe.
He took an empty seat at the end of the long conference table, which he assumed was reserved for him. Minutes later the Dean of Students Dr. Fillmore, came in, taking his own seat at the head of the table.
“Mr. Boyd, I have to say that this meeting is both unexpected and inconvenient. I have three other meetings this afternoon, and I don’t intend to draw this one out. I assume we all know why we’re here?” He raised his eyebrows at Billy.
Billy took the hint and stood, wincing slightly at the pain in his thighs and backside. The pain made him grin inappropriately and he coughed to cover it up.
“Yes, sir.”
“I’d also like to say,” Dr. Fillmore went on, “that while some of us here may have very strong opinions about the matter at hand, this hearing will be conducted professionally and not emotionally, understood?” He looked first at Billy again, but also made a meaningful glance around the room. “Alright then. So, it has come to the attention of the Board that you have violated the rules of your position as House Monitor, Mr. Boyd. Do you care to explain yourself?”
And Billy did explain, to the best of his ability. He explained that he hadn’t intended for anything like this to happen between him and any of the Sigmas and, in fact, how he had fought against it in the beginning. “But, as many of you may be lucky enough to know, love sometimes takes a hold of your actions and leads you where your common sense would rather not go.”
This remark earned a few smiles from the group, which encouraged Billy to continue, despite his shaking hands and voice. As he went on, though, he wasn’t oblivious to the number of steely glares he was receiving.
“I don’t intend on apologizing for falling in love,” Billy finally concluded. “Meeting Dominic has been one of the best things that’s ever happened to me, and I’m not sorry for it. However, I realize I’ve broken your trust, and I’m prepared to agree with the actions that you now see fit.”
He exhaled, just realizing that he had been speaking and holding his breath at the same time, and looked around the room for any indication of what was to come. He met eyes with Mr. Anderson, who smiled slightly at him in reassurance. Billy managed a small smile back before lowering his gaze and biting his bottom lip.
He was proud of the things he had said. He’d been both honest and professional, without once disrespecting his relationship with Dominic. He figured the Board would do enough of that for the both of them. His hands, though, were clutching the sides of his chair so tightly that his knuckles were white. He loosened his grip and hoped that no one noticed how tense he was.
Dr. Fillmore spoke again, breaking the silence. “Thank you Mr. Boyd. I’d like you to please wait outside while we discuss what actions to take. We’ll call you in when we’re through.”
Billy nodded and left the room, taking a seat in the outside hallway. And he waited. Waited for what felt like hours. He tried not to think about what was going to happen next or dwell on the fact that, right now, some of them were undoubtedly being cruel. He tried not to dwell on the fact that if he had been caught with some young sorority girl, none of this would be happening.
There was no sense in wasting his anger, Billy decided. Regardless of the real reasons behind it, he had broken the rules of his position. There was no logical way to fight this now.
He sighed, defeated, and allowed his thoughts to drift to Dom. The way he smelled, like woods, but also like papaya shampoo, Billy thought with a smile. No matter how much Billy teased Dom about that shampoo, he had to admit that he loved it. It smelled exotic and foreign and sweet, just like Dominic himself.
Billy thought about the way Dom tasted, how soft his skin was beneath his own lips and tongue. How when they kissed after tea, Dom tasted of peppermint and honey, and when they kissed after a long night at the pub, he tasted of smoke and Guinness. That was how Dom had tasted the first time they’d kissed and Billy would never forget it.
He had just moved onto the way Dom felt when a tap on his shoulder broke Billy from his reverie. It was Mr. Anderson.
“We’re ready for you, Billy.”
Once back inside, Billy didn’t think much at all. He stared mutely, numbly, at the group of men while the Dean told him that they had all agreed that this shouldn’t be made into a big deal. For Dominic’s own good, and for the good of the Sigma reputation, actions were to be taken swiftly and quietly. Billy would be moved out of the house by Friday night.
Today was Thursday.
“Sir, forgive me, but I’ve nowhere to go.”
“Forgive me Mr. Boyd, but I suppose you should have considered that before your recent behavior.”
Billy looked down at his toes, fists clenching and unclenching at his sides in both nervousness and anger.
“I’m sorry, young man, but this is our decision. No further actions will be taken, but I do hope you’ve learned something from this experience. I wish you luck in your future endeavors.”
With that, Dr. Fillmore nodded and left the room. As the rest of the men slowly trickled out, Billy stood firmly in place. He wasn’t quite sure his legs would carry him just yet.
He had to leave. And find a place to live. And a new job. By tomorrow.
What the fuck was he going to do?
Mr. Anderson’s hand landed again on his shoulder. “Billy?”
Billy looked up, biting his lip to fight the threatening tears. He didn’t say anything, so Mr. Anderson spoke again.
“I’m doing this because I know you’re a good man, Bill.” He took a deep breath. “You can stay with me until you find a new job and an apartment, ok? But know this is temporary, and don’t tell people. I don’t need certain members of the Board knowing, they’ll just cause more trouble.”
Billy was stunned. “Seriously? Oh my god, thank you Mr. Anderson! That’s just – wow, thank you.” He grabbed Mr. Anderson’s hand and shook it. “I’m sorry sir, I just – that means a lot, sir.”
“You don’t have to ‘sir’ me anymore, Bill. Call me Charles. And no more apologies. You’ve been punished enough, I think.”
Billy smiled and nodded. “I have to go see Dominic. He’s probably frantic.”
Mr. Anderson – Charles – frowned. “Billy, if I might give you some advice?”
Billy stopped and sat back down. Far be it from him to disrespect the man who just prevented him from being homeless.
“I think you should stop seeing Dominic.”
And Billy stood up again, just as quick. “What?”
“There was a lot of talk in there, son, and most of it wasn’t very understanding. You got off easy, considering. Dominic’s young and has a lot at stake – I understand he’s pre-law?”
Billy nodded.
“It would be in his best interests to be far from controversy at this time then, wouldn’t it?”
Billy nodded again, the lump reappearing in his throat and double the size.
“Just think about how your feelings might affect his goals. The men today, those are the kind of men who will decide Dominic’s future. You don’t want him to be judged as harshly as you’ve been, do you?” He paused. “Think about it. I’ll see you tomorrow then.”
And he was gone, leaving Billy once again mute, numb and glued to the floor.
End Part Nine.
