Chapter 9
“Why can’t he understand? It’s unacceptable for someone of his standing…especially someone of our family, to be running around with…with peasants!” Viggo threw another coat down carelessly, “Why can’t Elijah just accept that? Thousands would kill to be in his place, yet he acts as if it means nothing!”
“You speak as if you don’t know him,” Sean answered as he sat by the window, smiling as he saw a lovely dark-haired servant walk through the gardens, “Elijah can’t be kept in a cage, Viggo. It would be a sad waste of his spirit.”
“Elijah isn’t a bird, Sean. He is a lord, and one of royal blood! He has to act like one! He has honor to uphold!”
“Very fitting for you to talk about honor after where I found you last night Viggo,” Sean said casually, jumping out of his seat before Viggo could hit him with a pair of trousers.
“I don’t believe you,” Viggo said as he tried to think of something else, as he tried to convince himself of his innocence, “It must have been a dream…you know I would never do that!”
“It wasn’t a dream,” Sean reassured him, “In fact, as you were lying on the bridge, I distinctly remember hearing you cursing and demanding for your whore. And then there’s that,” Sean said, pointing to the black eye that still graced Viggo’s face.
“Sean, you’re making this stay even worse.” Viggo fell on the bed, completely exhausted and frustrated, “…I don’t know what to do.”
“About what? You’re engaged to Olivia. She’s your future wife, what else is there?”
Viggo remained silent, closing his eyes as he tried to remember last night. His hands twitched as he recalled soft, thick hair and the sensational warmth of young skin against his. Whatever it was he was doing, he definately liked it...until his partner started to struggle desperately beneath him.
His eyes flew open with the memories of furious kisses and wandering caresses, of unwilling lips and muffled screams. No! He couldn’t have done such a thing! Did he? Did he really force himself on another? His pride dissolved as guilt and horror rushed into his heart. He searched deep with his memory, but he couldn’t find the face. Even the face of his …‘victim’…hid from him, refusing to reveal itself even in his memories.
“I don’t know what to do…” Viggo repeated weakly, “Sean, I’m trying so hard to find a way…but I…” He couldn’t finish as his mind raced with dark half-formed memories. How could he face his future wife, when this faceless stranger wouldn’t leave his thoughts? When guilt and shame wrecked him?
Inside, the lord knew that he wouldn’t be at peace until he found out if he really did…if he really did violate someone against their will. If he only knew what really happened! Had the stranger managed to get away before Sean found him alone? Or had he ravished the stranger, and left him bleeding and torn? No…he couldn’t have! He wasn’t a flawless man by any definition, but he was no rapist!
“Viggo?” Sean said, his voice suddenly kinder. Sean was one of the rare few who could speak so boldly and truthfully to his cousin, but he was also among the few to ever see his fears and insecurities, “Viggo…I meant no disrespect…Olivia...”
“Isn’t the problem right now.” Viggo finished. It was the faceless stranger on the bridge, pressed against him…
“Isn’t the problem? Viggo, you’ve been dreading this visit for years, and now she’s no problem?”
“Sean, I never said she was a problem to begin with.”
“You never said it, but I could sense it…You don’t want this engagement do you?”
“I don’t have a choice!” Viggo shouted as he jumped up, pacing around the room, running his hands through his hair, “It’s not about what I want. This is about an agreement our family made with hers! There’s no sense in this.” Viggo marched back to his closet, pushing clothes out of way, “There’s no sense in fighting fate…I must marry the child of Lord Hugo and Lady Cate, no matter what….” Viggo pushed back the distant screams from his memory. He couldn’t think about that last night, at least not for tonight…not during his fiancé’s birthday.
“You may say that, but I believe you feel differently.” Sean said as he sat by the window once again, watching with servants finish the last of the decorations and lights, “She’s rather beautiful though...you could think of it as a consolation.”
“She really is beautiful,” Viggo replied thoughtfully, “She’s beautiful to look at, to admire and adore…but not to hold.” It was then that another dark-haired beauty entered his thoughts, falling from a ladder and landing in his arms, resting safely in his embrace.
Sean raised an eyebrow as a faint smile fought its way through his cousin’s usual façade. He hadn’t seen one of those since they were still children.
“Is there something you haven’t told me, cousin?” Sean asked curiously, smiling back at his cousin’s own silly grin.
“What?” Viggo said, the smile disappearing as he caught his composure again, “What makes you say that?”
“I just wanted to know, what or who finally released your smile after all these years.”
“Nobody,”
Viggo turned away from his cousin, a bit annoyed and embarrassed about smiling so openly. It was such a foreign sensation, not the smile itself really, but truly meaning it.
‘Wait a damn, fucking, second!’ Viggo fumed as anger and pride burst within him. He was happy because of a mere peasant? Impossible! Being close to a servant made him happy? Being close to that servant…that bold, insolent, shameless boy brought him happiness? No. No fucking damn way in Hell! The boy was beneath him! Whatever his memory brought back, it wasn’t happiness….it had to be something else….maybe amusement…But that would mean he was amused by the boy’s insults, and he certainly wasn’t! He was outraged and infuriated! So why did he smile then?
‘Stop acting like a stupid child!’ Viggo thought as he stopped another smile. ‘This servant, this Orlando….he means nothing!’
He was just an outspoken and insolent servant who did nothing but enrage him!
Yes...Orlando was only a servant…One who for a few strange seconds, brought genuine happiness into his life.
******* Somewhere in the Sea *********
“You miss her, don’t you lad?”
The tall figure turned from his gaze on the night sky as the old man asked him once more, “You miss her? Or perhaps, him?”
“Yes,” The young man answered, turning his back to the man, “I miss him…”
“Well, lad, you won’t have to wait much longer…just a few short hours until we reach the port of Marlott. Tell me, how long since you last saw him?”
“Ten years,” The thief replied as his dark eyes rested on the gathering storm, “On a night like this.”
“Ten years! He must really be something…ten whole years…can’t keep to myself for more than a week, can’t imagine ten years…”
The old man’s pointless drone faded into the darkness as the thief blocked out everything around him. He licked his lips, tasting the familiar scent of a looming storm fast approaching. The salty sea wind whipped his hair wildly as the ship drove through the waves, rocking the old vessel heavily as they edged closer and closer towards land.
As the first strike of lightning ripped the heavens, the thief reached for a pendant tucked carefully beneath his coat. The vagabond closed his eyes, trying to imagine how his friend looked like now. He thought about how their reunion would be, and what would happened once his friend knew…
“I promised you that we’ll meet again,” He whispered reverently as he held the pendant, all thoughts focused towards that moment when it will be made whole once more, “I promised.”
